Equity Team
The Equity Team is dedicated to ensuring that every student at JKO HS—with a specific focus on Black and Latino males, Multilingual Learners (ENL), and Students with Disabilities (SWD)—has access to high-level, identity-affirming instruction. The team’s work centers on moving beyond surface-level inclusion to implement systemic changes in pedagogy and classroom culture.
Key pillars of the Equity Team’s work include:
Instructional Representation: Auditing and refining curricula to ensure that instructional materials, texts, and protagonists reflect the diverse identities and lived experiences of our student body.
Participation Equity: Implementing data-driven tracking systems to monitor classroom discourse, ensuring that "airtime" and high-level questioning opportunities are distributed equitably and that no student subgroup is bypassed during fast-paced lessons.
Culturally Responsive Pedagogy: Supporting teachers in designing "low floor, high ceiling" tasks that allow students to connect academic concepts to real-world social justice themes and "counter-narratives" relevant to their own neighborhoods.
Asset-Based Scaffolding: Promoting the use of translanguaging and multimodal expressions as strengths, allowing students to demonstrate mastery of rigorous standards through their native languages and varied creative outlets.
By integrating an "Equity Lens" into the school’s intervisitation rounds and professional development, the team ensures that equity is not a standalone initiative, but a fundamental component of every instructional interaction.
