The Princess Grace Hospital (PGH) is a private hospital in Marylebone and is part of HCA Healthcare UK. The ITU is well-appointed, has 9 beds and provides critical care for surgical, medical and oncological patients. Typical surgical specialties include Hepatobiliary, Colorectal and Spinal.
Shifts run from 7am-7am and with two consultant–led ward rounds each day. Other typical activities include reviewing Outreach patients on the wards and supporting the resuscitation team. The unit is led by Dr David Howell and Prof David Walker, with consultant support also provided by Drs Jim Down, Roger Cordery, Nick Harper and Rob Stephens.
One and a half 24hr shifts per week provides roughly the same salary as a banded NHS SpR post. The rota is self-organised on a Google calendar amongst the fellows and so provides a welcome degree of autonomy (approach Duncan Wagstaff for access). Fellows get 10 days of annual leave per year.
This role works well to give fellows enough time and money to pursue research whilst still maintaining contact with the clinical world.
