How Broadband works?
When you connect to the Internet via a broadband Internet connection, your PC is connected to the ISP through a cable, DSL or wireless connection, it remains connected (Always On) until the cable box or DSL line is disconnected or physically unplugged. A DSL connection runs through unused wires in your existing phone line without disruption and can translate data at 5 million bytes per second, or 5Mbps. Broadband services are often referred to as "always on" services because it is not necessary to make a setup call to your ISP each time you wish to access the Internet; this means that once you are assigned an IP address, you keep it until you request it to be changed.
ADSL Technologies are, DSL (ADSL/SDSL), Multilinking Modems, ISDN, T-1/DS-1, Wired Ethernet, Rural broadband, Satellite Internet, Cellular broadband, Power-line Internet, Wireless ISP, iBlast and WorldSpace.
Advantages of Broadband
1. Faster connection speed & high Speed downloads. It is fast download speeds and the availability of huge streams of bandwidth. The speed depends on the amount of congestion on the line and distance from a base station.
2. Telephone lone is not necessary. Cellular Broadband, Satellite Broadband, Wireless Broadband (WiMAX) and many other mechanisms can be used instead telephone (including DLS/ADSL)
3. ‘Always on’ connection. The Internet connection stays active. Therefore, user may access randomly without wasting time. Connection is always ready to send and receive data.
4. Phone line is open for telephone calls. Broadband connections do not full use the phone line.
5. No additional cost for dialing and handshaking time. User may pay whatever they downloaded or predefined monthly charge.
6. Smooth working with Video on Demand
7. Low Latency (DLS)
8. In a broadband system, digital data does not have to be converted into analogue. It uses a different part of the line's frequency spectrum, offers much wider bandwidth with 9 more lanes and does not interfere with the use of the line for voice transmission. When connected to the Internet, such a connection allows surfing or downloading much faster than a dial-up connection.
Dialup connection normally users a built-in modem to connect and does not require a special router, whereas broadband requires a special router or modem.
Disadvantages of Broadband
1. High Price. Not only connection charges, modem prices are also high.
2. Security concerns. This is an active connection. You can also have a static IP.
3. Congestion on the lines. This may slow down the connection.
4. ADSL/DSL is easily affected on undersea fiber optic cables’ traffic. Many broadband users addicted to download high capacity files such as movie videos or to P2P file shearing, often requiring extended durations of high bandwidth and can cause major problems for ISPs who have excessively overbooked their capacity.
