I, Soke James Neiman, hereby certify that, via a signed document including all senior yudansha in our art,
the official nominal designation of the martial art originally named as Shugyo Aikido (修行 合気道) is now
renamed as Shugyo Aikijujutsu (修行 合気柔術).
This renaming reflects the consensus of the practicing yudansha and caretakers of the art,
whose names and signatures are below. The reasoning for the renaming is to reflect the current
historical context in which the names Aikido and Aikijujutsu are commonly understood in the
21st century. The art was originally named as Shugyo Aikido in the spirit of the early, undiluted
Aikido tradition established by Morihei Ueshiba, in which the practitioners combined extensive
prior experience in striking arts with techniques derived from an older form of Aikijujutsu. In
the years that passed, this historical context has largely disappeared, thereby creating
misunderstandings of the roots and philosophy associated with the name of Shugyo Aikido. This
renaming of Shugyo Aikido to Shugyo Aikijujutsu more accurately reflects the true nature of the
art we practice, and will serve to eliminate any further confusion within the 21st century global
martial arts community.
