ZEKR

***Constantly Remembering (Zekr) of ALLAH in yourselves

along with ***thinking/reflecting/pondering about Allah

and his works ***, which is the main method to connect to Allah

like the prophets did and Satan does not want us to achieve:  

-الَّذِينَ يَذْكُرُونَ اللَّهَ قِيَامًا وَقُعُودًا وَعَلَىٰ جُنُوبِهِمْ وَيَتَفَكَّرُونَ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ رَبَّنَا مَا خَلَقْتَ هَٰذَا بَاطِلًا سُبْحَانَكَ فَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

Those who remember God while standing, and sitting, and on their sides; and they ponder upon the creation of the heavens and the earth: “Our Lord, You did not create this in vain, glory to You, so protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (3: 191)

 لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِي رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرْجُو اللَّهَ وَالْيَوْمَ الْآخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثِيرًا-

You have an excellent example in the Messenger of God;for anyone who seeks God and the Last Day, and remembers ALLAH frequently. (33: 21) 

 اتْلُ مَا أُوحِيَ إِلَيْكَ مِنَ الْكِتَابِ وَأَقِمِ الصَّلَاةَ إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ تَنْهَىٰ عَنِ الْفَحْشَاءِ وَالْمُنكَرِ وَلَذِكْرُ اللَّهِ أَكْبَرُ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مَا تَصْنَعُونَ-

Recite what is revealed to you of the Scripture, and perform the prayer. The prayer prevents indecencies and evils. And the remembrance of Allah is Greater. And God knows what you do. (29: 45)

     يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اذْكُرُوا اللَّهَ ذِكْرًا كَثِيرًا-

O you who believe, remember ALLAH with frequent remembrance. (33: 41)

   وَاذْكُر رَّبَّكَ فِي نَفْسِكَ تَضَرُّعًا وَخِيفَةً وَدُونَ الْجَهْرِ مِنَ الْقَوْلِ بِالْغُدُوِّ وَالْآصَالِ وَلَا تَكُن مِّنَ الْغَافِلِينَ 

And remember your Lord ***within yourself***, humbly and fearfully, and quietly, in the morning and the evening, and ***do not be of the neglectful***(7: 205)

رِجَالٌ لَّا تُلْهِيهِمْ تِجَارَةٌ وَلَا بَيْعٌ عَن ذِكْرِ اللَّهِ وَإِقَامِ الصَّلَاةِ وَإِيتَاءِ الزَّكَاةِ يَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا تَتَقَلَّبُ فِيهِ الْقُلُوبُ وَالْأَبْصَارُ

By men who neither trading nor commerce distracts them from God’s remembrance, and from performing the prayers, and from giving alms. They fear a Day when minds and sights are overturned. (24: 37)

   اسْتَحْوَذَ عَلَيْهِمُ الشَّيْطَانُ فَأَنسَاهُمْ ذِكْرَ اللَّهِ أُولَٰئِكَ حِزْبُ الشَّيْطَانِ أَلَا إِنَّ حِزْبَ الشَّيْطَانِ هُمُ الْخَاسِرُونَ

Satan has taken hold of them, and so has caused them to forget the remembrance of ALLAH.These are the partisans of Satan. Indeed, it is Satan’s partisans who are the losers. (58: 19)

Zekr is an obligatory act within ourselves as it is even Higher than Salat as per the Quran Ayas indicated above. Many are not aware of Zekr as being the word ALLAH only, and just consider Salat. However Allah out of his immence mercy, will not hold accountacle those who are unaware of the Zekr of Allah as he holds us accountable for Salat. If Allah had based our deeds on Zekr rather than Salat, most of us propbably would not be in a position to be even worthy of heaven.

There are no restrictions on the physical circumstance,frequency,location, or timing of Zekr. The restrictions on modality pertain to certain specific obligatory acts such as Salat. 

Hadiths on Zekr:

***The Prophet said: "The People of Paradise will not regret except one thing alone: the hour that passed them by and in which they made no remembrance of Allah." 

***The Prophet once asked his companions: "Shall I tell you about the best of all deeds, the best act of piety in the eyes of your Lord, which will elevate your status in the Hereafter, and carries more virtue than the spending of gold and silver in the service of Allah or taking part in jihad and slaying or being slain in the path of Allah? The Zekr of ALLAH."  

***The Prophet used to say: "Everything has a polish, and the polish of minds is Zekr of ALLAH. Nothing is more calculated to rescue from Allah's punishment than Zekr of Allah." He was asked whether this did not apply also to jihad in Allah's path, and he replied: "Not even if one should ply his sword until it breaks." 

*** The Prophet was asked, "Which of the servants of Allah is best in rank before Allah on the Day of resurrection?" He said: "The ones who remember him much." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what about the fighter in the way of Allah?" He answered: "Even if he strikes the unbelievers and mushrikin with his sword until it broke, and becomes red with their blood, truly those who do Zekr are better than him in rank." 

*** The walis of Allah remained silent, hence their silence was [an indication of] their remembrance of Allah. They cast a look, hence what they saw was a source of admonishment for them. They spoke, hence their speech was wisdom. And they walked, hence their walking among the people was a blessing (to those people). Had it not been for the life-terms pre-assigned for them, their souls would not have settled in their bodies out of their fear of the torment and out of eagerness for the rewards.’ (Al-Kafi, Vol. 2, p. 186).

***  Imam Ja’far  as-Sadiq (as) narrates from his father, Imam Muhammad b. ‘Ali al-Baqir (as)  was one who performed much Zekr of Allah (SwT) and that anytime he walked with him, he would be in the Zekr of Allah ; when he ate, he would remember Allah ; even when he was speaking to people, he would not be negligent of the Zekr of Allah 

*** In Usul al-Kafi, Imam Ja’faras-Sadiq (as) has said:

مَا مِنْ شَيْءٍِ إِلاَّ وَلَهُ حَدٌّ يُنْتَهى إِلَيْهِ، إِلاَّ الذِّكْرُ، فَلَيْسَ لَهُ حَدٌّ يُنْتَهى إِلَيْهِ

“There is not a single thing (in the faith of Islam) except that there is a limit set for it so then when that limit is met, then that act is complete except for the Zekr (of Allah) since for this there is no limit and no end to it.”

*** Imam Jafar Sadiq says:

"God says: If a person instead of invoking Me (Dua), is engaged in Remembering me (Zekr), I will give him the best thing I give to a supplicant."
