Background
Ioanna G. Chouvarda received the Diploma in Electrical & Computer Engineering (1993) and the Ph.D. (2002) in Medical Informatics all from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (A.U.Th.), Greece.
Her Ph.D. thesis was primarily focused on analysis of cardiac signals by means of time-frequency methods, entitled: "Cardiac System Time-Frequency Analysis in microscopic and macroscopic level".
Current Academic status
In 2011 she was appointed as Lecturer and in 2015 as Assistant Professor at the Lab of Computing, Medical Informatics and Biomedical Imaging technologies in the School of Medicine, A.U.Th., having R&D and educational duties. She got tenure track in 2019. She was elected as Associate Professor in "Medical Informatics and Biomedical Data Analysis" in October 2020 , and was appointed in March 2021 .
Educational Tasks
She is lecturing in the M.Sc. Program in Medical Informatics of A.U.Th. , M.Sc Program in Medicine, and the undergraduate Medical Informatics course of the Medical School, having a long experience in the coordination of the Medical Informatics Postgraduate Studies.
Mobility
She has been a visiting Lecturer in the Medical School, A.U.Th. for the academic year 2007-08, and at the Department of Informatics of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, for 2005-6.
She has been visiting researcher at Politecnico di Milano, Nov 2009-April 2010.
She has been visiting researcher at VTT, Tampere, Oct-Dec 2019.
Research projects
Up to date, she has contributed to numerous R&D projects in the ICT for Health and e-health area ( EU and nationally funded), , and has lead some of them.
These include the projects CVDLINK, EUCAIM, INCISIVE, CHAMELEONS, Milord, CHESS, AEGLE, PATHWAY, ACT@SCALE, ACT, PINCLOUD, ITECH, WELCOME, SENSATION, HeartCycle , PSIP , CHS, PANACEIA, implemented at AUTH and CERTH.
Scientific Interests
She leads the BiOasys group within the lab , for Biomedical Data Analysis and Artificial Intelligence in Connected Health Technologies and Systems Medicine.
BiOasys main interests include:
the development of biomedical data analytic methods & integrated data-driven approaches
the exploration of machine learning and AI for health-related predictive models and precision medicine
the incorporation of AI in connected health technologies & systems medicine
the interplay of systems medicine with the daily life data & connected health technologies
The R&D is performed in close cooperation with medical clinics and research institutes.
Technical Activities
Dr. Ioanna Chouvarda is Senior Member of the IEEE (EMBS and WIE) and member of the Technical Chamber of Greece. She has been associate editor in CMPB, and later member of the editorial board.
In 2020 she has been elected as IEEE WIE Greece vice-chair and she also serves as IEEE EMBS Greece secretary.
