The National Heritage Language Resource Center, at the University of California, Los Angeles, is one of
15 Language Resource Centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. NHLRC's mission is to
develop effective pedagogical approaches to teaching heritage language learners, both by creating a
research base and by pursuing curriculum design, materials development, and teacher education.
Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages www.cal.org/heritage
The Alliance for the Advancement of Heritage Languages is committed to advancing language
development for heritage language speakers in the United States as part of a larger effort to educate
members of society who can function professionally in English and in other languages. The work of the
Alliance is carried out through publications, the ongoing development of its Web site, a newsletter, and a
listserv.

The Heritage Language Journal (HLJ), an online, blind-refereed journal, was established in 2002 to
provide a forum for scholars to publish the results of their research and to advance knowledge about
educating heritage speakers. HLJ is published by the National Heritage Language Resource Center at
UCLA and is housed on a server hosted by the UCLA International Institute.
