Convex Lens

TESTING INVESTIGATION: CONVEX LENS

GIVEN: Optics bench, convex lens, light source and screen

TASK: Determine the focal length of a converging lens.

Explain how you can make the determination by using a graph not just an equation.

POSTER: Two graphs clearly indicating how the focal length is determined:

1. Graph of image distance versus object distance

2. Graph of linearized data

EXTENSION ACTIVITY 1:

Image formation with two convex lenses.

EXTENSION ACTIVITY 2:

Determine the focal length of a diverging lens.

AP PHYSICS 2

Essential Knowledge 6.E.5: The refraction of light as it travels from one transparent medium to another can be used to form images.

  • LO 6.E.5.2: The student is able to plan data collection strategies, perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence, and refine scientific questions about the formation of images due to refraction for thin lenses. [SP 3.2, 4.1, 5.1, 5.2, 5.3]
