MATHia is the online math instruction piece at Norland Middle. The program is designed to provide students with an opportunity to progress at more of a customized pace.
Available Features
Unit Overview: Students are typically provided with a written overview at the beginning of each
unit. The overview explains the math necessary to complete the problems in each unit.
Step-by-step: Examples for most workspaces walk the students through the expected math that is to be completed in the workspace.
Hints: are made available when students need them, but they should not be relied on because the program does not give credit for problems when a hint is requested, so use them only when needed.
If the above resources do not provide adequate assistance, feel free to look up other online resources. Search the concepts on the internet (Google, YouTube, etc.). Reach out to other students that have completed the unit for assistance, and if all else fails, feel free to contact me by text or through Edmodo.
Expectations
Time: Students receive a weekly grade for time spent working on the program. Students are expected to work for at least 90 minutes per week when school time and home time are combined. A MATHia Time Log (downloadable below) is available to keep track of time spent. Please note the number of minutes will be determined by a report pulled directly from the program, and not from the student's log. It is therefore wise to consistently go beyond the 90 minutes to ensure any discrepancies in "working time" do not affect the final grade. Students also earn extra credit for extra time spent on MATHia (upwards of 90 extra credit points for a total of 180 points).
Completion: Students have a set pace that is to be followed in order to finish the program (80 workspaces) by our target date of April 2nd, 2018. Every student should have a printed copy of the MATHia Grade 6 Completion Targets (downloadable below) also known as the "MATHia Log". It includes each workspace, unit, and module that is to be completed, as well as the date they are expected to be completed by in the left most column for comparison to the student's pace. Logs are to be filled out AFTER each completed workspace and signed by a parent/guardian. Students are rewarded for each completed workspace, unit, module, and parent signature, so it's important to keep up with the log.
Students receive weekly grades for their completion of the program. The grade schedule for each week is available in the Carnegie Learning Grade 6 Benchmark file (downloadable below) so students are in complete control of their grade based on how much they complete. Note that students can receive substantial extra credit for working beyond the target, so students should always keep working.
