Multiscale Systems Lab (MSL, also known as the Miraculously Superb Lab) studies multiscale systems and devices in both engineering and nature. Our research centers on materials and mechanics and integrates theory, numerical simulation, experiments, and artificial intelligence.
MSL provides an international and interdisciplinary research environment where students work across mechanics, materials, advanced processing, robotics, intelligent design, and bioinspired systems. The lab currently includes 3 postdoctoral researchers, 3 Ph.D. students, 12 master’s students, and several undergraduate researchers. Since its establishment in 2011, MSL has trained, or is currently training, 72 master’s students (including international students from India and Japan, as well as co-advised students from the life sciences), 6 Ph.D. students, 7 postdoctoral researchers, 5 international visiting students, dozens of undergraduate researchers, and several high school students/summer interns.
MSL graduates pursue diverse career paths in academia, advanced industry, entrepreneurship, and further study abroad. Alumni have continued their education at leading universities including Kyoto University, MIT, UC Berkeley, the University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, and Northwestern University, in Ph.D. or MBA programs. Others have entered academia, including an Associate Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at NTU, founded startups in Silicon Valley (Pax), or joined major technology and engineering companies and research organizations such as Apple (Silicon Valley), TSMC, MediaTek, Phison, Ubiquiti, ASML, KLA-Tencor, Foxconn, ASUS, HTC, HP, Texas Instruments, Garmin, Micron, Corning, ITRI, Caterpillar Japan, and Kinki Sharyo.
