Hawaii Photo Shooters

On May 9, 2024 at 6 p.m., Chris King will give a presentation on "South Georgia Island!" Chris explains "South Georgia is a small island (106 miles by 22 miles) with a resident population of about 30 scientists. It sits alone in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean. It has been described as having the unusual animals of the Galapagos, the animal density of the Serengeti, and the mountains and glaciers of the Andes. It also has a history intertwining man and nature as illustrated by the mapping and exploration by Cook, the rape and destruction of the animal life by the 19th and 20th century sealers and whalers, the animals' subsequent rebounding population, and the unbelievable survival story of Shackleton and his men. As a place to visit and photograph, it is unrivalled. I will show some images taken during my five visits there when I experienced the various animals, vistas and weather that South Georgia presents. It is a very special place in our world."

The meeting will be a hybrid one at the Komohana Research & Extension Center (875 Komohana St., Hilo) .  The exact conference room will be announced shortly before May 9 due to re-roofing construction taking place. If you would like to attend at a distance, please email Susan at sc_miyasaka@outlook.com by May 8.
