Krishna after spending the night in love sport with the cowherdesses bid

farewell to them at dawn.

Once, Nanda was performing Durga worship in the DurgAvana. There came a

Vidhyaadhara named Sudarsana who had been reduced to the form of a serpent

due to the curse of Angirasas. He bit Nanda. Krishna kicked the sepent who

regained his Vidhyaaddhara form, bowed down to Sri Krishna with gratitude &

departed to his heavenly abode with delight.

One day, at night when Krishna was sporting with cowherdnesses, a demon

named Sankhacuda arrived there stealthily & was killed by Krishna. He

possessed a brilliant jewel which Krishna took & gave to Balarama.

Thereafter, another demon named Arishta came to attack Krishna in the form

of a bull & Krishna uprooted his horns & killed him using themselves only as

his weapon. Then there came another demon by name Kesin, in the form of a

horse & opened his mouth to devour Krishna who thrusted his arm into his

opened mouth & extracted out his life itself. Thus Kesin met his death.

At this stage, Narada met Kamsa & incited him to imprison Vasudeva: "O

Kamsa ! you must be considering Ugrasena to be your father. It is not true.

You are an illegitimate child. You happen to be the chief of demons whereas

Krishna is the lord of gods. The fact is, Krishna was born to your sister

Devaki, but your brother in law Vasudeva, being afraid of you, took him to

Nanda at Gokula." On hearing this account of Vasudeva's betrayal, Kamsa

became too irritated & desired to kill him. But Naarada prevented him with

the result that vAsudheva was imprisioned by Kamsa.

Then Naarada came to Krishna & reported Kamsa's atrocities with the request

to take suitable action to stop them.

After Narada took leave of Krishna there arrived at Gokula, Akrura with a

message from Kamsa to Krishna. Krishna heartily welcomed him & enquired

about the welfare of Vasudeva & others:

"Akrura, are you doing well there? Is my father living with pleasure &

delight? Are you preparing for eternal liberation? What are Kamsa's plan?

How should I act? Please tell me." Akrura replied. "Krishna! what is not

known to you? You know, Vasudeva is behind bars ! He is remembering alwaus

you alone. I, who am nearby you, need not worry about liberation, because

your vicinity itself is the supreme liberation ! O Lord ! why speak

anything more? By your sight itself, I have realized the knowledge of the

universe. Really that cruel Kamsa has acted friendly with me by sending me

as his messenger to you, because of which, I have this vision of your

beautiful form. Now please listen to the message.

Kamsa wants to harm you on the pretext of the bow festival. You attend it,

destroy him & please your devotees.

Krishna consented & started for Madhura's Kamsa's capital. The cowherdesses

tried to prevent Krishna from leaving Gokula. But Krishna pacified them &

accompanied Akrura in his chariot. On his way, Akrura went to river Yamuna

& became immensely pleased by seeing Krishna's lovely form in it.

On reaching the outskrits of Madhura, Krishna sent Akrura alone inside the

city. For Akrura, separation from Krishna was unbearable & so he prayed

Krishna to be his guest & make his abode his dwelling. But Krishna consoled

him by pacificatory words & Akrura had to enter the city alone.

ithTham sa rAthrou vividhAnvilAsAnkRuthvA nishAnthE visasaRja gOpI:

prIthyai vidhOranvayaja: svalIlAm mithram na sandhaRShayathi sma nUnam

Having thus made different kinds of sport (with the gopis), He left the

gopis at the end of night (+ in the early mornign. For the happiness of the

moon, Sri Krishna (who is born in the lunar race) did not reveal. His

sports to the sun. It is indeed true.

dhuRgAvanE vrathadharam nishi nandhagOpam saRpOgrasIthkila

vubhukShithachiththavRuthi:

sakalEshvaramanyadhaivaprathyaRhaNAbhirathamithyahamUhayAmi

A boa constrictor having in mind the desire of eating began to eat at night

Nandagopa who was observing the vow of fasting in the grove of Parvathi. It

began to eat Nandagopa who was worshipping another deity leaving out Sri

Krishna, the Supreme god. This is how I guess.

(N. B. Sudharsana, a gandharva, came to assume the form of a boa constrictor

on account of being cursed by the sage Angiras. The BhAghavatha narrates

(10-34) how a boa constictor began to eat Nandagopa who was asleep. On

hearing his shrieks, the cowherds came running & struck the serpent with

fire brands. But this did not at all affect the serpent. Then Sri Krishna,

the Lord of the saatvatas came & touched the serpent with His foot. The

serpent was at once absolved of all the sins & assumed a fine form. When

questioned by Sri Krishna about his previous life, the sepent (now a

Vidhyaadhara) said that he was formerly a Vidhyadhara known as Sudharshana

who was endowed with divine splendour & beauty. One day while ranging in

his ariel car, he saw the sages Angiras & jeered at their uglines.

Consequently, the sages cursed him to become a serpent.

Sri Krishna having lotus like eyes released this (serpent) Sudharshana (from

the curse of the sages by His kickling) who came to have a good sight on

seeing Him & who hailed from the family of the Vidhyaadharas who possess the

knowledge of Brahman. He also came to have a body purified by the contact

with the feet of that Krishna. He went to the place of Vishnu (Sky) as if

out of the love for the feet of the supreme Krishna.

asahyanaththacharanAshakathvam prakAshayansvAthmani vidhyamAnam

Sri Krishna showed His innate ability to kill the unbearable demons (who

prowl at nights) by killing like a tiger the demon Sankhachuda who came

disguised at night.

(N. B. The BhAghavata says (10-34-31) that Sri Krishna pursued Sankhachuda,

a servant of Kubera, & with a blow of His fist sundered off his head along

with the jewel.

shirOmaNim thasya vadhAdhavAptham balAya dhathvA bubhujE svayam sa:

yashOmaNim chandhrachayAthichArum manOjJnyakAnthAmaNibhi: samEtham

Sri Krishna gave BalarAma the jewel that was on the head of Sankhachuda

obtained by means of the slaying of Sankhachuda. He himself wore the jewel

of fame along with the captivating gopis who were more delightful than the

group of moons.

The demon Arishta (who was in the form of a bull) rendered dirty the sky

(the place of Vishnu)by raising rows of dust. He split with his tail the

clouds whose color was similar to the color of Krishna. He pestered

Devendra & the Earth as they were the cause for the incarnation of Vishnu by

his mountain of hump & club like hoof respectively. That demon Arishta came

(near Krishna) making the invicible Krishna a target to his horns.

The cruel demon Arishta (Vrsabha) jutting forward his two horns proceeded

against the imperishable Krishna who is plucking them out with His arms as

if to help Him with the desire of being relieved of the burden of his head.

aapi shirasi dhRuthO yathsvIya evAnthakAle karavashamupayAtha:

The pair of horns plucked out by Sri Krishna (lord of the yadus) with His

tender hands deprived the demon of his life the very same moment. This is

proper. For, what is borne on the head, though one's own, becomes one's own

enemy at the time of death by falling into the hands of the enemy.

N. B. It is seen in this world that a person, though belonging to us,

becomes our enemy at the time of our death or destruction by accepting money

(kara) at the hands (kara) of our enemy. Similarly, though the pair of

horns.

yathIyanAma smarathaam munInAmariShtamAthyamthikanAshamEthi

thadhEkanATham vrajamEthya jaiShtamariShtapuShiRna hi dhRuShtapURvA

By the remembrance of the name of Sri Krishna, the evils of the sages are

completely destroyed. The prosperity of (the demon), Arishta who came to

Gokula which has Sri Krishna as its sole lord & is therefore triamphant, has

not been seen before.

kRuShNasya praThamAna vIRyatharaNim dhRushvA sapathnyanganA:

chiththAkraanthamanOraThA: svanayanadhvaaraadhrudhArA dhadhu:

bhAvisvIyapayOdharadhvayamahAshuShkathvasamprApthayE

The wives of Sri Krishna's foes (such as cAnoora, Kamsa & others) seeing the

ever waxing sun in the form of the valour (of Sri Krishna) felt very unhappy

& had their hopes shattered. In order to make here after emaciated their

two big breasts full of milk in their chest, they emptied the milk in the

form of shedding tears.

mukundhamAjou prathiyAsyathO me na jIvithashA nanu vidhyathe shva:

ithIva nishchithya jagAma kEshI javEna nandhavrajamashvarUpI

To me who am marching against Sri Krishna (giver of Moksha, Mukundha) in the

battle, there is no hope of living tomorrow. As though deciding thus, the

demon Kesin went in the form of a (gigantic) horse quickly to Nandagokula.

sa visthRuthAsya: kila vishvamURthi grasiShNurabhyAgamadhagryakIRthim

adhO yadhORvashamaNi: svapANim pravEshayannIpsithamEva mEne

That demon Kesin confronted Sri Krishna who has eminent fame & the universe

as His body with his mouth wide open & with the desire of eating Him up.

Sri Krishna (jewel of the Yadu race) putting His hand (in the demon's mouth)

thought of the opening of the mouth (by the demon) as a desirable thing.

sa kEshidhaithyasya mukhE murAriRnivEshayAmaasa karam svakIyam

thadhIyahARdhAmbaramadhyasamsThamasum bahiShkaRthumivEhamAna:

That Krishna (foe of demon Mura) inserted His hand in the mouth of Kesinas

if with the desire of expelling the life breath that was in the middle part

of the region of the headof Kesin.

thadhvaiRya jarayan balam cha shamayannangam muhu: kappayan

akShebhyOpatuthAm dhishan dhRudatharAndhanthAnbalAthpAtayan

thachChavAsam skhalayan jaravE bahushasthadhyouvanam dhUrayan hasthOsou

vavRudhEntharamthakapurAthiThyam dhviSha: sUchayan

This hand weakened, like old age, the courageof that demon (Kesin). It

subdued his strength & repeatedly it shook his body. It incapacitated the

eyes & other organs. IT plucked out forcibly the teeth of Kesin. It

enfeebled his breath & relieved him greatly of his youth. Indicating to the

enemy the hospitality of Yama's town, it grew well (inside his mouth).

sa KRuShNAdhORdhandavarAbhivRudhdhayA khalAgragaNyO visasaRja kAyam

karOdhayAnvIkShya parasya jAthAnasUnasUyAbhirathAsthyajanthi

That Kesin, the foremost of the wicked ones, gave up his body (life) on

account of the growth of Sri Krishna's eminent arm (inside his mouth). On

seeing the increase in the wealth of others, people who are jealous give up

their lives.

aThO vipakSham sushalEna nindhan suraRShirabhyEthya shamshasam kamsam

pithA na sOyam thava bhOjarAjasthvamanga mAyAmayajArajAtha:

thvadhIya bhIthyAnakadhumdhubhistham ninAya mithrAlayamAlayAththe

(These three verses are to be read together as they form a unit of three

verses called Visesakam which is defined as a group of three stanzas forming

one grammatical sentence.

dhvAbhyAm yugmamithi prOththam thribhi: slOkaiRvishEShakam

kalApaka chathuRbhi: syAththadhUdhRvam kulakam smRutham)

After the death of Kesin, the divine Sage (Narada) approaching Kamsa reviled

the rank of foes skilfully & told him thus, 'O, dear Kamsa, the King

Ugrasena is not your father. You are born to a deceitful paramour (who put

on the guise of Ugrasena). Those who are your followers on the earth are

demons. This Krishna, the son of Vasudheva, is the highest of the gods.

All those who are on His side are gods. That Krishna was borne in the womb

by the wife of Vasudeva (Devaki). He was born in this your house. On

account of the fear from you Vasudeva carried Him from your house to the

house of his friend Nandagopa.

ithItithe shourivadhoudhyatham niShidhya vudhdhyA sa thu dhevayOgI

na vArayAmAsa thadhIyabandham matham mukundhasya thadhA vijAnan

It being said thus (by Narada), Kamsa was engaged in killing Vasudeva. The

divine Sage prevented cleverly that Kamsa who was engaged in the killing of

Vasudeva (son of Surasena). Having known the view of Mukundha at that time,

he did not prevent the bondage of Vasudeva.

(N. B. The sage Narada knew Sri Krishna's intention of killing Kamsa after

he committed the guilt of imprisoning Vasudeva).

Having thus made Kamsa guilty of this act, sage Narada approached Sri

Krishna. Sage Narada who is equal to Siva, the destroyer of Tripura, told

before Sri Krishna who punishes the wicked ones according to their guilt

that Kamsa had committed the guilt (of Imprisoning Vasudeva & Devaki).

thaThApi pURNasya na kRuthyamasthIthyasou bhaviShyathsakalam babhAShe

kRutham vidhAthu vachanam madhIyamapIha kARyANi kariShyathIthi

Even though there isnothing to do for Sri Krishna who is perfect in all

respects, this Narada, thinking, 'He will perform (all) deeds in this world

to render my words true', mentioned to Him all the future acts (of going to

Mathura, killing Kamsa & others).

Saying thus, Narada (son of Brahma, the lotus born) went away. Then was

seen Akroora (son of Svaphalka) who was sent by the foe (Kamsa) & who had

the sport of the happy young one of a deer which is caught & later on

voluntarily released by the lion & seen by its relations.

(N. B. Svaphhalka, the father of Akroora, was the son of Vrshni, a yadhava

king. His wife was Gaandini, daughter of the king of Kasi).

Akroora saw in Gokula Sri Krishna, his lord, who was in the act of milching

cows, who had the body of the complexion of a dark blue cloud & who was

engaged, as it were, in showing His ability to fulfil all the wishes of His

devotees.

nanAdha nAnAdhurithoughamaRdhayannanandha nandhasya thapa: phalOdhayam

Akroora saluted Sri Krishna, the Primeval Person. Being overwhelmed with

new joy caused by seeing Sri Krishna, he danced. He shouted destroying many

kinds of groups of sins (by uttering the name of the Lord). He was happy at

the fulfilment of the penance of Nandagopa).

thamAlilingE dhRudamachyutha: priyam sashankhamENAngashuchismithanana:

anAdhisidhdham bhavarUpabandhana thadhAshritham vishlaThayannivAnjasA

Sri Krishna (the Imperishable One) whose face had a smile white like the

moon embraced tight as if to loosen his rope of the bondage of worldly

existence clinging from the beginningless time that Akroora who was dear to

Him & who was (standing) with fear.

hIna mahInam maThithum ninIShumakhrUramakhrUrajanapriya: svayam

gIRvANagIRvANagaNAthidhUrO rakShObharakShObhakRudhithyavOchath

Sri Krishna is dear to the gentle (akroora) people. He is out of the reach

of the group of the words of the gods which are as fast as arrows. He is

the destroyer of the group of demons. He said this to Akroora who is

desirous of taking Him in order to kill the wicked Kamsa, the ruler of the

earth.

kShOma: kim thava na: pithiA cha kushalI

svAdhyAyathIRThApluthisvagRyArAdhana

mukhyashObhanakRuthi vidhnOjJithA vaRthathe

kim samsAravimukthayE prayathase kamsasya kA vAspRuhAsa thvam vEthsyakhilam

yadhadhya hi mayA kARyAm cha thajJApaya

Are you well? Is our father Vasudheva well? Are the auspicious deeds

beginning with the study of the Vedas, bathing in holy places, worship of

the gods & others going on uninterruptedly? Are you striving for the

liberation from worldly existence? What is Kamsa's wish? Such a one as

you know everything. What is the work to be done by me now?.... Remind me

of it.

kShEmasthAvadhanantha hathsarasijE yAvadhbhavAnvaRthathE svIyaklEshavanAnalE

thvayi sathi klEsha: kva pithrOsthava

kinthu thvathpithRuthApavAdhajanitham thachkshRunkhalAbandhanam

chinthAsanthathihEthureva na thayO: santhApakAri prabhO

O, immortal Krishna ! I am quite safe so long as you are present in my lotus

like heart. Whence can there be distress to your parents while you, the

sylvan fire of your devotees distresses are here. Yet the bondage of

fetters which is the result of the blame that he (Vasudheva) is your father

is a blessing in disguise for his uninterrupted meditation of yours & O,

Lord !, it will not be a sourse of suffering to both of them.

thIRTham sEvithamEva sathpadharajO juShtam surA: sathkRuthA

yEnAlingithavAnaham thava vapushchIRNA cha puNyakriyA

yallambhdham thava dhaRshanam parichithO vEdhashcha yaththE shrutham

kalyANam vachanam bhavOpi na bhavathsAmipyabhAjO mama

As I served the dust of your feet, holy places were served by me. As I

embraced your body, gods were worshipped by me. As I obtained your sight, I

have done deeds of merit. As I heard your auspicious words, the study of

the vedas is done by me. To me who am near you, there is no worldly

existence even.

kim viShNO bahunOdhithEna vidhitham vishvam bhavadhdhaRshanAchChathruRmithra

mabhUdhbhavOpi yadhaham kamsEna sapreShitha:

adhrAkSham thava sudharam vapurayam saRvajJnyachUdAmaNE prashnasthE

nRuvidambanAya mama cha prathyukthirIshOdhRushI

O, Lord Vishnu ! What's the use of saying much? Since I saw you the entire

universe is known. As I who was sent by Kamsa saw your beautiful body, evne

the enemy, namely the worldly existence has become my friend - O, the crest

jewel of those who know all ! This question of youe is only for imitating

the human beings (& not because you are ignorant). My answer also is of

this kind (And it is not based on the supposition that you are ignorant).

kamsa: samprathi kARmukOthsavakaThAvyAjena the vipriyam kaRthum vAnChathi

thEna mAthulamaham sARTham vidhAthum bhavAn

gathvA thathra vibhuRdhunOthu sabalam shathrum puna:

prasphuradhbhuchOpOthsavamArachayya bhajathAmAdhim samAdhipriya:

Kamsa now wishes to do what is highly dear to you (harm) under the pretext

of the festival of bow. therefore, you who are able go there to render

fruitful the bow festival of your maternal uncle. Kill the enemy Kamsa

along with his army. Again, you who have love for meditation remove the

mental affliction of your devotees by means of the knitting of your lustrous

eyebrows.

madhurAmadhurAkEshamahusA mahuthsAdhikA

sahusA sahu sA$$pyA svaiRbhavathA bhavathAraka

O, Krishna (who rescues the devotees from the worldly existence) ! that

Mathuraa which enhances joy by the lustre of the full moon of the chaitra

month) is fit to be obtained by you soon along with your relatives.

sa thatha: sathathadhyAnashudhdhavRudhdhajanAshrithAnAm

madhurAm madhurAm kaRthum gamanAyOpachakramE

Afterwards Sri Krishna began to go in order to make delightful that MathurA

which is resorted to by one people who are pure by their incessant

meditation of Sri Krishna.

On seeing Lord Sri Hari going to MathurA town, the women of Gokula cried

with many kinds of words with the idea of making Him return.

ramyAdharOShTasudhayAa rachithAthmavRuththIRna thyaththumaRhasi

navAmbudhanIlamURthE

thvathsangabhangakaraNOdhyathapApamanga shaknOthi hi kShapayithum thava

lOchanAntha:

O, Krishna having the body of the color of a dark blue new cloud! you are

not fit to leave us who live by means of the nectar of your beautiful, red

lower lip. Dear Krishna ! It is well known that your sidelook is capable of

destroying our sins or the sinful Kamsa who is ready to cause obstacle to

your company.

yiyAsum thvAm samAlOkya na: prANOpi yiyAsathi

yuvayOravinAbhAvamakShairIkShAmahEdhunA

On seeing you desirous of going, even our life breath wishes to go. We are

now seeing with our senses the inseparable connection of you & our life

breath.

kimu dhurithamakAri yEna kamsaprakatithakARmukasambhramE sharANAm

vidhirakRutha padham vivEkahInO mRudhulakalEvaramasmadhIyamAdhou

Why has the indiscriminate fate made first our tender bodies the target to

the arrows in the fesival of bow promulgated by Kamsa? What is the sin

comintted by us?

ahO vidhE thvadhvachasAthithRupthA yadhUdhvahAlinganalubhdhachiththA:

thadhIkShaNEnApi kaTham vihInA dhayAthidhUrAdhdhya karOShi dhInA:

O pitiless Brahma ! We were highly pleased with your words. We were highly

desirous of embracing Sri Krishna, the most eminent of the Yadhu's clan.

Why do you now deprive us of His sight & thereby make us depressed? It is

strange.

ayamapi cha virudhvanAmadhEyO nayathi vilApamupEkShya kAminInAm

priyasarasavilAsamagrayavESham kamaladhRusham kamanIyachAruhAsam

Disregarding the wailing gopis who are tormented by love, even this Akroora

(the gentle one) who has a name opposed to Kroora (the cruel one) is taking

away Sri Krishna who has a delightful smile, who has a pleasing & dear

sport, who has worn an eminent dress & who has lotus like eyes.

bhRuthyOyam kimu santhanOthu sa param prathyaRThibhtha: sathAm

What will this Akroora, the servant of Kamsa, do? But that Kamsa is the foe

of the good people. Let that Kamsa's bow festival be ruined. Let this bow

be also broken. May the all prevading god Krishna kill that arrogant Kamsa

who separates from us that Krishna (Lord of Lakshmi) who is equal to our

life breath & who has a gently smiling face.

O, foe of (demon) Mura ! O, one who has conquered the group of Vedas (equal

one who cannot be known fully even by the VedAnthis) ! if you want to go

from here to the capital Mathura, go. May the auspicious prosperity attend

on you there. O, pleasing one ! Combine soon the prefix aa that gives us

happiness to that verb yAhi (= go). O, one who is an expert in combining

the impossible ones! If not, cause our birth (upasaRge) near you (since

death os preferable to separation from you).

N. B. yAhi means go; aayAhi- go & come back.

Brahmaa (the lotus born) who gives happiness to his people fulfills the

desire of Akroora who wishes to take away our dear Sri Krishna (to Mathura).

That Akroora in whom there is the aavesha of Brahmaa desires to catch hold

of the lotus like feet of Sri Krishna (husband of Lakshmi devi).

Thus Sri Krishna pleased with His nectar like & friendly words those gopis

who were shuddering due to the fear caused by separation (from Him), & who

therefore had emaciated limbs, whose bangles & Pearl necklaces had slipped &

whose motionless posture was fit to be drawn in painting, He journeyed

looking at them many times with compassion.

Sri Krishna & the gopis had done such acts as the mutual touching of the

feet, catching hold of hands, embracing the most dear limbs of the body,

catching hold of the hair, looking at one another, throwing down one

another on the ground & sitting upon one another & fighting with fists. Sri

Krishna had pressed during love sport the gopis breasts which were like the

head of the elephant. Thus, He had acquired the art of the duellists & the

method of suppressing the elephants. How can that Lord Krishna leave the

gopis who were the cause of His sport?

Sri Krishna, son of Vasudheva, though bound with the rope known as the love

of the gopis, went to Mathuraa with the idea of conquering the foes. A

soldier who wishes to conquer the enemies (in the battle). though prevented,

will not turn back.

The ladies of Gokula followed all around that lover Krishna who was going at

a distance in a chariot in their chariot known as the mind having two horses

in the form of eyes, rope in the form of firm devotion & charioteer in the

form of pure intellect.

This Akroora, son of Svaphalka, while taking Lord Sri Krishna, the son of

Nandagopa, saw in the middle of the water of the Yamunaa (where he got down

for bathing) the wonderful, divine form of Sri Krishna Himself. It was the

fruit of his service as his charioteer. IT cannot be seen by others.

Akroora (son of Svaphalka) saw in the waters (of the Yamuna) the charming

form of Sri Krishna who is fit to be known by those who live in holy places,

whose minds are devoted to pure knowledge, who keep away at a distance even

the king who is a descendent of the ancestral family & who is a foe to the

followers of Sri Krishna, who have a highly peaceful mind & who wander in

(holy) places of pilgrimage.

He, Akroora alone is verily a devotee who observed dailly duties like the

noon tide bath & the sandhyA which are ordained in the vedas even though he

had got Sri Krishna in his hands. In this world, that Karma of aghamarasana

bath alone is the destroyer of all sins. That pool called Brahmahrada in

the YamunA river is alone the holy pool. For doing a signal service to

both - the Karma & the holy water even once, Lord Krishan who is the foe of

demon Mura & who is liable for being controlled by sevitude showed Akroora

His visible form.

(Verses 50 to 69 are to be read together as they form an antyakulaka. The

verb aikShath (saw) is found in the sixty nine verse).

Akroora saw (in the water) Sri Krishna who has the lustre of the quarters

which have the lustre of a thousand suns & who has feet which are like (the

just rising) red sun fit to be prayed to by goddess Lakshmi wiht her soft

lotus like hands.

The sole of Sri Krishna's feet worthy of being seen was shining with the

lines of a thunderbolt, goad, flag & lotus. The fingers of the feet were

shining like a cleft coral.

Sri Krishna's feet had the rows of fingers whose lustre was similar to that

of a full moon & which were free from defects. They were shining with new

anklets studded with superior gems.

He saw the all prevading Sri Krishna whose round shanks (calves of the leg)

were in contact with (= being pressed by) the lotus like hands of goddess

Lakshmi. His two eminent knees were shining like a mirror of gem.

He saw the eternal Krishna whose thighs were similar to the tender, round &

lustrous pillar like stems of a plantain tree. His two delightful waists

were like the shining head of the young one of an elephant.

He saw Sri Krishna who had worn a silken garment which was more delightful

than the many rising suns. He had the lustre of a golden belt (round the

waist) which was shining with different kinds of gems.

On the small belly of Sri Krishna, which is the support of all the worlds

there are three folds. It has a lake in the form of a navel that shines

with lotus which has the lustre of a bee in the form of Brahma.

He saw Sri Krishna who had an ornament (called VudidAra what we call in

Kannada) round His belly which shines with the good lustre of a sprout in

the form of three folds. He had a lean waist. His broad chest was smeared

with sandle paste.

His two robust sides were embraced by goddess Lakshmi & the goddess of

Earth. He is the most eminent of the eminent ones. His body was smeared

with the saffron that was on the chest of Sri Krishna sitting on His thigh.

His chest had the Srivathsa mark on it. He was decorated by the eminent

sylvan garland. He had the ornament of the eminent & excellent Kausthubha

gem which was equal to the shinning moon.

Sri Krishna had worn on His lotus like hands bracelet of gems, bangles &

rings & they had the marks of conch, discus, mace & lotus.

Sri Krishna had worn a shining neck ornament having three lines similar to

those of a couch. He had a lotus like smiling face filled with countless

His lip was similar to a highly red, soft, delightful & ripe bimba fruit.

He has a row of (white) teeth which shine like jasmine buds. He is a

He was delightful with the gentle smile that competed with the wealth

(lustre) of moonlight. His cheek shone like a wall studded with blue gems.

He was decorated by the excellent ear ornament which was similar to the just

risen sun. His shining nose robbed the just bloomed campaka of its beauty.

His eyes were similar to the lotus having hovering bees around it. His

brows had conquered the loveliness of the sAranga bow (that is made out of a

blue coloured horn).

Sri Krishna's bee of unsteady sidelook was interested in the lotus like

faces of goddess Lakshmi & goddess Earth. He shone with the tilak of gem in

the centre of the upward like on His forehead.

He had a wonderful sun in the form of a lustrous diadem that was connected

with the hanging ringlets. He shone with the invaluable pearl necklace,

armlet, anklets & others.

Sri Achyutha's form was an abode of the beauty of crores of cupids. He had

a pure seat of lotus inside the golden mantap.

He was being praised by the groups of gods headed by Brahma & others & by

the contented sages (such as Narada & others). He had removed the sins of

His devotees resorting to Him by His look of kindness.

Akroora saw such Sri Krishna who is the main cause of maintenance,

destruction, creation, liberation & others of the world. Sri Krishna was

shining with the umbrella of gems in the form of the white hoods of (the

serpent) Sesa.

to the Srimad Bhaghavatha 10-39 chapter, verses 44-55

Having seen (in the water) Sri Krishna who had eyes like the petals of a

lotus, the completely satisfied Akroora praised Him. Afterwards, he saw Him

who was seated in the chariot. Even a liberated jiva does not give up the

service of Sri Krishna.

That river YamunA which is most dear to the ascetics & which reveals Sri

Krishna by their mere bathing (in it) is victorious (= most eminent).

Afterwards having neared Mathura, Sri Krishna who was outside the town told

the son of Gaandini (Akroora) thus: 'You go to the town first'.

This Akroora whose mind has dispassion caused by the fear of the separation

from the company of Sri Krishna & who therefore has no liking for house,

sons & wife tells Maadhava (husband of Lakshmi) !

O Krishna! We are tormented by the waves beginning with birth, death, old

age & others in this worthless sea of worldly existence. To such as us do

the burdens beginning wiht wives, houses & others which are tied with the

rope of love cause happiness? Therefore, give us always the boat in the

form of your foot which has the line of standard, which delightful, which is

fit to be obtained by the ascetics & which causes the destruction of the

affliction which will occur from the sea of worldly existence.

Probably to a great extent the curse given by the women of Gokula (as I was

separating you from them) must have affected me. For which reason, you who

have a body full of the sea of beauty are (now) being separated from me.

Which person can obtain the good without merit?

O, Mukundha! though I am very far from the group of merits, make me dumb in

censuring the virtuous people; blind in eyeing fair ladies having fish like

eyes; deaf in hearing speeches unconnected with you in assemblies; lame in

journeying to do sins (such as going to the houses of other's wives); a

cripple in doing sinful acts; a eunuch in vulgar sexual pleasures &

senseless in the remembrance of these prohibited (above mentioned) matters.

O, one who admits the ignoramus (Vittala) ! may the desire to worship your

pair of Feet arise in me (as in the case of a passionate man who loves the

women); greed to obtain more pure knowledge about your supremacy, etc, (as

in the case of a greedy man who desires to have & protect more & more

wealth); jealousy in earning aspicious merits (by means of your worship, etc

to a greater extent than others even as a jealous person strives hard to

acquire more money than others); intoxication after drinking the nectar of

the narration of your stories (which causes disinterest in other things even

as an intoxicated person is engaged in dancing etc being oblivious to other

things); anger towards your enemies (so that they may be defeated by me by

means of strength or intellect even as an angry man goes to kill his foes) &

love for your devotees (to a treater extent than a person has for his

relatives). In matters other than the above let not the desire arise. For,

these foes (desire etc) will not be the enemies of one who is dependent on

the Lord. In the case of others, who are not dependent on the Lord, they

will be enemies).

Oh, Rudra ! you are the well known presiding deity of the mind. So, don't

make it the friend of cupid (passion), your foe but interested in meditating

on, and worshipping (your grandfather)Lord Narayana. O, Sun! you are the

presiding deity of the eyes. Make them feast on the body only of Lord

Vittala (who is dwelling in your orb). Don't make them the followers of the

ladies with blue lotus like eyes. For, the blue lotus is your enemy & they

are keeping it in their eyes & are protecting it.

O, the Lord of the World, Vittala ! let my lifetime pass in the embrace day

& night of the lady named Vairaagya (absence of all desires), which I have

got from my father in law, a virtuous man. She has the ends of the quarters

for her cloak. She is decorated with jewels such as meditation, pure

knowledge & others even in death. She has a male babe known as Moksha

(salvation). Don't do otherwise. For, cupid or mental worries will take

hold of me. In short, I shall be an ideal ascetic throughout.

In this name of Vittala, the first two letters " vi " & " TTa " are the

flawless betel leaf & chunam respectively. The other letter " la " is

the arecanut. The meditation of the various virtues of Vittala is the

superior camphor which is needed while chewing betel. This name of betel is

praised by the ascetics but is an enemy to cupid. For, it destroys the red

color (rAga) by betel chewing, that is, the lust (rAga) for enjoying

pleasures very often. When such a betel is chewed by one, how can one have

disease of the cycle of births & deaths. This is a wonderful betel got free

by us.

(N. B. Verses 80 to 81 contain a fitting relpy to those who argue that

ascetics cannot have the enjoyment of women & that they cannot chew betel.)

O Krishna, only that is the good mind which acts like the bee at your lotus

like feet. I think that any other mind is like the serpent wandering (for

food) brings about its own destruction.

Sri Krishna sent away Akroora who was saying thus after consoling him by

sweet utterances. Even he (Akroora), being desirous of carrying out the

Lord's order (and not out of love for his house) went home.

the happy horripilation of joy in the hearers, which remove the multitudes

praiseworthy meanings & the four fold objects of human life (dharma, artha,

kAma, moksha) to those who con over them with devotion, were expounded by

the good & eminent disputants like Sukacharya & others (in the BhAgavatha)

the tenth creation of great joy honoured in the assemblies of the gods was

made.

Particular: When the exploits of the victorious Lord of Rukmini which cause

the happy horripilation of joy in the hearers, which remove the multitudes

of sins by their mere hearing, which give wonderful, faultless &

praiseworthy meanings & the four fold objects of human life (such as dharma,

artha, kama, moksha) to those who conover them with devotion, were composed

on earth by the good & eminent Saint Vaadiraaja, the tenth canto of joy

honoured in the assemblies of the gods is over.
