Biography

Jessica Flahaut, PhD in Planetary Sciences

I am a  french researcher in planetary sciences, with a background in geology.

I was born in Paris in 1985, but I grew up in Nancy, east of France. I have always had a passion for planets and after graduating from high school, I decided to specialize in geology.

My specialities include remote sensing, hyperspectral analysis, GIS, mineralogy, geomorphology and planetary surface processes, landing sites selection, space science, martian and lunar geology.

After preparing a Master’s in Earth Sciences, I obtained a PhD in Planetary Sciences, focused on the geologic and climatic history of planet Mars. I studied evidence of ancient rocks and water-lain sediments in the huge canyon of Valles Marineris. During my former postdocs in the OMEGA instrument team in Paris and at the VU University Amsterdam I had the opportunity to expand my work to other portions of both the martian and lunar surfaces. More recently, I organize and carried out several Mars analogue field campaigns in the Atacama desert (Chile), the Solfatara volcano (Italy) or at the Azorean fumarolic fields (Portugal). I also contribute to the selection of landing sites for future Mars and lunar missions through multiple collaborations with NASA, ESA, MBRSC and CNSA.

Since November 2016, I have a permanent position as a CNRS Researcher in France. After a year in the ChemCam/MSL team at the IRAP in Toulouse, I have relocated to another CNRS center, the CRPG Nancy, where I pursue my research on Mars, the Moon, terrestrial analogs, but also Mercury.

I am passionate about space science, which is why I attended the International Space University among many other planetary summer schools. I also participated in two student exchange programs that gave me the opportunity to study at the Swiss Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) during my Master's and at Brown University (RI) during my PhD. I love to communicate about my passion and exchange with people from different cultures or backgrounds. This is why I love to spend time doing outreach events and public lectures. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you also are also curious about the universe dark little secrets!
