Debate 1 - Controversial issues arise in aspects of personal, social public, and professional life in modern society. Debate and argumentation are widely used to make decisions and reduce conflict. Students who develop skills in argumentation and debate become interested in current issues, develop sound critical thinking, and sharpen communication skills. They acquire life-long skills for intelligently approaching controversial issues and clashes of opinion. The development of reasoning, logic, argumentation, critical thinking, listening, writing, and oral performance skills are a main focus of this course. The content of the course is designed to help students work towards achieving personal goals while contributing to the success and improvement of the entire team. Each 9-week period students will learn through research projects, tournament competition, practice debates, and mentoring. Students will succeed in Debate 1 if they have (or develop) a strong work ethic, a commitment to regular tournament attendance, and a love of debate competition.
