Semester 1 Revision
UW 131, Senior English Vinson, David L. Directions: This is IT! You have (most of you) successfully navigated Sequence #1 to get to this point: Revision. Ahh…but, you still have the final hill. It’s time to select ONE paper from Sequence #1 or Sequence #2 (what we’ve completed) and improve it with SIGNIFICANTREVISION that will determine, along with a cover letter, your 1st semester grade. Good Luck! You must turn in THIS FORM with the FINAL DRAFT you revise…keep in mind that you must show sufficient MASTERY of two (2) Outcomes in this one revised paper. Look over your Sequence #1 papers and Sequence #2, (A and B), then decide (this is a marriage—there will be no divorce nor breakups, sudden emergencies, etc—this is final) which paper you would like to use for Revision. You will write questions you have about the OUTCOMES (how to meet them) to show how you’ll reveal mastery. If you have a D or lower in class, you must show mastery of ALL four Outcomes. Paper: Sequence: 1 Paper: A B C D Sequence: 2 Paper: A B Outcomes: 1 2 3 4 (and every bullet point underneath these Outcomes) What will you do to your final draft in Revision to show mastery of the above Outcome(s)? Write AT LEAST THREE SENTENCES that show you know what you need to do to hit the Outcome(s) you have selected above. Write THREE questions you have for me how to assist you in achieving these two Outcomes for when we meet one on one! 3 Sentences of what I need to do: 1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3 Question I have about my paper—Outcome-related!!! 1. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 2. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ 3. __________________________________________________________________________________________________ ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ Revision is due @7:30am

The COVER LETTER is BRAND NEW—it will serve as the basis of the assessment. Look over your papers and decide which papers you would like to use for Revision. Cover Letter and Portfolio Assignment
Your final major assignment for high school English is to complete a portfolio cover letter and submit a portfolio of one revised Major Paper E for evaluation, your 1st semester revision paper and then 1-5 shorter papers, and a 2-3-page single spaced portfolio cover letter. Your portfolio should contain all of your work this year including homework assignments, paper drafts, peer reviews, etc. See your portfolio checklist for more exact information on what your portfolio must contain. I will not read a Cover Letter that is longer than 3 pages…your papers need to show significant revision! You will remain at school all day or face a 50% deduction on your Revision. The following order will be used for submission and evaluation: (1) Portfolio cover letter (this is COMPLETELY DIFFERENT from 1st semester) (2) Revised major paper of your choice in final revised version—each Outcome underlined and labeled in RED pen three times and WRITTEN REFLECTIONS on the back of Works Cited(3) 1st Semester revised paper(4) Shorter papers in order—some of you will have 0; some will have more than 0 here—each paper will have WRITTEN REFLECTIONS on the back of the Works Cited (5) Revision Selection Sheet (what you picked/why) This is Section #1 of your portfolio/binder and will all be handed in in your manila folder. Your final drafts with Rubrics remain in their sections as I only want the final draft of your papers in the manila folder and handed in with your binder! You may NOT be missing a single assignment for your portfolio to be graded—please keep this in mind! Your portfolio cover letter is itself an argument. Your claim, the basis of the argument, should involve how what you are including in your portfolio meets the learning Outcomes for the class. Draw upon the Course Outcomes, your assignments, current assessment of the work, your original self-assessments, your peer responses, and my responses by quoting from or paraphrasing these materials. Point to specific passages in the texts of your papers, showing me their strengths in demonstrating the course Outcomes, as well as pointing out areas for improvement. Specifically show me how the work you have selected for evaluation literally demonstrates your knowledge and ability to meet the course Outcomes! Back up your claims with strong evidence from your own writing, your revisions, and the course Outcomes. Basically, your cover letter should make an argument for why the pieces you have selected for evaluation represent your absolute best work. You must incorporate your 1st semester revision paper changes into this new cover letter (note your 3-page limit) writing to me as if you just completed this 1st semester paper during this Revision season…The cover letter is a very important part of your portfolio; it provides the rhetorical situation for you to influence how the reader of your portfolio (that’s me!) will view your work. This is a great time to influence and direct your audience. For example, if I have had difficulty locating your “so whats” you may want to make a case for how you have attempted to alleviate this problem within your cover letter. If you have spent a lot of time strengthening your claim and making sure it progresses throughout your paper, point this out to me and prove it! This is your chance to “talk yourself up” just as you would in a resume cover letter; convince me that your revisions have drastically improved your papers. Finally, remember, I will NOT be doing much marking on your revisions—this is key—your cover letter is the key to making sure that you pass the UW Writing Course. Those of you not taking the class for UW credit, your cover letter is still vital to the 70% of your grade—take your time and give your cover letter much thought and consideration!
Revision Rubric
Directions:Your cover letter was the catalyst for the reading of your papers! Also, going through your notebooks, you were deducted for not having YOUR papers: your tests/quizzes; your assignments; your work. While I applaud you for having something, you should have had your own work as there was always ample time devoted to this process.
