Today, we had a field trip to the NOC, or the Network Operating Center. The building was across the street from our classroom in Baskin Engineering. We learned about all the things that happened behind the scenes in providing networks to a campus as big as UCSC. There were transformers, which stepped down voltage from 240V down to 120V, servers, hot and coldlanes, fiber w/ 100 Gbits, compute server, golden box, cpu vs gpu.
All data from and to UCSC would pass through either this building or its counterparts in the east section of UCSC.
