Mummy
MAY GOD BLESS US ALL
Jacob, my First-born (28-10-’72) came into this world on the eve of Deepavali, the Festival of Lights, very much indicative of his luminous life later. Though for a short time, he lived a full life combining duties & pleasures. The saying, ‘How long one lives is not the criterion but how well one does’ is very true in his case.
A precocious child he completed his X std. at the age of 14+ with cent per cent marks in Mathematics & 98% in Science. It was a hard decision for a mother like me to send him at 16+ to BITS, Pilani, so far away from Madras. The day of his departure 23rd July ’89 is still vivid before me. The whole week after family prayer at night I used to make tearful supplications to God Almighty regarding his stay & safety at Pilani. Finally, my son forbade me to come to the railway station to see him off. Reason? If I wept, he would, too, and he never liked the idea of shedding tears in front of his friends. But God had planned it a different way. There he was surrounded by many of his enthusiastic friends who garlanded him & gave him such a grand farewell with clapping & shouting that I, with eyes filled with tears of happiness and a beaming smile waved to him.
With the just pride of a mother, I can say Jacob was a gem of a person in every way. His love & RESPECT for his parents; affection & CARE for his younger sister & brother and his THOUGHTFUL words & actions towards his other relatives and also to the poor and the needy are his plus points that can be followed by the modern youngsters. When he was about 9 years old, he gave away Rs. 30 /- (his eager collection of new one rupee coins) for refugee problem without consulting anybody at home. I was very happy to see his feelings for the suffering humanity.
Above all, he gave a very special place for FRIENDSHIP in his life. As if to prove that fact God ended his life along with one of his dear friends, Manoj Krishnan on 19-06-’98 in Dubai where both were working.
The creation of this website by Gopal Rangachary, another of his closest friends and the contributions to it by his other friends are indicative of the kind of friendship he valued very much in his life. Heartfelt thanks to everyone of them.
When many of his friends and colleagues praise him, my heart swells with pride and gratitude. The great Tamil poet, Thiruvalluvar’s couplet,
“Great is the joy of the mother when a son is born unto her;
But greater far is her delight when she heareth him called worthy.”
explains my state now. To grieve too much over the death of such a praiseworthy person will be like questioning God’s Wisdom. So Prayers and Gandhiji’s words, “There is a Divine cause behind every physical calamity” are a comfort to me today.
My son, you were a GEM
Today, you are a STAR.
