Introduction
What's Joint-Simulator?
Joint-Simulator (Joint Simulator for Satellite Sensors)
Joint-Simulator (Hashino et al. 2013) can simulate EarthCARE observations from numerical weather/climate model outputs, developed by the JAXA EarthCARE mission and the Joint-Simulator team. EarthCARE is an earth observation satellite that have been jointly developed by Japan and Europe (Illingworth et al. 2015).
The main aim of Joint-Simulator is to simulate the signals from EarthCARE’s four sensors (Illingworth et al. 2014, BAMS) , Cloud Profiling Radar (CPR) with Doppler speed sensor, Atmospheric Lidar (ATLID), Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI), and Broadband Radiometer (BBR), for purpose of validating the aerosol and cloud fields simulated by Cloud Resolving Model (CRM) and General Circulation Model (GCM).
The basic structure of Joint-Simulator is inherited from Satellite Data Simulator Unit (SDSU) (Masunaga et al. 2010, BAMS) and NASA Goddard SDSU (NASA-open source). The sensors of EarthCARE are simulated by EarthCARE Active Sensor simulator, EASE, (Okamoto et al., 2003, 2007, 2008; Nishizawa et al. 2008) for the Doppler CPR and ATLID, RSTAR 6b (Nakajima and Tanaka 1986, 1988) for MSI, and MSTRN X (Sekiguchi and Nakajima 2008) for BBR.
