The NanoFemtoLab (NFL) was established by Professor Federico Rosei starting in May 2002 at Institut National de la Recherche Scientifique (INRS), which is the Graduate School of the Université du Québec network. INRS is located in Varennes near Montreal (Canada). The NFL puts together cutting edge expertise drawn from the widely separated fields of chemistry, materials processing, surface science and device physics. NFL’s competences in Materials Science, Engineering of Surfaces and Interfaces, Device Engineering, Chemical Synthesis and the infrastructure available in the lab as well as in neighbouring institutions in the Montreal area cover all the needs to realize the project. The core activities at NFL focus on the growth, processing and characterization of nanostructured materials. Scanning probe microscopy (both in ambient conditions and in a controlled ultra high vacuum atmosphere) and time-resolved spectroscopic techniques represent the cutting-edge applications to which NFL activities are addressed. In the period 2004-2012 NFL attracted funding for about 5 M€.
