Standard 5 - Instructional Delivery – The competent teacher differentiates instruction by using a variety of strategies that support critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and continuous growth and learning. This teacher understands that the classroom is a dynamic environment requiring ongoing modification of instruction to enhance learning for each student.
During my time in the Adult Studies program, I was asked to create a flip classroom project. A flipped classroom is almost exactly how it sounds, with learning flipped from the classroom to learning at home. This artifact is in form of a Prezi presentation on how to maintain and improve bodily systems and functions and follows the Illinois common core standard for PE, which is 23.A.4a Explain how body system functions can be maintained and improved (e.g., exercise/fitness, nutrition, safety).
My flip project complies with IPTS standard five, performance indicator 5I which states that the ideal teacher, “uses multiple teaching strategies, including adjusted pacing and flexible grouping, to engage students in active learning opportunities that promote the development of critical and creative thinking, problem-solving, and performance capabilities.” This Prezi presentation is great for students because they can move through the lesson at their own pace as well as keeps the students engaged with an interactive lesson. With my lesson, students have the ability to use technology in order to meet their own individual need to gain the desired knowledge which follows the Illinois performance indicator 5N which states the ideal teacher, “uses technology to accomplish differentiated instructional objectives that enhance learning for each student”. The great part about linking an assessment with the lesson is that it allows myself as the teacher to gather student data that will help be adjust learning strategies for future classes that I teach which is in compliance with the performance indicator 5P which states the ideal teacher, “uses student data to adapt the curriculum and implement instructional strategies and materials according to the characteristics of each student.”
While completing this project, I realized that becoming a teacher is much more than being an instructor, but being a great facilitator and communicating concepts for everyone to understand is vital to becoming an effective teacher. This artifact is important to my devlopment as a teacher as I am becoming more comfortable creating interactive presentations that are engaging for students. This lesson will be a great tool to have as an instructor and this lesson will allow me to expand into many more lessons that will prove vital in the classroom.
This artifact, which complies with the IPTS 5 instructional delivery and knowledge indicator 5F, is a lesson from my soccer unit plan. This was created during my student teaching placement of Spring 2020, and it was produced as a continuation from the previous days' skill focus, however it is scaffolded and involves various strategies to facilitate the progression of the instep passing skill. This artifact was produced to maximize student engagement in a unit most kids enjoy by using a variety of strategies where everyone in the class can demonstrate their strengths in one way or another.
This artifact complies with the IPTS knowledge indicator 5F where it states a competent knows strategies to maximize student attentiveness and engagement. " Prior to the unit, i administered an interest survey to the students, and one of the favorable sports that the students liked was soccer when played in P.E. With this new information, among other common interests like working with friends and talking in groups, i was able to differentiate instruction and use a variety of strategies like a turn and talk, self-checklist, and peer assessments to maximize student engagement and attentiveness in the lesson. As the classroom is always in need of modification as the gym class period maintains a dynamic setup, using a variety of strategies allows the enhancement of each student's learning ability.
While creating this artifact, it came to me that it is important to take feedback from students to a certain degree as this information can help me as instructor develop and plan for lessons that have strategies that specifically support their specific needs. In terms of my development as a teacher, this has also taught me to not be scared to try new ideas and strategies and to not also panic if they do not go according to plan. This artifact connects to my future classroom in the idea that I can use a variety of ways in one period to keep students involved and engaged, however as dynamics very from class to class I need to be ready for each challenge when it presents itself.
