Little Moose Island

Little Moose Island is located just east of Schoodic Point on the Schoodic Peninsula, which is part of Acadia National Park. The small island is accessible by foot when the tide is low.

How to get there from Orono, ME

Approximately 1 hour 35 minutes drive.

Take route 1A south from Brewer to Ellsworth, then take Rt. 1 east. Turn right on Rt. 186, go through Winter Harbor, then turn right off Main Street to get to the Schoodic Peninsula (there are National Park signs to guide the way). The road becomes a one-way loop, and goes by Schoodic Point, a good place to stop and walk around on the rocks and enjoy wonderful coastal views and crashing surf. Less than one mile from Schoodic Point is a small turn out that is the beginning of the access way to Little Moose Island.

Hiking conditions:

You have to walk across the low tide (caution: slippery seaweed and wet rocks!) area to get to the island. There you will walk up the rocky beach to a shrubby, fairly level land with a well-worn trail that goes to the far point of the island. We did not find a loop trail, but there are many side trails to explore before returning to the rocky shore. Enjoy the wild blueberries in season, and the colors of the beach roses, laurel and sea lavender along the way.

Nearby attractions:

The Schoodic Peninsula has many things to offer with its coastal villages, working harbors, and grandeur of scenic areas. Summer and fall are the height of the season.
