Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral Communication – The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
While completing my coursework for Physical Education in the fall semester of 2015 completed a journal review. The journal highlighted what the Anterior Collateral Ligament is, causes of injury to that area of the body, and preventative measure to ensure athletes can minimize the risk of sustaining injury to that area of the body. I wanted to create this artifact to demonstrate that within Physical Education I have the foundational knowledge of reading and writing. Having this ability will also allow me to address the same needs for my students so that I can be a facilitator for their acquisition of knowledge in Physical Education.
The importance of this document is to demonstrate my ability to acquire foundational knowledge of reading and writing in P.E.. This ability will allow me to connect my students to higher level knowledge in the content area through reading, writing, and oral communication This artifact complies with the IPTS 6 and the knowledge indicator 6D that states the competent teacher, " understands writing processes and their importance to content learning." This demonstrates progress of myself meeting the standard goal by showing my ability understand writing processes and their importance when I apply it to content learning with students.
When creating this artifact, I came to realize that when completing research for a certain topic, it is important to find grade and age appropriate content that is not too much of a challenge when it come to the acquisition of new information through reading and writing. This new learning is important to my development as a teacher as it prepares me to be critical when choosing appropriate content for my students to use as reading sources for assignments. By connecting to my future classroom, this artifact allows me to have experience looking for research to use as reading materials, practice writing processes that can be shared with my students, and allows me to plan for future oral communication as well.
During my student teaching placement in the Spring of 2020, I created a lesson plan that I used with the fourth and fifth graders at Paul Revere Intermediate and Whittier School. It contains a central focus of dribbling a soccer ball administering the cues to perform it and various activities that are aligned to appropriate state standards. This artifact was produced to facilitate skill acquisition using various movement patterns by students during a Soccer unit plan.
The importance of this artifact is to be prepared ahead of time for teaching by planning effective lessons that are incorporate various aspects and concepts that require the use of various types of literacy. According to the IPTS 5 performance indicator 6N the competent teacher, " uses modeling, explanation, practice, and feedback to teach students to monitor and apply comprehension strategies independently, appropriate to the content learning." Within the lesson plan, I demonstrated an understanding of the standard by incorporating moments to model, explain processes, individual practice time on the focus skill, and positive feedback to students to engage them in the learning segment. In terms of progress toward meeting the standard, the lesson is aligned and organized in a manner where aspects of the standard are covered frequently in the lesson plan.
When preparing this artifact, I learned that there are different forms of literacy that can be utilized in the Physical Education setting. Literacy is not only vital in the general academic setting it is also needed in the physical setting in various forms as well like physical literacy and emotional literacy, This learning is important to my development as a teacher in that understand that when student have a certain level of literacy in the various forms, it allows them to remain engaged and respect the different models, explanations, practice time and feedback that can facilitate their growth. This artifact connects to my future classroom by providing me a routine and process that I can implement with future students and incorporate various aspects of literacy where I can.
