Of course, there are a HUGE number of drugs and medicines that can be taken to control IBD. We don't advocate any one of them, this is something that you need to talk to your doctor about.
Immune System Modulators - While discussing this topic at the meeting, the topic of "Immune System Modulators" always comes up as this is one of the most common drugs that is taken to control IBD (the other is the 5-ASA group). On combination of drugs that is not common is a new drug combination that is given out - Allipurinol and 6 MP. This combination boosts the 6TG levels (the therapeutic agent) and kills the 6 MMP (the toxic agent). So this is something you could talk to your doctor about if you are struggling to find the right drugs that work. A doctor at UC Davis, Dr. Prindiville, was one of the first to try this, so if you doctor questions you, you can drop his name, he is well known throughout the area. He was the keynote speaker at one of the CCFA symposiums.
Preventing Diarrhea - Bile Salts - At a recent meeting, a member told us about some meds that absorb bile salts which can cause diarrhea. She swears by them, she has normal BM’s!!! Something we all strive for. J We have such simple goals in life. We don’t want to scale Mt. Everest or win a Nobel Prize or anything like that. We just want normal BM’s and no pain. J This medication is for anyone who's small intestine does not absorb enough bile salts, whether because of recesection, imflammation, etc. If the bile salts are not absorbed it can cause diarrhea. The powder (or sand like substance) that you mix with 4-6oz of liquid is Cholestyram (generic for Questran). The pills are Colestipol (generic for Colestid).
