An interactive session on Esperanto with Dr A. Giridhar Rao
Saluton! This session (to be held on 08/12/2018) is an introduction to the planned language Esperanto, and the Esperanto movement and culture. After a brief overview of how Esperanto works, we will look at some sociolinguistic and literary aspects of the worldwide Esperanto community.
Some of the themes that will be touched upon in the talk, and the discussion thereafter, are the following:
What features at each linguistic level must an effective international language have?
What constitutes an easy language?
What is a fair language system for a multilingual context?
What forms might a highly culture-specific idea like politeness take in an international language?
For those interested specifically in language pedagogy, themes might include:
How does the learner’s own language repertoire affect Esperanto learning?
Does Esperanto-learning follow the same path and pace as learning any other language?
Do some language backgrounds confer an advantage, and conversely others a disadvantage, in learning Esperanto?
Does Esperanto-learning facilitate the learning of other languages any more than the learning of any language makes it easier to learn a subsequent language?
Mi esperas vidi vin en la sesio!
