Public Speaking is an elective course designed for students interested in competitive speech and concentrates on extemporaneous/impromptu speech and oration. Students will enhance their ability to speak before large and small groups and will increase their knowledge and understanding of current events. Students will learn the concepts and skills related to preparing and presenting public messages and to analyzing and evaluating messages of others. Students will gain skills in researching, reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking and will examine areas such as invention, organization, style, memory, and delivery. Success in Public Speaking will depend on students’ work ethic both in class and at home, as well as their willingness to step outside of their comfort zone and challenge themselves. In addition, they will need to demonstrate a commitment to regular tournament attendance and a willingness to use the constructive criticism provided by their peers, judges and coaches to improve their organization, writing and presentation skills.
