Unit rates are ratios that compare two different quantities where the denominator (second quantity) is one (i.e. 25 miles per gallon, or $15 per hour). To calculate unit rates, first look to the question to identify the quantity that is being requested. This should be the numerator (or first quantity) in the ratio. Divide the given numerator by the corresponding quantity in the problem statement to determine the unit rate.
