Then came an asura, named TrinAvarta in the form of a whirlwind & bore away
Krishna to the sky. Sri Krishna strangled him to death & he fell down with
a thud with Krishna above him. Here, Sri Vadiraja links the philosophical
truth that the effect merges into the cause. The sky is the cause & its
effect is the wind. So, it is meet that the asura in the form of wind met
with his death in the sky.
Yadhodha made a golden cradle set with diamonds & other precious stones,
put the babe Krishna, in it, pulled it from one side to the other & sang
Him to sleep. Sri Vadiraja had composed one verse in praise of the cradle
because it teaches us the lesson. If we pull it with the rope or chain (of
devotion), it brings Krishna near us & if we don't, it takes Him away from us.
Children put some questions which baffle us. Here is such a one put by Sri
Krishna to His mother, Yashodha. When she told Him to sleep, He asked her
'what is sleep'? This is verily a hard nut to crack for all but Yashodha
had its answer at her finger ends. She told Him that embracing PrAjna, who
is one of the various forms of God & is residing in our hearts is sound
sleep. This is exactly what is said in the MAndokya upAnishads.
Lest Kamsa should know the presence of Sri Krishna under Nanda's roof,
GargAchArya, the Purohit of the Yadhavas came to Gokula & performed naming
ceremony in Camera. Yashoda's child was named Krishna & Rohini's child
named Rama & Balabhadra. Sri Krishna began to crawl on fours, stood up with
some support & gradually walked from place to place. He indulged in all
sorts of boyish pranks such as stealing the milk, curds & butter in the
homes of the Gopis. He is an arch thief & steals away the heaps of our
sins by our mere remembrance of Him. The byword 'beg, borrow or steal'
seems to have its origin in His actions. As VAmana, He begged king Bali
for three feet of earth, as Lord Venkateswara, He borrowed a huge sum from
Kubera for His marriage expenses & as Krishna, He stole milk, curds,
butter, etc... Though He passed off for a human being, the mask falls off
at times & we have the glimpses of His divinity. When Balarama & other
boys reported that He ate mud, Sri Krishna denied it & opened His mouth for
her verfication. Lo! she saw the whole universe therein, along with a
Gokula, Yashoda & Himself with His mouth open before her.

After the death of the demon Sakata, another insolent demon (by name
TrnAvarta) who was like the life breath of the group of demons & who
assumed the body of a whirlwind caught hold of Sri Krishna & went to the
sky as if with the desire of a place suitable for his death. (N. B. - As
per the Shastras, the sky creates VAyu which merges into the sky.
dhusthaRkAyitha shRkarAmiramalam chashrussa: muShNan gavAmAvAse vasathAm
sathAmuruthamo visthArayanvArayan
thadhdhAkyashravaNam kaTOrakutiladhvAnai: yashodhAsutham
dhaithyOgUhayadhAgamAnthalalanAgaRBha kuvAdhIva tham [2]
The demon TrnAvarta hid the son of Yashodha covering with dust the clear
eyes of the good people living in Gokula, the abode of cows; enhancing the
darkness all around & preventing the hearing of the words of one another
with his harsh & unbearable sounds, even as a wicked debater hides God
Vishnu who is enshrined in the upanishads like the embryo of ladies by
illusioning with his fallible & flimsy arguments the clear knowledge of the
good devotees who are conning over the valid shastras, by exhibiting &
enhancing his vast ignorance & by preventing the hearing of the words of
the opener of the debate with his harsh & loud utterances.
thadhA svalasyOthpathanam sa shouri: hRudhAnumene pathithasya dhUrAth
girIndhrakalpOthpathithAthmamURthyA sharIramAchURNayimthu Dhiyeva [3]
At that time, Sri Krishna mentally approved the rogue's flying upwards as
if with the idea of totally crushing his body with His own body falling
over it like the mountains from afar in the sky.
harim sa samsThApya hadhi svakIye pariBramanbyOmni muhushvasamshcha
garam nipIya BramithAntharAthmA sarODhiyAbram pravishannivAsthe [4]
Keeping Sri Krishna on his chest, moving rapidly round & round in the sky,
repeatedly breathing heavily on account of the fatigue of carrying the
weighty Krishna & with his mind confused, he looked as though entering the
sky with the idea of its being a lake after drinking the poison ( in the
form of Krishna).
muradhdhimSha mURdhi niDhAya viShnO: padham praveShthum thvarayA gathOpi
asou papAthAmaravaiRyadhasthAthayOgyakAmasya kaTham na pAtha: [5]
Though this enemy of gods went upwards in haste with Sri Krishna (the foe
of demon Mura) on his head in order to enter the sky, he fell down. How
can there be no fall to one who aspires to the object for which he is not
qualified?
sa vAtharUpI dhithijOmukundhabharAsahiShNu: nipapAtha bhUmou
thaThA hi vAthasya javOdhikOpi kaThannu vishvambharamudviThaRthi

That demon TrnAvartha in the form of a whirlwind fell down on the earth
being unable to bear the weight of Sri Mukundha. It is proper. Though the
velocity of wind is great, how can it bear Sri Krishna who bears (in His
belly) the entire universe.
chakshuchouRyaphalam jagAma parivRuththAksha: prabhorojasA viShvak
sambramaNena dhaththathamaso vibrAnthamURDhA phalam
sAdhUnAm hadhayARthidhAnaphalitham klesham prapanna: kshithou mAthu:
pAthakara: parasya sa khala: pAShANam pRuShTEShathath

That wicked demon obtained the fruit of having blurred the eyes of the
people of Gokula in having his eyes whirling due to his neck being seized
with the strength of the able Krishna. He obtained the fruit of ignorance
in having his head reeling for having caused darkness all around by rapidly
turning of experiencing sorrow for having caused unhappiness in the minds
of the virtuous people. He who caused Yasodha (mother of Sri Krishna) to
fall down on the ground by his velocity himself fell on a rock.
AlolahaimavaradhAmavaRthI vithAnajAlAvalamvishubhamoukthikararamyamAlAm
dholAm viDhAya thadhupaRyadhiropya bAlam sAlokyasowKyamalabhiShta hadhA

Yashoda having made a cradle fastened with moving ropes of gold & necklaces
of auspicious pearls dangling from the groups of canopies & having laid the
babe Sri Krishna in it, mentally obtained the bliss of sAlokya moksha
(i.e., being in the same world with Lord Vishnu)
(N. B. Enjoyment of bliss in moksha is fourfold. 1. SAlokya 2. Sameepya
(being in close quarters with Him) 3. SAroopya (having four hands, etc,
like Him) & 4. SAyujya (entering His body & coming out at will).
dhAlAvilAsachalithAlaka shobhiphalam vAlam shuchismitha sudhArasashObhithAsyam
shyAmam samIkshya samayam kila shammayam sAthene kvaNathkanaka
nRupurabhobhipAdham [9]
Yashodha had a happy time throughout by having a look at her child who was
dark blue (like collyrium), whose forehead was shining with curls moving to
& fro by the rocking of the cradle, whose face was lit up with a good
(white) smile which was like the juice of nectar & with His feet adorned
with gold anklets which were making a jingling sound.

sAndrasthanasthuthpaya: kila pAyayanthI nandhasya

The queen of Nanda was passing her day time in fondling the babe Krishna by
moving His cheek gently with her excellent finger tips (in order to make
Him smile), then kissing His face lit up with a gentle smile & suckling Him
with the milk flowing out of her plump breasts (out of love).

Lord Achyutha having the nature of children & lying in the cradle kissed
His own toe in the form of a nourished & delightfull finger as if to honour
it for having broken the compound-wall of the Brahmanda with the mere edge
of its nail- an act which cannot be done by rows of gods, men & asuras put
together.

Yashodha- Go to sleep, Child.
Krishna- What's the use of sleeping, mamma?
Yashodha- What's eaten is digested.
Krishna- What's sleep, mamma?
Yashodha- Sleep is embracing the prAjna form of God with two eyes closed.
Krishna- Let it be so.
(After squeezing Himself with closed eyes) Krishna- All that is eaten is
digested. Then give me something.
May that Sri Krishna who told His mother thus protect His devotees!

Krishna- Mamma, why do you always sing about Sri Vishnu who lies on Sesha's
body?
Mother- Darling, I sing so that this Sri Vishnu who is sleeping may give
that sleep to you.
Krishna- If He sleeps how can all your speech enter the region of His ear?
May the son of Yashodha who expressed His opinion thus protect us!

The gopi girls whose hair was dark & shining & whose eyes were like those
of deer rocked the cradle holding it with their lotus- like hands, with
shining silk garments, necklaces, bangles, with the jasmine flowers falling
from their heads, with their limbs unsteady, with their groups of anklets
jingling, with their ear rings waving a little. They drew their beloved
Krishna near them along with the cradle.

jJyApayithu muraddhiShamitha: samprApayanthyakadhA
anyeShAm sa hi dhUragasithvithi thatha: prAPtham cha thAm kuRvathI dhOlA sA

The gem set cradle of the child whose body is of flawless bliss shines
supreme by bringing the foe of Mura (Sri Krishna) this side at one time
when we are pulling the rope of the cradle & taking Him that side at
another time when we are not doing so in order to remind us greatly that He
is reachable by those whose intellect is sAttvic & who serve Him & that He
is far away from those who do not serve Him.
sthanOthThadhugghena suthRupthamEnam nirUpayanthyA: sa hariRjaganthi
pradhaRshayAmAsa sa thRupthirasmAdhudhAradhehasya mamethi shikshan ||

To instruct (Yashodha): ' To me with this huge body there is no
satisfaction from this small quantity of milk,' He showed the (fourteen)
worlds to Yashodha who thinks that He is fully satisfied with her breast milk.
mukhe sa lokAnkhalu lokayithvA thadhantharEbbAm sagRuhAm sanAThAm
akhaNdayathputhramathim jananyAmayojayayath vishvapithRuthvabudhdhim ||
17 ||
Having shown in His mouth the (fourteen) worlds & within it His mother, her
house & her husband (and all), He removed from His mother the idea that He
was her son & created in her the knowledge that He is the father of the
Universe.
na nAma kuRvanthi mamEthi nUnam sa pUthanAdhIn vinihathya mAthu:
pradhaRshya vishwam jaTare svashakthyA bahUvi nAmAni babhAra bAla: || 18 ||
The child Krishna being angry as it were that His father & others did not
indeed perform His naming ceremony, Himself bore many names by killing
PUtana & others & by showing to His mother, the universe in His belly by
His power.
(N. B. Some of the names borne by Sri Krishna are PUtana ghAtaka (killer of
PutAna); SakatAsura bhanjana (One who shattered Sakatasura);
TrnAvartanisUdhana (destroyer of TrnAvarta); Visvambhara (the bearer of the
Universe).
aThaithya gaRga: kila rAmakRuShNow chakAra nAmnA vinethou suthou thou
aham thu manye chakithasthadhIyaguruthvakIthRyA jagRuhe thadhAkhyAm ||
19 ||
Afterwards GargAcharya (the priest of the YAdhavas) came & indeed named
those two obedient sons as RAma & Krishna. For my part, I think that he,
being afraid of the sins accruing from the fame of his being Krishna's
preceptor, pronounced the two names (as an expiation of the sin).
ananthnAmApi sa kRuShNasamjJnyAmavApya thuShta: kithna gaRgadhaththAm
thaThA hi shabdheShu bahUdhitheShu priyethitha: prIthikarO hi lOkE || 20 ||
Though Krishna had countless (other) names, He felt happy by the name
Krishna given by GargAcarya. It is but proper. For, in this world, out of
the names given by the many people, that given by a friend will indeed
cause happiness.
sapathnapanthivadhanOdurAjam kramENa ya: kshINaphalam karOthi
sithethara: paksha ivaRkshanATham guNochithA thasya hi kRuShNasamJnya

The name of Krishna was suitable to His qualities as He was going to make
the moon of the faces of the wives of His foes gradually lose their lustre
(by rendering them as widows) even as the dark fortnight does make the moon
(lord of the stars) lose its lustre gradually.
yatha: svasandhaRshanathO narANAm varAnganAnAm suracharaNAnAm
manAmsi saRvANyapakaRShathIsha: thathOpi kRuShNa pravadhanthi santha:

Also because by a mere look at Him the able Krishna attracts all the minds
of men, the superior women, gods & cAranas, the virtuous call Him Krishna.
yatha: sa pRuThvIthalasamsThithOpi sukhI dharaNyA: susvadhAyakashcha
thathOpi kRuShNam pravadhanthi kRushsamullasathkEshavakEsharUpam [23]
Though Krishna was living on this earth, He had happiness & gave happiness
to the goddess of earth. He was also of the form of the lustrous black
hair of Lord Vishnu (mUlarUpa). For these also, people call Him Krishna.
(N. B. SArjunAnagni hari kokila kAka sUdra tAmisra paksa kalinila gunesu
KRuShNa (Bhaskara).
yathashcha dhaitheyakadhambakakshachayasya vidhvamsavidhou murAri:
banAgnimanvEthi lathAgnikalpam thathOpi gAyanthi hi kRuShNenam [24]
Also become the foe of Mura who was like the fire of deluge in splendour
resembled the sylvan fire in the matter of reducing to ashes the heaps of
bushes of demons, people sing of Him as Krishna.
vrajAnganAnAm smarathAm munInAmamedhahadhapraNayAkhyadhAmnA
nibadhdhamRudhvagrisarOjayugmashchachAradhobhRyAm shubhajAnuyagbhyAm [25]
Because His two soft & lotus- like feet were tied fast with the unbreakable
& delightful rope of love of the ladies of Gokula & the meditating sages,
He crawled with His arms & two auspicious knees.
anekalOkAnudhare vidhAya ya esha shethe sma layAbbumadhye
shishu: sa sandhaRshayimthu salajja: kRushOdharam jAnucharO babhUva [26]
The child Krishna who sleeps in the middle of the waters of the deluge
keeping many worlds in His belly began to move with His knees out of
shyness as it were to show His small belly.
kaRShannamghriyuyugam munIndhramanasA sAkam vrajasthRIdhdhashA jambAlena
cha nIlanIlasuthanulomlAlakashrImukha:
ambAmbethi hi yAyudhIRya pivathi smAnkAvirUd: sthanam kivAthaNyatha sA

What kind of penance yielding this sort of result was done by that mother
(Yashoda) whose breast was sucked by Sri Krishna who, mounted on her lap,
was calling her 'mamma, mamma', who was dragging His feet along with the
minds of the sages who were meditating on those feet, who had a fine but
very black body on account of the mire (in which He swallowed), who had the
looks of the black eyes of the Gokula ladies cast on Him & who had a face
shining with waving curls of hair.

vairUpyam nijathejasAnirupamairangai: nirAkArathAm
nIchaikyam cha nirasya niRmalaThiyAm nithyARyA viTTalo
dhigminnAmabaradhikkriyARThamabhavadh dhigvasthrathAm dhIpayan [28]
Sri Krishna who confers His grace on the ignorant refuted (the charge of)
attributelessness by means of many kinds of qualities such as valour,
beauty, bliss,& others. He refuted (the charge of) the falsity of the
world by means of (bestowing) wealth on those who remembered Him. He
refuted (the charge of) colourlessness by means of His bright splendour.
He refuted (the charge of) formlessness by means of unequalled hands, feet
etc.. (with Himself) by means of His being worshipped by Brahma, Naradha &
others possessing pure intelect. He refuted the difference of the quarters
from the sky by displaying His
nakedness.
(N. B. 1. The advaitis say that god is nirguna, (beraft of all virtues).
Sri Krishna refuted that statement by virtue of giving prosperity of
various kinds to the people of Gokula by His presence there. He also
established His supremacy by refuting His vaigunyam (insignificance).
2. He refuted the statement of the advaitis that the universe is un real
(mithya) by giving riches to the people of Gokula. If these riches were
unreal, how could they be given? By these riches the people did not suffer
poverty & thereby He refuted that whatever is unreal vanishes or
disappears. An unreal thing has neither existence nor disappearance.
3. He refuted the advaita statement that god is neerupa (has no color or
attributes) by exhibiting His body's lustre & refuted His ugliness also by
his exquisite beauty.
4. He refuted the advaita statement that god is niravayava (has no limbs)
by His having hands, feet, etc
5. He refuted the advaita statement of jivaikya & the idea that god is one
among the ordinary men by His being always worshipped by such great souls
as Naradha & others who come there for worshipping Him.
6. He refuted the statement of the TArakikas that the sky is different from
the eight directions of east, etc., by His nakedness, ie., having the
directions for His cloth or sky. The word 'ambara' means both cloth & sky.

May that babe Krishna reside in my heart! that Krishna who was moving about
with the calves of the cows with his anklets jingling in the courtyard of
the herdswoman (Yashodha) & who was smeared with dust, whose glory was fit
to be seen from the sky by the gods in the company of their wives who had
no consciousness of their bodies by looking at His exquisite beauty & who
were praising Him.

May that child Krishna ever reside in my heart! His neck was adorned by the
fine claw of the tiger. He was a fire to the forest of the group of
jealous demons. He had the lustre of the pearl necklace in the neck, the
bright bracelets on the upper arms, bangles on the lower arms & anklets on
the feet. His smile brightened (lit up) the wide quarters.
navyaskhaladhdhachananandhithasaRvaloka: subhyakthakunvalathathi:
subhagAgragaNya:
dhimbastradhaRshithakati: dhinanAThadhIpthi: dhRudhga: sadhAsthu sa
shishaRdhrUdhayangamO me [31]
May that pleasing child Krishna ever reside in my heart. He pleased all
people by His new lispings, His group of curly hair was well set. He was
the foremost of all the beautiful things. His waist was visible on account
of His nakedness. His lustre was like that of the sun.
nArINAmapi mOkshadha: kimithi nO dhaDhya vishudhdhAthmanAmasmAkamthvithi
yOgopUgamanasAm kopam vidhunvanniva
gOpasthrInikarasya dhugdhajaladhim svam dhAthukAmo hari: thadhgehasThitha
dhugghamaNdalamaThO muShNamdhachAra braje [32]
Then with the intention of giving His own ocean of milk to the bevy of
gopis, He wandered about in Gokula stealing abundant milk in their homes,
as though to pacify the anger in the minds of the yogis who may ask: 'why
don't you give moksha to us with very pure hearts while you are giving it
to the passion ridden (love torn) women?'
harou payo muShNathi kvApi thuShtA dhaDhAr maRkAya dhadhathyamaRSham
thaThAhi thachCheShananyayogyam haranthamudhdhIkshya kaTham na manyu: [33]
While Sri Krishna was stealing milk, a certain woman was pleased but was
angry when He was giving it to a cat: It is proper. Why does not anger
arise on seeing the cat stealing the remnant of milk which is fit only for
Brahma & other gods (and not for a cat)?
(N. B. The woman was angry with the cat who took the sacred prasAdam of the
Lord but not with Sri Krishna. )
pragRuhya gaNtAmapareNa pAthram kareNa chAnyena paya: pibantham
nishAmya mithrANi cha thapaRyantham suvismithA kApi babhUba thUShNIm [34]
Holding the bell with one hand & the pot of milk with the other & drinking
milk with the third hand. He was giving milk to His friends with the
fourth hand. On seeing this a certain gopi was highly wonderstruck & kept
quiet.
karasThabhAsvannavanIthamanya vibhIShayanthyanvagamanmukundham
svamoulimAlAchyuthapuShpapunjai: padhAni thasyeshithuraRchayanthI [35]
Another gopi was frightening Sri Krishna having a ball of butter in His
hand followed Him. She seemed to worship the foot prints of the Lord of
the universe with heaps of flowers that fell from the garlands on her head.
adhikshipanthyAm sukRuthena sAkam dhadhInidhIra: sa chuchOra chOra:
agaNyapuNyAkhyadhanAni dhAno pradhAya sOchUchuradhAnathAyAm [36]
That bold thief Krishna stole the curd of the scolding gopi along with her
merit. That Krishna who was the supreme donor, stole the curd of a gopi &
gave her countless money of merit.
abhUdh yashOdhAthanayasya pRuThvyAm vinindhithA thaskarathApi bhUthyai
thaThAhi lakshmInayanAnthabhAjAm asadhyadhOShOpi bhavedhguNAya [37]
Even theft decried on this earth became the cause of prosperity to the son
of Yashodha (Krishna). It is proper. Even the unbearable vices will
become a virtue with those having the side glances of Lakshmi.
kvakIyachouRTha nitharAm gRuNadhbhayo dhadhou vimukthimkila gOpabAla:
aham svamaRmAlapathAm sa chakre phalena vAgbandhamithi prathaRke [38]
The body of Nandagopa gave moksha to those mentioning His theft completely.
I guess that He silenced thereby those who disclosed His vital defect ( as
one silences a person who discloses his secret by giving money.)
svabhakthapunjARjithapApavRundham dhivAnisham chOharathi sma bAla:
gRuhe gRuhe dhugdha masA vamuShNAth thaThA hi kaL thyakshyathi
sidhdhavidhAm [39]
That boy who used to steal day & night the heaps of sins earned by the band
of His devotees now stole the mild in each of the houses of the cowherds.
It is just so. Who will give up the art developed by him?
hastha: kim navanIthabhAjanamukhe nyastha: thvayA shrIpathe
dhRupthaprasthara sammithAthikaTinanAvasThAntharAyA gRuhe
yukthA na sThithi rasya komalahRudha: thanvIharachithe mama
prIthyAsThApayithum [ 40]
A Gopi: Oh, Lord of Lakshmi! Why did you put your hand in the mouth of the
pot of butter?
Sri Krishna: O, slender bodied, deer eyed one! It is not proper for this
butter with a tender inside to be in the house of a gopi like you with a
heart which is arrogant & very hard like a stone. I did so, in order to
put it with love in my tender heart.
So, saying, He laughed. May this Krishna protect us!
(N. B. From this verse we understand that Sri Krishna confers His grace on
the angry gopi & comforts her thereby, that He is kind as He confers His
grace even on the ignorant women & that by this means He conceals His theft
of butter.)

Gopi: Softness in the limb of one by whose lotus like foot the limbs of
Sakata were crushed does not stand to reason.
Sri Krishna: That hardness (which is found only in the foot but not in
their limbs) is due to contact with your big breasts when you mounted me
upon your chest in my childhood & made me dance.
May that Krishna give us maturity or perfection!
badhnAbhyadhya bhavanthamanga kithavam sAdhyam thatha: kim priye dhugDhAnAm
parirakshaNam kapatasannaDhdhyenivaDhyevayi
mugdhE thvam virasA sabujJasiparam svigdham na

Gopi: Dear Krishna, I will now bind you who are a cheat.
Krishna: My dear one, what can be achieved thereby?
Gopi: If you, equipped with deceit, are bound, milk will be saved.
Krishna: Oh! stupid, lotus eyed one! you who have no love will leave me but
that dear milk will not (leave me).
May that Krishna who subdued her by saying thus give me knowledge!
(N. B. Sri Krishna means that even if He is bound, milk will not be saved
for He may drink it by taking another form).
Thatha: kRuShNannUpurashobhipAdhA: sthriyo vidhagdhai: anumeyamadhvA:
shuchismithA: kuNlashobhigandA nyavedhayamsthancharithAni mAthu: [43]
Then all the gopis whose feet shine with jingling anklets, whose waists can
be guessed by the wise, whose smiles are delightful & whose cheeks shine
with earings reported all the deeds to His mother (Yashodha).
yadhAthmajasthe pivathi sma dhugdham vibhidha pAthrANi thadhA mamAsIth
na manyu: uthsaRpithadhIyadhanthadhRuganthakAnthi hadhi thaRkayanthyA: [44]
Oh, Yashodha, when your son broke the mild pots (with a stick), I was not
angry as I was absorbed in the lustre of His teeth & side looks which
pervaded into the milk pot.

svakRuthyasADhyAnyavalambya kamdam jighRujJnyathi svairamayam suthasthe [45]
Friend Yashodha, while this your son was stealing milk, He stole the hearts
of us who came to threaten Him & He wanted to have freely the milk that
cannot be had by His own effort with our neck as his support.
yadhIdhRusham kaRma karOShi kRuShNa na thaRhi nandhasya suthasthvamanya:
ithIrithe hantha hasan yashOdhe bahUnyaniShtAni sa n: thanOthi [46]
Oh Krishna, if you do such deeds as these then you are not the worthy son
of the worthy Nandagopa. You are another's. When thus Yashodha said, He
laughs (to mean that He is not his son) & does many more mischiefs (to
confirm it). It's a difficult job (to deal with Him).
idham hi dhevasya samaRpaRNAhamithIrithe thaRhi ahamEva dhEva:
sa ithThamAbhAShya thadheva bhumkthE na dhevi puthrasthava dhevabhamktha:

O, devi, when we tell Him that this (milk etc) is for being offered to God,
He says, 'If so, I am the god' He drinks it also. Your son is not a
devotee of God but He is the god himself.'
gRuhe gRuhEyam navanIthadhugdhadhadhIni saRvANi apahRuthya bhumkthE
thaThApi thRupthi na suthasthavaithi kimasya bhUthAni vasanthi kRukShou [48]
Oh Yashodha, whatever thing--butter, milk & curds-He eats them all by
stealing in every house. Even then He is not satisfied. Do spirits reside
in His belly?
na munchavathsAn thvamihethya badhDhAnithIrithe puShyapadhe yashOdhe
smithOllasadh vakramadhAth suthasthe svabhAva
ithyuktharamuktharamuktharajJnya: [49]
When we told Him, 'Coming to our house do not set free the calves that are
bound, 'O, meritorious Yashodha, your son who knows the answer replies with
His face brightened by smile that it was His nature (to do so).
(N. B. Really it is His nature to free souls bound in samsara.)
kasmAdhanga nayasi ulUsvalamitho dhugdhasya pAthrAdhaDha: snigdham
sThApayithum thathashcha kimithi prOkthe prabhuRyOgadhath
madhyasyAgrasujAthasusThithapaya: pAthrAnanasyOpamAm mugdhe vIjJnyayithum
thavethi sa paduRdhuShkaRmaNAm gUhane [50]
Gopi: Our darling Krishna, why do you carry the mortar from here?
Sri Krishna: To place the fine mortar beneath the milk pot.
Gopi: What is the purpose served thereby? Being thus asked, the capable
Krishna who was an expert in hiding His bad deeds replied thus: 'O. stupid
one, it is to show the similarity of the waist of your body with the pot
which has a broad face like you & milk inside it in the form of your gentle
smile.
kvachithkareNaiva sa dhugDhabhAjanam kvachincha pAdhena samIkShathe sakim
samAgathA: pashyathi pRuShtatha: thadhA sa vishvathaschakshurivAsthi
bAlaka: [51]
Oh friend Yashodha, that Krishna sees the milk pot with the hand at one
place & with the foot at another place. Then He looks back at the gopis
who have come. That boy Krishna seems to be one having eyes in all His limbs.

ulUsvale tham Thadhi banDhayamo nayeth thadholUsvalameva bAla:
Dhravam gRuhasthambhavare nibadhDho gRuhANyaso pAthayithum samaRtha: [51]
If we bind Him to the mortar, the boy would drag it away. When we bind Him
to the strong pillar, He is certainly capable of pulling down the very house.
(N.B. Here his future act of uprooting the trees is hinted at).
vishvaMbharasyAsya hi bandhanAya dAmAni sampAdhayinthu ka Esha:
badhDha: kaThanjiDhadhi thaRhi badhDhA madhye vilInA vayamEva nRutham [52]
Who is able to get the necessary ropes for binding this Krishna who bears
the entire universe? (None). If He is bound somehow, we alone will be
bound in His midst.
aho yashodhe thava bAlakOyam gRuhe gRuhEthyuShNamapIha dhugDham
pibanna thApam labhathe kadhApi kimasya vavathrE jalashashirAsthe [53]
Oh Yashodha, your boy drinks very hot milk in each & every house in Gokula,
His tongue was never burnt. It is wonderful. Is there an ocean in His mouth?
bilokya dhUrasThithadhugdhabhANdam ulUsvalADhai: yathathe gRuhIthum
shishu: sa thAvathkvaThidhedhathEho kimESha gUdAShtamahAvibhUthi: [54]
The child Krishna tries to seize the distant milk pot by means of mortar &
other things on seeing it. He grows in size in some places where there is
no one. It is wonderful. Does He have the eight great powers or siddhis
hidden in Him?
(N. B. The eight great powers are : animA, mahimA, garimA, laghimA,
prApthi, prAkAmya, isitva & Vasitva).
na niShdurA vAk samudhethi vakrAthkarashcha na: thAdayithum yashOdhe
vilOlanEthram thava puthrarathnam dhruvam suthasthe jagathAm niyanthA [55]
Oh,Yashodha, on seeing your gem of sons with rolling eyes out of fear as it
were, harsh words do not come of our lips nor can we raise our hands to
beat Him. Really your son is the controller of all the worlds.
bathAndhakArARpitha dhadhyamathramapi svabhAsvannayanAnthalakShmyA
nirOkShathe mOchanayO: kimeSha bibhaRthi bAla sthaba puShpavanthou

This, your boy sees the pot of curds even in darkness by the lustre of His
bright sidelooks. Does He have the sun & the moon in His eyes?
(N. B. The Shruthi says: suryA chandramasAvasya CaksUmsi).
manthrAthma sa kavAtamAshu vivRutham kaRthum samaRThom vRuThA bandham
nithyavimukthidho rachyithum vishvambharOyam jagath
vakre dhaRshayithum kaTOravachasAm vismApanam kaRhichidh baDhdha:
pAdayithum cha thadh vidapina: kim dhevi kuRmOm vayam

This, your son who is the god of hymns is able to open the closed door
quickly. He who is the giver of eternal moksha from the bondage of samsara
is able to nullify His binding made by us. He who bears the whole universe
is capable of showing in His mouth the wonderful universe is capable of
showing in His month the wonderful universe to us who use harsh words
against Him. If He is bound somehow, He will certainly uproot the very
knot. What then canwe do?

The gopis of Gokula having described Sri Krishna the emperor of all gods &
the cause of their moksa in future & seeing Him with with rolling eyes
slowly finished their words having many kinds of feelings & kept silent.
sadhA sadhAnandhasuthRupthavRuthe: bhavadhgRuhasThai: navanIthamukhyai:
samA mamaiShA mRudhithIva shamsanmRudham jaghAsa svavashOkhilesha: [60]
Once Sri Krishna who is the Independent one & the Lord of all ate the mud
as if to tell them: this mud is as good as the butter & other things in
your houses to me who am 'ever highly pleased with my unalloyed bliss.

Sri Krishna (Son of Vasudeva) who is worshipped in the three worlds & who
was charged with theft by the gopis in the presence of His mother ate the
mud to point out as it were that there was no theft in eating mud.
mRutham samAsvAdhya jaganthi mAthu: pradhaRshayAmAsa kilAsyadheshe
aham supAthre rasayA pradhakthA sahasraDhAsou phalithethi manye

Having eaten the mud, Sri Krishna showed the worlds to His mother in His
mouth. I think that the mud gifted by the earth to Krishna, the most
worthy recepient of gift, yielded a thousand fold fruit.

(In general)- When the exploits of the victorious Lord of Rukmini which
cause the happy horripilation of joy in the hearers, which remove the
multitudes of sins by their mere hearing, which give wonderful faultless &
praise worthy meanings & the four fold objects of human life (dharma,
artha, kama, moksha) to those who come over them with devotion, were
expounded by the good & eminent disputants like sukacharya & others (in the
BhAgavatha), the third creation of great joy was made in the assemblies of
gods.
In particular) When the exploits of the victorious Lord of Rukmini which
cause the happy horripilation of joy in the hearers, which remove the
multitudes of sins by their mere hearing, which give wonderful faultless &
praise- worthy meaning & the four fold objects of human lige (dharma, arth,
kAma & moksha) to those who come over them with devotion were composed by
the good & eminent Saint Sri VAdiraja, this third Canto which was
appreciated in the assemblies of gods, is over.
