I teach this class in MyOpenMath, a free course management system. Student must enroll in MOM by noon the first day of class. I DO NOT USE BLACKBOARD or CANVAS. It is in MOM that you have access to announcements, instructions, schedule, HW and Test links and deadlines. You submit online HW in MOM. I provide some practice tests, Beginning Algebra Review, Packet Info (written HW you do but do not submit), test info/dates/policies, forums, etc. Like a class on campus, come to class by logging in to MyOpenMath daily to read info, do online HW, etc. I begin teaching the class the first day of the semester and you must be active in MyOpenMath to be considered attending class. Make sure your email in MyOpenMath is correct and check it often. I often copy/paste emails into the announcement page so check that in case you miss an email.
YOU MUST ATTEND THE FIRST DAY OF CLASS OR MAY BE DROPPED.
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS BELOW TO REMAIN ENROLLED.
1. Enroll in MOM using Course ID above by noon, 6/19/17. See directions below for enrolling. Emailing me is not evidence of participating in class.
2. Open and read all info in the light green folder that starts: READ FIRST.
3. Open the yellow Online HW folder, and click on H0 to do the first online assignment, which is a quick, simple intro to the class. You will not be able to do any other online assignment until you do this. Complete this by 5 pm or you may be dropped. I also suggest you do the Short Useful Tutorial, and read the link How to Enter & Submit Answers as well as the link to how HW, Review Mode, and Late Passes work.
4. Start following the Schedule for the class. Transcribe videos for 1.1-1.4, do problems in Unit Packet for 1.1-1.4, and then open and complete the online HW assignment called H1 no later than Wed, 6/21.
FOLLOW THESE DEADLINES TO STAY ENROLLED--Enroll in MyOpenMath and complete H0 by 6/19, and H1 by 6/21.
STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT ANSWERS TO EACH ONLINE HW BY THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE, OR MAY BE DROPPED. A minimum of a few answers for each HW must be done on time. If you need more time to finish it, THEN use a late pass. Clicking a late pass does not count as attendance.
1. If you have a MyOpenMath account, log in. If not, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. Enter the SAME LAST NAME listed for you on SURF, the SAME FIRST NAME listed for you on SURF. If you go by a different name, please put that in parentheses next to your official SURF first name. So if your first name in SURF is listed as Jennifer and you go by Jen or JR or Sky (or whatever), enter your first name this way: Jennifer (Jen) or Jennifer (JR) or Jennifer (Sky), etc.
2. Click Enroll in New Class and enter the Course ID at the top of the page. You must also enter your enrollment key, which is the section you are enrolled in. It is a 4 digit number. Log in to SURF and find out what section you are enrolled in, and use that number. I emailed this info to all enrolled students. If you are not officially enrolled (for instance, on a wait list), you need to ask me for a special section number.
Summer Students: SET ASIDE 8 HOURS A DAY FOR THIS CLASS IF YOU PLAN TO WORK ON IT 4 DAYS A WEEK, OR ABOUT 5 HOURS A DAY IF YOU PLAN TO WORK ON IT 6-7 DAYS A WEEK. The State of California accreditation standard requires that 1 unit of Academic Credit represents a minimum of 48 total hours of student work. For a 4 unit class meeting 16-17 weeks, that represents 12 hours a week. For a 4 unit summer class meeting 6 weeks, that represents 32 hours a week. Be prepared to devote that much time if you take one of my classes. More info can be found (see page 10) by clicking this link. Online courses can be convenient for those with hectic schedules, but they are NOT self-paced, and you need to find that much time each week to completing the work on time. You can work ahead if assignments are available. Assignments are due often. This class requires self-discipline, good time management skills and a pro-active attitude. Online courses can be more difficult and time-consuming for some. Map out the number of hours a week stated above, spreading it out over the week. Treat those hours like a job: you must show up. Make a commitment to put forward your best effort. For most students, the time commitment required to pass this class is as stated above, and includes watching/transcribing videos, reading, completing problems in the packets and online HW, practicing, reviewing, etc. However, I do NOT assign grades based on time you put in or on your effort. Your grade is mainly based on how well you demonstrate your full understanding of the material through tests. You need to pass the tests.
This class is HYBRID, not completely online. Students are required to make appointments to take proctored tests in person. More info is in Test Info in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests.
Professor: Julie Harland--Email: jharland@miracosta.edu
Feel free to call me Julie, Mrs. Harland, Ms. Harland, Ms. Julie, or Professor Harland. To reach me, email me. Each time, sign your email with your first and last name, and a phone number with times you may be reached if you want to speak in person or on the phone.
I am committed to having regular contact with you via emails/announcements. I monitor attendance--see attendance policy. Email me if you have questions, or want to discuss something personal. IF YOU EMAIL me asking a question, I WILL USUALLY GET BACK TO YOU WITHIN 48 HOURS Mon-Fri, and usually much quicker than that. If I don't get back to you within 48 hours M-F, I didn't get the email. In that case, email me again. If I email you a question, please respond within 48 hours--sooner is better. CHECK EMAIL and ANNOUNCEMENTS/MESSAGES/FORUMS in MOM daily to make sure you do not miss important info! Make sure you are receiving my emails.
Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
Calculator: You will need a basic or scientific calculator for this class. Calculators may be used on proctored tests. Most homework should be done without a calculator. Only use when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what you may use in the Academic Proctoring Center on tests. On proctored tests, you may ONLY use a calculator provided by the APC. Use of cell phones as calculators is not allowed.
Attendance Policies: Attendance is monitored by your verified participation in class each week in the following ways. You may be dropped WITHOUT NOTICE if you do not follow the requirements below. Contact me any time you are unable to fulfill these policies.
1. Log in to our MOM class at least every 1-2 days to read announcements, open and submit answers in the online HW (unless you are ahead) and check for forum posts or messages. You must submit some answers to each online HW assignment by the due date(s) for each one to be considered attending class. Logging in without submitting answers, using a late pass, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward this requirement. You should spend at least 10 hours each week actively working in MOM (daily or at least every other day--it's daily on campus) unless you complete HW before the due date.
2) Show up and take tests during your scheduled appointment time. Be on time with your valid photo I.D. If you do not take a proctored test by its deadline, you may be dropped unless I am notified within a day of the deadline.
TESTS: There are three unit tests and a comprehensive final that you must take proctored in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC) on campus. Choose computer exam. The dates you may take each test, as well as all info regarding appointments is in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests.
Schedule and Assignments: There are four units. The schedule, directions, links, notes, and online HW assignments (shows due dates) are in MOM. There are about 13 regular online HW assignments, and each is worth the same amount toward your online HW grade. If you transcribe videos and do the packet problems first, you should be ready to do the online HW assignment. If you need more time to complete an online HW assignment, redeem a late pass within the late pass period.
Studying: Completing your homework is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule several hours a week for working on this class. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older videos and HW problems to make sure you remember the concepts and can work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 500 points total. No extra credit.
Online HW: 100 pt (Overall percent earned on online HW--approximately the average you earn on the 13 math online HW assignments)
Unit Test 1,2,3: 300 pt (100 points each, based on percent earned on each test)
Cumulative Final mainly over Unit 4: 100 pt (percent earned on final exam)
There are no make-up tests. If you miss a test, you earn a zero on it. If you miss a test due to an emergency (or any reason) or do better on the final exam than your lowest test score, I replace the lowest test score with your grade on the final exam. The final exam is required and may not be replaced. If your final exam score is lower than your test scores, nothing will be replaced. Contact me within 24 hours of the deadline if you miss a test. Nothing replaces the final exam grade, and it is required to pass the class.
Grades are calculated using the following scale with the extra stipulation that you must also earn at least 50% on the final exam to pass the class with a C or better. HW helps, but your grade is based mainly on your ability to recall and be able to work problems correctly on the proctored test.
To figure out your grade in the class, do the following. Use these variables to represent total percent earned on each component:
H: Homework; T1: Test 1 percent; T2: Test 2 percent; T3: Test 3 percent; F: Final Exam Percent
Add H + T1 + T2 + T3 + F + F and then subtract your lowest percent from T1, T2, T3, F.
Minimum points to earn a particular grade: A: 450 B: 400 C: 350 D: 300
Example 1: Someone has these scores: H: 90; T1: 84; T2: 50; T3: 76; F: 70
Since 50 is the lowest test score, subtract 50 from 90+84+50+76+70+70: 390 (That's a C.)
Example 2: Someone has these scores: H: 90; T1: 84; T2: 80; T3: 76; F: 70
Since 70 is the lowest test score, subtract 70 from 90+84+80+76+70+70: 400 (That's a B.)
