DERIVING QUESTION: I wonder if you can make a song with different frequencies?
INTRODUCTION: My PBL project is about singing glasses. It consists of vibration
Grab a wine glass
Dip the tip of your index finger in water
Run the wet tip of the index finger around the rim of the wine glass
Do it consistently
Wait and see how the glass starts vibrating constantly and starts singing
SCIENTIFIC PRINCIPLE: Scientific principles are repeated observations that describes the aspects of life. And when you create vibrations with the glass it gives you a nice soothing sound to listen to.
Resonance is caused when an object is oscillated and its exerting waves reach an object with the same natural frequency as the oscillated object, once in contact the object reached by this waves performs the same motion as the object exerting the waves, in Physics, this is called resonance.
When you rub your finger around the rim water inside the glass reaches with same frequency where starts making different pitch of sounds (vibration of your finger resonates with the water) related with the level of the water. The more water we have higher the pitch.
SAFETY REGULATIONS: The only thing you should be to be careful and not drop the wine glass because glass can be dangerous at some point, please remember to be safe at all times!
MATERIALS:
4 (round) wine glasses
Water
PROCEDURE:
!. Grab a wine glass. Doesn't mater if it has water inside it or not, with different water levels, higher or lower pitches are created, have fun with it!
2. Dip the tip of your index finger in water (hot or cold doesn't matter)
3. Run the wet tip of the index finger around the rim of the wine glass
4. Do it consistently
5. Wait and see how the glass starts vibrating constantly and starts singing
6. BE CAREFUL! MAKE SURE TO GRAB THE WINE GLASS FROM THE BASE, or else the cup wont vibrate and no sound will be made.
