Research

I am a social scientist interested in using big data and methods for causal inference to further our understanding of how to promote well-functioning democracies. I study two interrelated questions: first, can citizens in a democracy adequately hold their government accountable? And second, what needs to be done in order to ensure that governments will be responsive to their constituents’ desires? As a scholar of democratic accountability, I study various topics regarding how citizens interact with their government and, on the flip side, how the government interacts with its citizens. These topics include political participation, retrospective voting, political polarization, political representation, discrimination, and education policy. My research draws on an interdisciplinary set of theories and methodological approaches to help improve our understanding of political and social institutions and citizens’ capacities.
