Dial-up and Broadband Internet in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, we can have Dial-up and Broadband from different ISPs. Generally, they provide ADSL connection or HSPA connections. However, there’s also ISDN, Satellite, Cellular and Power-line internet connections too.

Dialog Telecom (MTT Network Pvt Ltd)

Dialog Telecom provides HSPDA (High Speak Packet Data Access). Dialog also provides WiMAX, WI-Fi Hot-Spots, Cable internet. It started providing dial-up connections but now it seems they are not with it! Dialog Internet provides internet filtering (known as Dialog X-IT) for their customers’ safety.

Dialog Mobile Broadband with HSPDA

Dialog HSPDA gives 512Kbps/1Mbps download speeds and 128Kbps/265Kbps upload speeds. IP Address is dynamic. Service activation cost 3000/- and monthly rentals are 1750/- for 512Kbps (HomeNet package) and 3000/- for 1Mbps (HomeNET+ package).

Dialog Wireless Broadband with WiMAX (Dialog SmartHome)

This is fixed broadband and voice combined solution for who need fast, reliable broadband and voice with low tariff rates. This WiMAX connection comes in 2 speed varieties. SmartHome 512Kbps download speed and 128Kbps upload speed package, SmartHome+ 1Mbps download speed and 256Kbps upload speed. IP Address is dynamic. SmartHome pacgage available for 2000/- or 2250/- monthly rentals and SmartHome+ comes in 3250/- and 3500/- monthly rentals. Dialog 3G internet access provides 2Mbps to 3.6Mbps speeds.

Dialog services are wide spread and have a reliable and cost effective. Dialog is the first choice if someone wants wireless access to the Internet.

Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel Broadband (M3)

Mobitel HSPDA speeds up to 3.6Mbps on Download link and 1.98Mpbs on Uplink. They provide 3 post paid packages; M3 Zoom490, M3 Zoom890 and M3 Zoom2490. Each package gives 750Mb, 2 GB and 7 GB free data bundle respectively. Monthly rates are 490/-, 890/- and 2490/- respectively. Subscriber want a 1500/- of deposit and connection fee is 500/-.

In Mobitel 3G Internet access, with delight 25 package, you get 50 MB of data to be used within the day you wish to subscribe. Fee - Rs.25/-. With Delight 50 package, you get 100 MB of data, 100 minutes of M2M video calls and 100 M2M SMSs to be used within the day you wish to subscribe. Fee - Rs.50/-. Download link and Upload link speed up to 1Mbps

Mobitel Dial-up Internet

Mobitel dial-up charge will be 0.27/- per minute. Minimum 50/- must be added to your cost. You can connect with and Mobitel Dial-up with any SLT Dial-up access number or WiFi access. Your pre-paid card may valid as follows; Rs. 50 - 200 - 90 days | Rs. 201 - 500 - 180 days | Rs. 501 - 1000 - 365 days.

SLTnet – Sri Lanka Telecom Dial-up

SLTnet provides wide range of Internet dial up packages. You can access this STLnet Dial-up through PSTN as well as high-speed dial-up access through ISDN. SLTnet Dialup provides 9 different dial-up packages.

There are Entrée, Home, Xcite, Office, Office 1IP, Xcel and Xcel 1IP packages to choose from. Entrée and Home packages are 512Kbps down/128Kbps upload speed packages. Xcite is 1Mbps down/256Kbps upload speed. Office packages are 2Mbps down/512Kbps upload speeds. Other packages are 4Mbps down and 512Kbps upload speeds.

SLTnet Wireless Internet (Wi-Fi)

Access rate for Wi-Fi - 1hr - Rs.200.00

SLTnet Leased Line

Leased line connections are available in 64Kbps/128Kbps/192 Kbps /256 Kbps /384 Kbps /512 Kbps /1Mbps and 2Mbps bandwidths. Cost might be from 20000/- to 580000/-

Lanka Communication Services (LankaCom)

Broadband Internet access either via the WIN - Wireless IP Network, LMDS, OFDM networks leased line. LankaCom provides Internet access at up to DS-3 (45Mbps). LankaCom is also the operator of the Sri Lanka Internet Exchange. (SL-IX)

Post Paid Dial Up charges will be based on selected tariff. 1 Free e-mail account with 5 MB server space. Additional accounts are charged a onetime fee of Rs. 500/-. Unlimited surfing and no monthly rentals. Data Kit free of charge.

According to these, Dialog and SLT provide more reliable and cost effective bandwidths. SLT and Dialog also provide many package variations to choose from. Mobitel encouraging their mobile broadband connections and good for Dial-up too! LankaBell rates are quite high. So, I prefer Dialog or SLT because according to acquired details and my personal experiences. SLT might beneficial for island wide but not much as Dialog in western province.
