Journal Entry #1

How i decided to do my PBL project is interesting. A while back, about a year ago I went to a friends house. They offered me quite an amazement. Some young man asked me if I had ever heard a glass sing. I thought he was crazy, because how could glasses sing? But he proved me wrong and showed me glasses could sing. He dipped his finger in water and started tracing around the rim of the wine glass. To my surprise, the wine glass started making a high pitched noise. This interested me a lot and i decided to do it as my PBL project.

But how I obtained my research papers on singing glasses, is a bit more interesting. It is a bit more harder to explain how the noise comes out of the glass. Truth is, by tracing your finger around the rim of the wine glass you make a vibration. With that vibration it makes a noise. Noise bounces off the walls of the round glass. This could not work if the finger was not dipped in water. Nor if the wine glass wasn't completely circular on the inside.

My project idea came to me a few months ago when a friend of mine told me he could do magic by making glasses sing. he then spun his wet finger around the rim of a wine glass and I heard a sound, much like a strong vibration. I was amazed by what he was doing, I later asked how that was possible and he explained that the vibration frequency makes a musical tone. When I got home I showed my family how to do this. As my PBL project I decided this was a nice thing to do, and so I tried and tried until I became pretty good at making the glasses sing.

Journal Entry #4

My thoughts while doing the PBL project were amazing. It is incredible how such marvelous sound can come out of the glass. All by tracing your finger around the rim of the cup. But what amazes me the most is that it only works a certain way. It can only "sing" if your finger is wet, otherwise its a waste of time. Another condition is that the inside of the wine glass MUST be round and not have a design on the inside of the cup. This consists in the vibration bouncing off evenly and making the harmonious noise it makes. If the glass cup weren't to be round, no singing would be created by the wine glass.

My revisions for the PBL project were that the details counted. Even the smallest details here counted, if the glass had a little tiny bit of water in it, the noise it would make would be completely different from a glass without water. You have to take in consideration the most insignificant details. And isnt it amazing how it only works with water? Only if your finger is wet and dipped in water will it work. Those were some of the thoughts that went through my head during my revelations of the PBL project. And how amazed i was at the facts that not many people knew about this.

Journal Entry #6

Sound is basically be indetified as vibration. The bigger the vibration waves are the higher the sound gets. When the glass contains water it reduces the mass inside causing less vibration. If a cup is almost full there wont be enough space to make much sound therefore the sound will be low pitched and wont be as high if there was more space. Some revisions that will have to be made is noticing how much water the glass contains. You have to be careful with how much water you will fill the glass with.

Journal Entry #7

My outcome of this expirement was very sucessful. I enjoyed working on this PBL project, it was challenging and not to mention fun. I found it intresting because i never knew that the amonut of water could affect how the sound waves are heard. The outcomes were amazing because it teached me that water can affect the vibration of each way. Nevertheless it is important to know that the glass must be round shaped (preferably a wine glass) otherwise no sound waves will be created.

Journal Entry #8

Some of my fustrations was that the expirement was a bit confusing. I would have thought that the more water the glass contained the sound waves would have been higher in pitch. What fustrated me was having the right amount of water to get the perfect pitch. I had many fustrations with this exppirement because im a very impatient person and the water levels werent making a good sound. Another fustration i had was being able to find a glass cup that its inside was round shape. If the glass wouldnt have been round on the inside the vibrating sound waves would be bouncing all around the cup and not make any noise.

Journal Entry #9

This expirement can help me later on in life because if i work for a glass company or water company and im bored i could impress my coworkers. This can also help me later on in life if they ask me to do a presentation or give an example on how sound waves can be affected and i can show them this expirement. For my Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday celebration i will spend it with my beloved family and show them my new trick that i learned. I have a lot of family members to which i can all show them this and they can all be impressed by my trick and be inspired to try it as well and be more intrested in physics. I can start off the new year (2014) inspiring many of my family members that will be at my house for new years.

Journal Entry #10

When i have kids with my current partner i will teach them how to make glasses sing. All of my five children will learn what i have expirienced doing my PBL project. I will explain this expirement to my 3 girls and my 2 boys. This will help my kids in the future because they can use this for their science project or STEM project. I am so glad i now have this knowledge in my mind to show off to the rest of the world. I would also like to show them how great physics is. I also think this would be good to show my kids so that way when they grow up they can also show their kids and it can keep going on through our generation.
