Welcome...
... to Leuven
Leuven is the capital of the province of Flemish Brabant in the Flemish Region and located about 25 kilometres east of Brussels. It is home to Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world's largest brewing group and one of the five largest consumer-goods companies in the world; and to the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, the largest and oldest university of the Low Countries and the oldest Catholic university still in existence.
The earliest mention of Leuven ("Loven") is from 891, when a Viking army was defeated by the Frankish king Arnulf of Carinthia. According to a legend it 's red-white-red colours depict the blood-stained shores of the river Dijle after this battle. Situated beside this river Leuven became between the 11th and 14th century the most important centre of trade in the duchy. A token of its former importance as a centre of cloth manufacture is shown in that ordinary linen cloth is known in late-14th-century and 15th-century texts as lewyn (other spellings: Leuwyn, Levyne, Lewan(e), Lovanium, Louvain). In the 1425 a new golden era began with the founding of what is now the largest and oldest university in the BeNeLux, the Catholic University of Leuven.
As of 2010, Leuven has more than 100,000 inhabitants while the administrative region around Leuven counts almost 500,000. With 35,000 students Leuven is a real "student city" and during the academic year most citizens in the centre of the city are students.
The combination of numerous students and a rich tradition in brewing beer makes Leuven one of the liveliest bar scenes in Belgium. Because the Old Market square counts dozens of bars, cafés and discotheques, Leuven is said to be “the longest bar" in Europe.
