Similar to artists who would use their portfolio to showcase pieces of art they best feel represents their skill, I want to display samples of projects I've worked on in the past or interviews I've participated in which can highlight what I can bring to your organization.
Artifact #1: Sample Teaching Module
The document above is from HIM 160: Pathophsiology, an online 5-credit class which I developed from conception to implementation. It highlights what a typical module looks like in terms of content and structure. Take note that everything is organized in a linear fashion due to restrictions in the learning management system Canvas.
The document contains a overview of what needs to be completed in the module, a listing of module objectives (these are tied to the assignments), a text-based lecture which can be supplemented with verbal feedback/announcements to the class to clarify muddy points, a matching vocabulary assignment helping reinforce the important specific concepts, a case study discussion forum assessing global concepts reviewed in the lecture(s), a concept map helping the students identify the core areas within a disease which can be used as a study guide, and a formative multiple choice quiz which assesses both the specific and global concepts.
Check out my student opinion survey results for the Spring 2013 group. These are anonymous surveys conducted at the end of term where students can safely provide feedback on the class and the instructor. I am proud that the majority of students found the class beneficial, well organized, and balanced.
Artifact #2: Sample Flowchart
This flowchart was designed to help map out the necessary steps involved when a prospective payment system (PPS) organization receives a Recovery Audit Contractor (RAC) demand letter. There are very tight deadlines and an understanding among staff and management is essential to ensure records are provided quickly and determinations investigated thoroughly.
Artifact #3: Sample Website Organization Map
This organization map was completed to map out the old Washington State Health Information Management Association (WSHIMA) website and to draft a new version based on industry norms and board feedback. This was presented to the 2013-2014 WSHIMA Board and eventually adopted.
Artifact #4: Interviews and Presentations
While not a typical portfolio piece, I have been interviewed and facilitated workshops to HIM local associations. My professional opinion has been requested outside of the classroom. The link above contains two documents including a copy of an article I was featured in with the esteemed Report on Medicare Compliance disusing medical necessity and debatable diagnoses within the RAC program and a copy of a presentation I gave to the Tacoma Area Health Information Management Association (TAHIMA) membership regarding the auditing landscape.
