Khan Academy is a personalized math program designed to allow students to learn concepts completely independent of an in class teacher. Each skill is accompanied with videos that explain the concept, in addition to hints that give direct explanation of the problem being attempted.
LOGGING IN:
Students visit www.khanacademy.org and login using the username and password that has been provided for them. For most students, the username is their first and last name (some students have numbers at the end of their username, but they are aware of this and have written it down and have been sent an email with their login) and the password is their Date of birth mmddyyFL.
Ex. Christopher Jarrett with Date of Birth May, 22, 2008
Username: christopherjarrett
password: 052208CJ
ASSIGNMENTS
Once logged in, students will see upcoming assignments on the home page. To see other assignments, click [Assignments] in the center of the page, then click either [Active] or [Past] to see more assignments. Click [Next] at the bottom of each screen to see more.
Skills that have been assigned will also show up in the notifications area when students click their name in the upper right hand corner of the screen. (note: Students are allowed to work on other skills from any grade level that have been identified as potential areas for personal improvement, but only those that have been assigned will be graded).
Students can also look to the agenda for a list of past, present, and future Khan Academy assignments (I greatly encourage moving ahead of the class whenever possible). Reminders may also be posted on Edmodo in the assignment center.
WORKING THROUGH QUESTIONS
Students should neatly copy and number each attempted problem on paper, then show ALL work on paper for every question that requires ANY math. With each question, there is a link under the question that asks if they're "Stuck?". Clicking that will expose the videos that teach the skill (note: in my experience, some of the videos are not straight to the point, so feel free to do internet searches for more efficient tutorials if necessary).
There is also an option to open the "hints", which will provide step-by-step guidance and information that can be used to solve the exact problem they are doing. Students should use the hints only when needed, and those questions should still be copied and numbered among the work that is to be turned in once the assignment is completed.
JUST KEEP TRYING
Students are allowed to attempt the skills multiple times if they are not satisfied with their score.
Because learning is more important than being perfect the first time, some students choose to attempt the skill 3 or 4 times, copying and studying the hints until they are confident that they can do it without the hints. They then focus on achieving their highest score once they know they understand the skill.
If the skill is still unclear after exhausting all known options, feel free to reach out to me via Edmodo or text message at 754-800-9316.
