CM

What is the CM Test?

CM stands for Certificate of Merit, which is a nationwide music exam administered by the MTAC (Music Teacher’s Association of California) Since 1934. CM consists of 5 categories: music theory, ear-training, sight-reading, technique and the actual performance. The CM test usually takes place in either February or March.

What are the benefits of taking the CM?

College entrance is one of the greatest reasons why students take the CM, especially if your child would like to apply to a UC or an Ivy League school. Universities have stated that the CM is accepted and recommended for a student’s resume. Colleges have been demanding to see how students have been spending their time outside of school with extracurricular activities as well as their academic grades. Colleges especially want to see your child’s workload, enthusiasm, time management skills, while living their everyday lives especially and looking for consistency during the 9th -11th grade.

How the CM Program Works:

Student Registration takes place from September 15 through November 15. Joyce studio will register your child through online registration system. Students must be age 5 or older as of November 15 (the CM Registration Deadline) to participate in the CM Program.

Registered students participate in an annual Evaluation program, which is conducted from mid-February through April throughout the state of California..

Based on the Evaluation, students receive a written musical performance assessment. Students will also complete a written theory exam, which includes an ear training component.

Upon successful completion of all components of the Evaluation, students receive an official MTAC CM Certificate.

Senior medallions will be awarded to eligible high school seniors.

Students who demonstrate exceptional skill at his/her Evaluation may be selected to perform at annual MTAC State Convention Recitals.
