I am an associate professor in the economics area of Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. I hold a bachelor's degree in economics from Presidency College, Kolkata, Master's degree in Quantitative Economics from Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and PhD from Boston University. I hold a visiting professorship in the business school of University of Sussex, UK. Currently, I serve in the editorial board of Economic Modelling as an associate editor.
My research focus is primarily on economic connections and how they shape macroeconomic behavior. Technically, I am interested in networks and how they relate to market outcomes for firms, consumers and the economy as a whole. Macroeconomic behavior can be modeled by directly modelling the aggregate behavior of the economy - much of the macroeconomics literature developed this way. Recently, availability of large scale data has made it possible to map the linkages between economic entities - specifically firms and households, and keep track of their behavior over time. This has made, in turn, it possible to construct a detailed picture of how macro fluctuations and dynamics arise from micro-level behavior. My current work is in this direction. A complementary strand of research I have engaged in, is to study evolution of industries through firm-level responses to external shocks - both supply side shocks like regulatory changes, and demand side shocks- like preference changes.
This stream of research has published in peer-reviewed outlets such as American Economic Journal: Applied Economics, Research Policy, Journal of Economic Dynamics and Control, Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, Canadian Journal of Economics and Social Networks among others. I have had the opportunity of working with Chirantan Chatterjee, Matt Higgins, Sawan Rathi, Shekhar Tomar, Kanika Mahajan and Pavel Chakraborty among others. The full list of my coauthors is available in my research page on this website. Along with Chirantan Chatterjee and Anil Deolalikar, I have co-edited a book on the effects of Covid-19 on global health, innovation and economy. This was published by World Scientific Press, Singapore as part of their grand challenges series.
There is a second stream of literature that I have worked on. This interest developed from an idea that an economy is fundamentally a complex system - characterized by networks, dynamics and emergence. I have worked with physicists on this kind of modeling approach and problems, which resulted in a series of papers published in journals in statistical physics/networks including Physical Review E, European Physical Journal B, Scientific Reports (Nature), Journal of Complex Networks and finance journals such as Quantitative Finance and The European Journal of Finance. I have had the opportunity to work with Sitabhra Sinha, Tiziana Di Matteo, Bikas Chakrabarti, Arnab Chatterjee and Taisei Kaizoji among others. I have co-authored with Shuvo Bakar and Anirban Chakraborty, a book titled Data Science for Complex Systems published by Cambridge University Press, UK summarizing some of the toolkits utilized in this kind of analysis. I have co-edited a book with Taisei Kaizoji and Lukas Pichl on network theory and agent-based modeling published by Springer, Singapore.
I have presented my work in seminars and conferences globally - in the UK, US, Canada, Australia, Japan, Singapore, Germany and South Korea among others. I conceptualized and organized the Network Science conference - which is held at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. I also conceptualized and was the chairperson for the committee building a high-performance computing lab at Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad back in 2019. At IIMA, I served as the UTI Chair in Macroeconomics from 2022 till 2025. I have served and currently serving in a second term as the chair of ePGD in Advanced Business Analytics program at the post-graduate level in Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
Some of my works have been widely covered in the national media outlets - including in CNBC awaaz, Times of India and Frontline. I have contributed to globally well known policy platforms including VoxEU, VoxDev and Ideas for India. One of our policy reports on Labour-force perception of AI has been cited by the Economic Survey of India 2024-25, Ministry of Finance, Government of India.
I have taught extensively MBA-level and PhD-level courses on macroeconomics, time series econometrics, mathematical methods and networks. My PhD students have been placed at IIT Bombay (Sawan Rathi; main advisor), OP Jindal Global University (Abinash Mishra; main advisor) and Ahmedabad University (Mayank Aggarwal; committee member).
In addition to research work, I have actively engaged in consultancies to help companies and the government to analyze their data and formulate economic and financial strategies, primarily focusing on forecasting, portfolio management, risk quantification, impact evaluation and market analytics.
