Sanoj Bro, Congrats We are proud of you : Our 77th student.

Hon.Mayor V.K Prsanth gifting modified cycle to sanoj

Sanoj P.R., a PhD student in Hindi at the University of Calicut, got in touch with Prakash Gopinath of the Indus Cycling Embassy over phone two weeks ago and expressed his desire to learn cycling.

Ten years ago, Sanoj’s left arm was amputated after he was diagnosed with bone cancer. Without the use of an arm, he was apprehensive if he would be able to ride a bicycle, but Prakash assured him it might take longer than usual but was definitely possible. He also asked Sanoj to come down to the city for a few days. Last Wednesday, Sanoj arrived at Prakash’s house and as Prakash had predicted, he took only four days to learn to ride. For the past few days, he has been cycling the city roads to get more practice.

While Sanoj had learnt to ride a bicycle, he did wonder what he would do after going back to Kozhikode since he did not own a bicycle nor did he have the means to buy one.

Top rank-holder in MA and topper again in the PhD entrance examination of the University of Calicut, Sanoj has no close family to speak of but for a grandmother. His research guide has found him accommodation and helps him financially too.

Unknown to Sanoj, the Indus Cycling Embassy, which has been gifting cycles to students in the district, decided to collect funds from friends and well-wishers to buy him a bicycle.

They managed to raise ₹22,300, of which ₹6,800 was spent on the cycle, modifications, and the helmet, with the cycle store throwing in a good discount. A cheque for the remaining amount was made out in his name.

Mayor V.K. Prasanth handed over the bicycle to Sanoj on the Corporation premises on Thursday while Deputy Mayor Rakhi Ravikumar handed over the cheque to him. Says Sanoj, “It was a surprise. Prakash casually mentioned meeting the Mayor, but only when I reached there did I get to know about the bicycle.”

Trial and error

The bicycle, Prakash says, has been modified to suit Sanoj’s requirements. Its front brake, back brake, and gear are in the right handle. This necessitated a lot of trial and error so that Sanoj could use them comfortably.

Sanoj says he had been practising without using his artificial limb, but when he tried riding with the limb on, he started feeling its weight. The next few days will be spent in getting accustomed to the limb while riding.

The 25-year-old student says that after returning to Kozhikode by train on Monday, he plans to ride his bicycle from where he lives to the university department.

Hon.Deputy Mayor gifting the cheque cash collected by iceans to sanoj

Thiruvananthapuram: It was a moment of joy for Sanoj PR as his long-cherished dream to own a cycle was fulfilled on Thursday. Though he found it difficult to find a balance with his artificial hand, he was all smiles as he peddled through the corporation office compound on his brand-new cycle. The cycle was presented by mayor V K Prasanth at corporation office in the presence of deputy mayor Rakhi Ravikumar.

A native of Thrissur, Sanoj‘s left hand was amputated after he was diagnosed with bone cancer in 2009. His wish to ride a cycle remained a dream until last week when he joined training to ride a cycle at Indus Cycling Embassy. He learnt cycling in four days.

“My friend from Thiruvananthapuram had told me about ICE, where I can learn cycling. And when I came to the city for check-up at RCC on April 18, I visited Prakash from ICE and he offered to train me. First it was hard to balance as my hand and legs were hurting. Only on the fourth day I could properly balance with my hand and gained confidence to cycle. I was informed that we are going to see the mayor and the cycle came as a surprise,” he said.

“I have been cycling without the artificial limb, which weighs around 5kg. I have to practice with the artificial limb to get my balance and peddle correctly. I will use my cycle to commute between my hostel and the campus. I think it should take 15 minutes. I’m yet to decide on transporting the cycle to Kozhikode. I hope to ride a scooter and drive a car someday,” added Sanoj.

ICE members contributed an amount to purchase a special cycle for Sanoj. The gear, front and back brakes were fixed on the righthand-side handle of the cycle.

“He told us that he doesn’t have a cycle when he came to learn cycling, so we fulfilled his wish. It took time to fix the gears on the righthand-side handle so that he can ride comfortably,” said Prakash P Gopinath, managing trustee of Indus Cycling Embassy.

Sanoj, who is pursuing PhD in Hindi, received the first rank in Hindi from Calicut University in 2017.

1 Book 1 Pencil for flood affected students in Idukki

INDUS CYCLING EMBASSY thanks each and every one who helped us in this project

TIRUVANANTHAPURAM : In the deep reaches of Idukki, in a few tribal colonies, the floods had annihilated almost everything. For the many students living in the colonies, going to school posed a huge challenge, with their notebooks being washed along with the floods. But, Saturday was a day that brought smiles to the faces of the many children in these colonies.

All packed neatly in school bags, they received notebooks and other school supplies, as a group of Good Samaritans from the city gifted them all the required school merchandise.

More than 200 children in the flood-hit areas of Idukki were given school kits by city-based cycling club Indus Cycling Embassy. The study kits were distributed to the students at locations such as ‘56th mile’, Perunkala, and Government GHSS, Kuttoor.

Replete with every school merchandise such as notebooks, pencil, pen, and so forth, the school kits comprised instrument boxes for students studying in classes ranging from 5th to 10th while crayons and other colouring materials were given along with the kits for students up to the fourth standard.

“Earlier we had thought about focussing on Idukki and Wayanad. It was when my friend Sajini informed that there were Dalit colonies where help hadn’t reached up till now that we decided to focus on those areas,” Prakash P Gopinath, managing trustee, Indus Cycling Embassy. “Study materials to the tune of I.5 lakhs were distributed,” he adds.

“It all started when we noticed that no article for school kids was brought forth during the collection drives in the city. So we thought of starting the campaign,” he says. And thus the ‘1 Book 1Pencil’ campaign kicked off on August 12th. The campaign started by the club focused on sourcing school supplies. The members of the Green Army in the city schools spread the word about collecting notebooks.

Each student was asked to donate one notebook and one pencil. The members of Indus Cycling Embassy and their friends pooled in money and donated school supplies.

Collection drive conducted

The collection continued at the organisation’s office till September 7th. The students from schools such as NSS HSS, Palkulangara; Government GHSS, Perrorkada; Model School; Trinity College of Engineering, students of an IAS academy in Pattom, also joined the drive.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is back to square one, like the start of a new academic year. With the notebooks and other school supplies washed away by the cataclysmic floods, countless students have to start from the scratch. The schools are set to reopen in one week’s time. With the shops and every other outlet being washed away, school students are at a loss on how to tide over this academic year.

The ‘1 Book 1 Pencil’ campaign attempts to address just that. “Everything has been washed away. What will they take to the classes when the schools reopen. Even the shops are gone, so they wouldn’t be able to buy the school supplies,” says Prakash P Gopinath, managing trustee of the city-based cycling club Indus Cycling Embassy.

The campaign started by the club attempts to source school supplies which will then be distributed to students attached to schools in the flood-affected area.

The focus is presently on the students of classes 10, 11 and 12. “They are the ones who have to face public exams and hence our primary focus is on them. We are currently identifying the schools that were severely hit by the floods,” says Prakash.

It all started when a dearth of notebooks was seen at the collection centres in the city. “When we started collecting relief materials, we never came across any notebooks. At that time, our priority might have been different but this is highly significant and needs to be addressed,” he adds. And that was how the campaign started in mid-August.

The members of the Green Army in the city schools spread the word about collecting notebooks. “Each student was asked to donate one notebook and one pencil. The response was immense,” he adds. The students from schools such as NSS HSS, Palkulangara, Trinity College of Engineering, and an IAS academy in Pattom, among others, joined in the efforts to raise schools supplies. Soon the campaign caught on and school supplies worth more than Rs 40,000 could be sourced. “Many of our friends have helped by pitching in with monetary help. But we only take school supplies from the public,” says Prakash.

School kits are being readied at the office of the cycling club in Vazhuthacaud. Replete with notebooks, instrument box, pencil, pen, a sketch pen set and all other study materials, the school kits will be ferried to the students once they return home.
