Jim Arnold Invite: Darbandi Becomes First Red Devil to go Under State Qualifying Mark

Saturday, May 1 -- The Red Devil's competed Saturday at the 16-team Jim Arnold Invite, hosted by Conference rival Glenbard West. The highest finisher for the Red Devil's was senior Arash Darbandi who ran a personal best time of 9:30.31 to finish runner-up in the 3200 run. His time is the fastest posted by a Red Devil in over five years, and eclipsed the state qualifying standard of 9:33.

Later in the meet, Darbandi's distance teammate Billy Fayette earned a bronze medal in the 1600 run with a fine showing of 4:25.8. Earlier in the day, Fayette joined Azad Darbandi, Drew Justus and Robbie Larson on the 4*800 team which ran a season best time of 8:18.8 and finished 4th. The frosh/soph 4*800 team composed of Tom Lyons, Ryan Somerfield, Mike Korompilas and Dan Chan also earned a medal, finishing 3rd in 8:53.

The other top three showing at the meet went to Ryan Daleen, who finished 3rd in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles (44.99). His teammate, Reed Wigley, earned a fourth place finish in the 110 high hurdles (16.67), and sophomore Ryan Callen had another fine performance in the shot put, finishing 4th with a throw of 44'4.5".

Capping off the meet was an all underclassmen 4*400 team of Ben Cherry, Azad Darbandi, Connor Furlong and Max Von Mollinkradt that finished 4th in an impressive of 3:31.9. Von Mollinkradt had a major breakthrough with a personal best split of 52.3!

Red Devil Freshmen/Sophomore Invite

Wednesday, April 28 -- The Frosh/Soph team finished runner-up to a powerful Downers Grove South squad. Many great performances but most notable was in the Shot Put. Freshman Nick Piker set the school outdoor record with a toss of45' 10''. This throw eclipsed the old record (44' 7") set back in 1976. Nick now owns the Freshman indoor & outdoor school records!

The Red Devil's had a terrific TEAM effort and showed that this group of young men are on a path to excellence!

Lyons Township Relays

There were several great relay and individual performances on this cool, overcast, Friday evening.

Highlights:

    • 4 x 1600 Meter Relay finishes runner-up in 18:09; Relay members included Arash Darbandi-sr. (4:27), Billy Fayette-jr. (4:24), Zach Withall-jr. (4:35), and Jack Feldman-so. (4:41).

    • Sprint Medley Relay also places 2nd in 3:40; Jordan Cray-sr. (400-52.0), Connor Furlong-so. (200-23.5), Mark Roszkowski-fr. (200-24.0), and Azad Darbandi-jr. (800-2:01).

    • Distance Medley Relay nabs 3rd place in 10:45; Billy Fayette-jr. (1200-3:14), Connor Furlong-so. (400-53.0), Ted Owens-so. (800-2:03), and Arash Darbandi-sr. (1600-4:35).

    • 4 x 400 meter Relay captures gold in 3:26; Victor Twardowski-sr. (51.3), Jordan Cray-sr. (51.8), Ben Cherry-jr. (51.9), and Chris Kiser-sr. (51.5)

Bud Mohn's Invite

The Red Devil’s took to the oval at the Bud Mohn’s Invitational in Downers Grove last Saturday on a sunny, windy, cool Midwestern day. The men continued to make big strides and garner more personal records as the outdoor campaign makes headway through the month of April.

At the Varsity level the Red Devil’s captured two gold medals in Billy Fayette-1600 meter run, and the 4 x 400 meter relay. Fayette took control of the race after 400 meters and never looked back as he finished in a life-time best of 4:26.0. The 4 x 400 relay which included Victor Twardowski (51.3), Jordan Cray (52.0), Chris Kiser (52.7), and Ben Cherry (51.9) scored a victory for the second consecutive week matching their season best of 3:28.12. Arash Darbandi earned a silver medal in the 3200 meter run as he led much of the race and battled it out with a York Duke for the final 400 meters. Darbandi clocked a life-time best of 9:40. In the open 400 meter dash Jordan Cray (52.32) and Chris Kiser (52.33) finished 3rd and 4th respectively both narrowly missing their 400 meter life time bests. The 4 x 200 (1:35.6) and 4 x 800 (8:45) meter relays both finished in 5thplace. The 4 x 200 relay included Twardowski, Cherry, John Lizzadro, and Jared Bates and the 4 x 800 relay consisted of Drew Justus (2:09), TJ Collanto (2:12), Brad Somerfield (2:13), and Robbie Larson (2:10). Mitch Green continues to develop in the hurdle events after shoulder surgery this winter as he finished 5thin the 110 High Hurdles (16.26) and fellow hurdler Alex Fitch also finished 5th in the 300 Intermediate Hurdles in a P.R. of 42.26.

On the Sophomore level Jack Feldman and Connor Furlong both finished 1st in their respective events. Feldman earned a huge P.R. in the 3200 meter run by a whopping 24 seconds finishing up in 10:11. Furlong ran a strong 400 meters recording a time of 53.69. Reed Wigley and Ryan Daleen earned runner-up positions in the 110 High Hurdles and 300 Intermediate Hurdles. Both men clocked 16.16 and 43.95 respectively. The 4 x 400 meter relay also finished runner-up with a time of 3:44. This quartet included Max Von Mollinkrodt (54.7), Ted Owens (55.6), Jack Feldman (57.7), and Anthony Vicino (56.1). Ryan Callen finished 3rd in the Discus with a throw of 117-6 and the 4 x 800 also earned a silver medal which included Dan Chan (2:13), Mike Korompilas (2:12), Forrester Evertsen (2:17), and Neil Pedersen (2:20). Other performances on the day included Ted Owens (3200 meter run-10:29, 4th place), Arjun Reddy (1600 meter run-4:50, 4th place), Connor Furlong (200 meter dash-23.4, 4th place), Tom Lyons (800 meter-2:11, 5th place), Callen (Shot Put-42-10, 5th place), Ryan Somerfield (1600 meters run-4:54, 5th place), Von Mollinkrodt (400 meters-56.1, 6th place), and the 4 x 200 relay (1:38-5th place; Mark Roszkowski, Anthony Vicino, Andre Nelson, and Chandler Hawkins).

Red Devil's Open Outdoor Season at Hinsdale Relays

This past Saturday, the Hinsdale Central Red Devil's headed across town to the windy confines of Hinsdale South for the season opening meet. Despite less than ideal conditions, several team members achieved personal bests, and the Devil's ran strong against conference rivals Lyons Township and Oak Park River Forest. Leading the way for Hinsdale was the 4*400 relay of Ben Cherry, Jordan Cray, Chris Kizer, and Victor Twardorski. The 4*400 ran 3:28 to lower their season best time by 3 seconds en route to a 2nd place finish behind Lyons Township. This foursome has already matched the best time they put up in 2009, and hope to earn a trip down state. The other second place finish was earned by the Distance Medley team of Arash Darbandi, Jack Feldman, Connor Furlong, and Billy Fayette. Fayette took the baton 20 meters behind Sam Telfer of Lyons Township and made up all the lost ground, only to be outkicked by Telfer in the final straightaway despite a valiant effort. His split for the 1600 was 4:32, and came just two hours after leading off the third place 4*1600 team with a season best time of 4:30.6. Joining Fayette on the 4*1600 were Darbandi (4:31 personal best), Feldman (4:42 personal best), and senior Joe Berg (4:49, personal best). The entire team will next compete in a dual meet against Glenbard West on Tuesday, while the Varsity and Frosh/Soph teams will compete in the Bud Mohn's Invitational at Downers Grove South on Saturday.

Sophomores 3rd, Varsity 5th at WSC Indoor Meet

Sophomore Hurdlers Reed Wigley and Ryan Daleen were the stars of the day at the WSC conference meet, held this past Friday at York High School. The duo finished 1-2 in both the 55 low hurdles and 55 high hurdles, scoring a combined 36 points for the team. Ryan Callen also joined Wigley and Daleen on the victory podium by winning the shot put in his final throw.

Runner-up performances were turned in by the sophomore 4*800 of Ted Owens, Mike Korompilas, Ryan Somerfield, and Neil Pedersen; by the sophomore 4*200 team of Mark Rozkowshi, Ryan Scwharz, Mike Krohn, and Connor Furlong; by Jack Feldman in the sophomore 800, and by the Varsity 4*400 team of Chris Kizer, Jordan Cray, Vic Twardorski, and Ben Cherry. The 4*400 capped off an impressive meet for the Devil's by finishing less than one second off the school record time.

Freshman Earn 5th Place at WSC Meet; Piker Takes Individual Shot Put Title

At the Freshman Conference meet on Monday, the Red Devil's earned a 5th place finish and had several more athletes earn all-conference honors by finishing in the top 6 within their event. Leading the way was the shot-put duo of Piker and Kallas who went 1-5 with throws of 42'7.5" and 30'8" respectively. Runner-up honors went to Ryan Somerfield in the 1600 (5:07) and the 4*800 team of Somerfield, Mike Korompilas, Alec Wohlever, and Steven Tyson (9:18). The indoor season has now officially ended, and the Devil's look to several weeks of intense training before the first meet of the outdoor season, the Hinsdale Relays, scheduled for April 11th.

Dual of the Districts

The Red Devil track team headed to Hinsdale South this past Friday to participate in the annual Dual of the Districts against local rivals Hinsdale South, Downers South, and Downers North. Highlights from the meet included Sankalp Kota setting a team best mark of 39'5" in the long jump and Sophomore Ryan Callen besting his own previous team-best mark in the shot put with a throw of 46'5". On the Sophomore level, Tom Lyons won the 1600 in a career best 4:54, leading the Devil's to four of the top 5 positions in that event. Sophomores Ryan Daleen and Reed Wigley finished 2nd and 3rd in both the 55 low and 55 high hurdle events.

Downers Grove South Mustang Relays

Monday, March 8 -- The Red Devil’s took to the oval on Monday evening and competed against several of the top tier teams across the area. Powerhouse programs included the likes of Neuqua Valley, Downers South, Lyons Township, Whitney Young, and many more. All of the men stepped up to the challenge and proved that they can mix it up with the very best relays across the state.

The men’s 4*800 meter relay posted a seasonal best running 8:19 to secure a 6thplace finish. This relay included Nick Tyson (2:06.6), Azad Darbandi (2:04.3),Billy Fayette (2:03.0), and Arash Darbandi (2:05.6). Both Azad and Billy posted life-time bests dropping their 800 meter P.R.’s. Azad by 1.2 seconds and Billy by 3.1 seconds! The 4*200 meter relay, which included Chris Kiser (23.9),Cameron Legan (23.8), Ben Cherry (24.6), and Victor Twardowski (23.4) also finished 6th place overall racing to a time of 1:35.88. In the evenings final event, the 4*400 meter relay of Kiser (54.3), Jordan Cray (52.9), Cherry (53.1), andTwardowski (52.7) finished 4th place overall and in the process posted a seasonal best of 3:32. 81.

Devil Sophomores Fourth at Highly Competitive Proviso West Invite

Ryan Callen was the lone individual champion for the Red Devils at the Proviso West Invitational this weekend, winning the shot put with a throw of 43'4.5". The Devil's also earned gold medals in the 4*200 and 4*400 meter relays, while taking the silver in the 4*800 relay and 400 meter dash. Conor Furlong anchored both winning relays, avoiding a mess of tangled runners in both races. Joining him atop the victory podium for the 4*200 relay was Mark Rozkowski, Mike Krohn, and Ryan Schwarz, who also ran third leg for the winning 4*400. Anthony Vicino and Max Von Mallinkradt rounded out the squad that won the meet's final event. For Von Mallinkradt, it was his second medal of the day, following the silver he earned for finishing second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.2. The other silver medalists for the Devil's was the 4*800 team of Jack Feldman, Ted Owens, Mike Korompilas, and Neil Pedersen, who completed the 16 lap race in 8:52.8, less than 2 seconds off champion York. The final top three finisher for the Red Devils was Ryan Daleen, who earned a bronze in the 55 hurdles running a time of 9.13.

The highest finish on the Varsity level went to the 4*200 team of Chris Kizer, Vic Twardorski, Zach Alleman, and Ben Cheri, who finished 4th in a highly competitive team. The 4*400 team of Kizer, Twardorski, Cheri, and Jordan Cray also ran well, finishing 5th out of the slow heat in 3:36.

Proviso West Friday Quad

Friday, February 19 -- Last Friday evening the Red Devil’s headed to Proviso West High School to compete in a quadrangular meet which included Downers Grove North, Conant, and Proviso West High Schools. It was the first opportunity for the athletes to compete on a 200 meter track, which would produce several strong early season times.

At the sophomore level the Red Devil’s bested the competition winning a close team race with 79.5 points to runner-up DGN who garnered 76.5 points. Event winners included the 3200 (Jack Feldman, Ted Owens, Tom Lyons, and Arjun Reddy), 800 (Max Von Mallinkrodt, Connor Furlong, Mike Krohn, Mark Roszkowski), and 1600 meter (Connor Furlong, Max VonMallinkrodt, Ben Herbst, Anthony Vicino) relays, Jack Wigley in the 55 Meter High Hurdles (9.1), Will Howsen in the 400 meter dash (59.6), Jack Feldman in the 600 meter dash (1:33), Tom Mulc in the High Jump (5’0”), and Ryan Callen in the Shot Put (44’0”). Runner-up performances included Zach Daleen in the 200 Meter Intermediate Hurdles (29.6), Ted Owens in the 1600 meter run (4:58), Mark Roszkowski in the 200 meter dash (25.2), and Temi Adelakum in both the Long and Triple Jump (16’5” & 35’5” respectively).

On the varsity level the men finished second to a well-rounded Downers North squad. Event winners included Arash Darbandi in the 800 meter dash (2:06) and DiMitri Mackall in the Triple Jump (37’3”). Second place finishers were: the 3200 (Azad Darbandi, Nick Tyson, Joe Berg, Drew Justus), 800 (Chris Kiser, Victor Twadarski, Zach Alleman, Ben Cherry), and 1600 (Chris Kiser, Nick Tyson, Jordan Cray, Ben Cherry) meter relays. Alex Fitch garnered runner-up honors in the 55 Meter High Hurdles as did Jack Kelly in the 400 meter dash (56.2), Azad Darbandi in the 600 meter dash (1:31), and Zach Alleman in the 200 meter dash (24.2).

Devils Compete in Little Four Invite

The Red Devil's opened their season this past Friday night by hosting the annual Little Four Invite. The Sophomore team finished 2nd and the Varsity 3rd in the four team event. Individual Champions included Ryan Daleen in the sophomore 55 High Hurdles and 55 Low Hurdles, Arjun Reddy in the sophomore 1600 run, Connor Furlong in the sophomore 200, and Dakota Limjuco in the sophomore Long Jump. On the Varsity level, senior Alex Fitch was the runner-up in the 55 Low Hurdles and 55 High Hurdles, while senior Sankalp Kota had a huge personal best long jump of 20'0" to finish second.
