The London Clinic is a private hospital near Marylebone, and many of the fellows do shifts on the ICU there to fund their time in research.
The ICU is a 13-bedded unit located on the 2nd floor of the main hospital building in 22 Devonshire Place. The unit has been newly refurbished and is very well-specified, with the capacity to manage ventilation at all 13 bedspaces.
Supervision is provided by 5 UCL ICU consultants, mainly Dr John Goldstone and Prof Geoff Bellingan, with a smaller number of on-calls covered by Dr Sara Polhill (mainly Tuesdays), Dr Niall MacCallum, and Dr Dan Martin.
The fellows do six 24hr shifts a month and shifts start at 08:00hrs until 08:00hrs the next day. You are allowed to take 8 of these shifts off as Annual Leave in a year. Study Leave can also be accommodated for things like mandatory training for the hospital and ALS. We now have a Google Sheet rota where fellows take turns to select shifts with a rolling order of selection. The system generally works well, and fellows are very accommodating with swaps.
Handover takes place on the unit in the doctors' office near the nursing station, and the nurses will likewise handover amongst themselves at the nursing station as a group, before going to the bedside to handover between themselves. You will then generally round on the patients on your own, to be joined by the consultants later in the morning.
Although clinical supervision is provided by the consultants above, your line manager is actually the ICU manager, Prudencia Jennings (currently acting manager).
