SS CONNECTION

Social Studies component option #1 Historical Connections

The history of glass-making is traced back to 3500 B.C.E. in Mesopotamia. Archaeological evidence says that first glass was made in Syria, Mesopotamia, and Ancient Egypt. Glass was produced by people who did metal working and made little beads out of it.

Glass is known as a luxury material nowadays, people use it for in cups, in doors, windows, for the framings of the cars, for dining tables, ceramic and metal work and a variety of other things.

glass is made out of pure Silica or SiO2, and has a melting point of 2000 degrees Celsius, (which would be approximately 3600 degrees Fahrenheit). Another element is Sodium Carbonate (Na2CO3), also known as potash, and lime (calcium oxide CaO) is another component. Any other additional things mixed in would be for color use only, to change the color the glass will look like.

Singing Glasses

My PBL project on Physics is about glasses that sing. You can make glasses sing too! You just need a round wine glass, your hand and a bit of water. It's that easy. First, you wet your finger, dip it in water perhaps. Secondly, you run your index finger (any other finger would be fine also) around the rim of the glass, in a circular motion. If you let a couple of seconds pass while still doing that, you will start to hear a high pitched noise. Now, you may wonder where that noise is coming from. This noise comes from the vibrations you are making with your wet finger. It may sound weird at first, even a bit annoying, but you might be surprised of where the noise is coming from, the glass! you are making that sound with your wet finger whilst running it around the rim. Congratulations , you have made glass sing! If you go back in time a bit and research where glass comes from, you might find the answer a bit interesting. It is known that the first glass was known to be made in Syria, and perhaps ancient Egypt. I chose to connect my PBL project with Historical Connections.
