JAER Guidelines for Submission for Papers Written in English (31 May 2018)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Eligibility]

Submissions will be accepted in principle only from current members of the Japan Association of English Romanticism (hereafter, JAER). Authors are restricted to publication in no more than two consecutive issues by general consent.

[Contents]

Submissions, including academic essays, book reviews, and other essays by JAER members, must be about English romantics or romanticism. Papers must be unpublished at the time of publication of the issue to which they are submitted for review, though papers that have been presented orally can be submitted provided that the fact is made clear. Authors whose first language is not English must have their papers, including their synopses, checked for spelling or grammatical errors by native speakers of English with suitable qualifications or status.

[Review]

Papers will be reviewed by the editorial board of JAER, and contributors will be notified of the results by the end of August for book reviews, by early December for academic essays, and by mid-December for other essays by JAER members.

[Proofreading]

The first proof is corrected by contributors themselves. Proofreading is restricted to the correction of misprints, and other changes are not permitted as a matter of principle. If there are exceedingly numerous corrections or the proof is not returned to the editorial board by the appointed date, the board reserves the right to postpone the publication of the paper to the next issue, after an additional review if necessary.

[Off-prints]

Contributors of academic essays will receive 5 copies of the JAER journal and a PDF file of their essays, instead of off-prints. Requests for additional copies of the journal are not accepted in principle.

[Agreements]

(1) By publishing your work in JAER journals, you implicitly agree to the publication of your paper in digital format.

(2) In principle, JAER holds the copyrights of all the papers and articles which appear in JAER journals, conference programs, or other related documents.

(3) The authors of papers and articles published in JAER journals, however, are permitted to quote all or parts of their writings for non-commercial purposes such as research, education or dissemination of their ideas, if they clearly cite their JAER publication.

JAER Guidelines for Writing Papers in English (1 February 2024)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please note that you must anonymously submit your papers.

Please note that the deadline for submission of academic essays is now fixed on 25 October.

[General Matters]

(1) In principle, papers should be completed in WORD format (.doc or .docx files). The editorial board of JAER accepts no responsibility for any kind of textual changes like character corruption, so you are strongly recommended to send PDF files in addition to WORD files. Times New Roman or Century fonts should be used in preparing documents.

(2) Do not include any information that could lead to the identification of the author. If your paper is accepted, add your name and your status as of press time to the final draft. You may refer to acknowledgements, any relevant oral presentation before writing the paper, and your research grant for the study, etc., at the final stage of editing.

(3) Specify the number of words of your paper and the style sheet (including the title and edition) you have used in compiling the paper. These should be mentioned at the end of your submitted paper, but must be deleted from its final draft.

(4) If you need to refer to your past achievements in your paper, refrain from saying that they are your achievements. If you need to mention that they are your achievements, make revisions to the final draft.

(5) A cover letter stating the title of your paper, your name, a brief personal record, your contact information (including postal address, phone number and e-mail address), your status as of press time, acknowledgements, any relevant oral presentation before writing the paper, and your research grant for the study, etc., must be attached to your paper.

[Paper Length]

(1) Book reviews: 2,000 words or less.

(2) Academic essays: 6,000 words or less.

(3) Other essays by JAER members: 750 words or less (limited to 2 pages if illustrated).

(4) Others: Please ask the editorial board for details.

(5) Synopses, notes, works cited, references and bibliographies are all included in the word counts above.

(6) Increased paper length, due to inserted graphs, figures, pictures, etc., can be permitted up to 2 pages. Contributors are liable to pay any charges for additional pages beyond the permitted length. Ask the editorial board for details if you have any questions.

[Guidelines for Writing Papers]

(1) If you use block quotations, indent 3 character spaces for each line and add a blank line at the beginning and end of the quotations.

(2) If your paper is chosen for publication, you must disable the automatic note-numbering function of WORD and type in the note numbers yourself. The notes must be placed at the end of your paper.

(3) Follow the guidelines of the latest edition of MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. If you have justifiable reasons, the latest edition of the MHRA Style Guide may be used. When using the MLA format, the British style of spelling and punctuation is acceptable.

(4) A synopsis of about 350 words must be attached to the beginning of an academic essay.

(5) If you reproduce research materials which require you to obtain permission from their copyright holders, you are requested to submit to the editorial board the photocopies of related documents including written permission no later than the time when you receive the first proof.

[Deadlines]

The deadline for book reviews is the last Saturday of June of each year. The deadline for academic essays is 25 October each year. The deadline for other essays by JAER members is the last Saturday of November of each year. The replacement of files is not permitted after the deadline.
