9/1/16
Happy September! READ ALL OF THIS! It is a general announcement to everyone in the class. (Note: If you want to drop, do it by the deadline this Friday.) I am leaving town and will be back in touch after the Labor Day holiday. HW 1-6 should be completed by this Friday. Use a late pass on any HW if you need more time. You have plenty of late passes and will not run out. Due to the holiday weekend and my being out of town, you may use up to 2 late passes for HW 5 & 6.
Please open the folder stating: OPEN THIS! Test Dates... It is time to schedule your first test. You may schedule all of your tests for the semester right now. The earlier you log in (or call or drop by the APC) to set your appt date, the more likely you will be able to get the appointment date/time/campus you want. Make sure you write down your appt times and remember to show up a little early to each appt. After you schedule each appt, which should be done AT LEAST 2 weeks before your appt time, open the HW in that folder where you must state the campus/date/day/time of your appt. I grade these by hand so you'll have 0 points until about a week after the due date for each of these. You may not use a late pass for these. You only get credit if you schedule your appt and complete each HW by the original due date. The due date to do HW T1 Appt. is 9/13/16, but I suggest you do it now. Read all info in the TEST INFO link so you are well informed about all details regarding tests.
Starting next week, there are usually only two HW assignments due each week. You should be setting aside at least 12 hours a week to this class, and logging in and working on it daily for 2-3 hours is the best way to approach it. That means you should be reading all of my emails and announcements, and setting aside 5-6 hours for each HW assignment. That includes watching/transcribing ALL the videos shown in each HW assignment when you open it, uploading the notes required in the beginning of each assignment, redoing and studying the examples on the videos, and then completing the HW problems. Some people accomplish this in less time, but you should schedule that amount of time in case you need it. Some students need to put in more than 12 hours a week. Everyone is different, but most students who do put in 12 hours every week, ask questions as needed, get help in the MLC or tutoring or from me or from other online videos as needed, and keep up will do well in this course. If that's your priority, you will probably do fine. The main reason students drop or do not pass is because they are not prepared for this class, or do not have the time in their schedule to do what is needed to keep up. It's like anything you want to get good at: put in the hours and you'll get good at it. And believe me, when you DO put in the time and get good at it, math is totally cool, fun, and awesome! So do your best given your own constraints and priorities. I'd really, really, really love it if everyone aced this class!!!! Go for it!! I'm here and rooting for you. Remember: You are always welcome to see me in office hours, or make an appt to meet me.
Have a great weekend.
9/5/16
Review HW 1-6 is due 9/6. Use a Late Pass for any HW you don't complete by the due date. Starting this week, any problems done after the due date earn half credit. You still get full credit for problems in the assignment completed by the due date.
If you haven't done this yet, make an appt to take Test 1 in the APC 9/20-9/24, and then complete HW T1 Appt. There is no late pass for this HW assignment. Make sure you do it by 9/13. (You can make all your test appointments for the whole semester.)
Purchase or Print Graphing Packet (GP). Watch the videos and complete the pages in the GP according to the schedule below. The Graphing Packet must be turned in, so do all of it. The part of Test 1 covering graphing will be more focused on problems on the videos and in the GP than the online HW, which is not comprehensive. You need to do both. Please read all info about the GP in Mod 1 to be informed.
Watch/transcribe Videos G1-G12 and complete pages 1-27 in GP by 9/8. HW 7 is due 9/8.
Watch/transcribe Videos G13-G17 and complete pages 28-42 in GP by 9/12. HW 8 is due 9/12.
Watch/transcribe Videos G18-G24 and complete pages 43-57 in GP by 9/15. HW 9 is due 9/15.
Complete Review HW 7-9 by 9/19.
Have a great week. Remember: I am here for you if you need help!
9/8/16
I'm sending this clarification about the Graphing Packet. It is required that you purchase or print it, and turn it in for Homework points. First watch/transcribe the video(s) listed for each or the 19 parts, and then do the page(s) for that part. Complete HW 7 (due today) after you've done this for pages 1-27. Use a late pass if needed. I have listed the import info below (especially see the exact schedule of which videos to watch in order and what pages to complete) that is also in Mod 1 under OPEN for MOD 1 INFO including Schedule, Graphing Packet, etc. and then you will see Buy Graphing Packet or Click Here to print PDF. READ ALL INFO and exact schedule below.
I COLLECT AND GRADE THE GRAPHING PACKET AS PART OF YOUR HW. Complete all pages in the graphing packet. By the deadline to take Test 1 (9/24), bring and turn in your entire Graphing Packet to either the Admin Bldg at San Elijo, or to the 3600 building at Oceanside--there is a night slot at the OCN campus if the door is locked so you can do this 24/7. I suggest you turn it BEFORE going to the APC to take your test. Students printing it from the PDF must bind the pages in order, preferably with a professional stapler (MLC has one), or put in a flat portfolio folder, or use a binder clip. DO NOT USE a big 3-ring binder. Since the online HW is not comprehensive, make sure you do all problems on the videos and in the packet to be prepared for the test, as most problems are similar to what is on the videos and in the packet. REMEMBER TO BRING IT TO CAMPUS WHEN YOU COME TO TAKE TEST 1. If you forget, turn it in no later than noon on Monday, 9/26. Click Here
assigned for each part of the packet, trying all problems on your own, BEFORE doing the problems in that section of the packet, and BEFORE doing the online HW assignments associated with those videos.
I've broken down the work in small chunks so you can watch and learn one small concept at a time (1 or 2 videos, so 10-20 minutes), and then try a few problems in the packet. Although you can watch all the videos at once (which is what it would be like if I was lecturing in class) and then do all the pages in the packet, I suggest you do the work in order as shown below. You should start transcribing the videos and completing the pages in the packet a few days before each due date shown, which is when each online HW assessment is due. You will need to upload the first page of several video notes in each associated online HW assignment.
Below is the work due Thursday, 9/8, and how to do it in the correct order.
Watch and Transcribe Video G1. Then do page 1.
Watch and Transcribe Video G2. Then do pages 2-3.
Watch and Transcribe Video G3. Then do pages 4-6.
Watch and Transcribe Video G4. Then do pages 7-8.
Watch and Transcribe Video G5. Then do pages 9-10.
Watch and Transcribe Video G6. Then do pages 11-12.
Watch and Transcribe Video G7. Then do pages 13-15.
Watch and Transcribe Video G8. Then do pages 16-17.
Watch and Transcribe Video G9-G10. Then do pages 18-19.
Watch and Transcribe Video G11-G12. Then do pages 20-27.
Complete online HW 7 by Thursday, 9/8, or use a late pass.
Below is the work due Monday, 9/12, and how to do it in the correct order.
Watch and Transcribe Video G13. Then do pages 28-31.
Watch and Transcribe Video G14. Then do pages 32-33.
Watch and Transcribe Video G15. Then do pages 34-36.
Watch and Transcribe Video G16. Then do pages 37-38.
Watch and Transcribe Video G17. Then do pages 39-42.
Complete online HW 8 by Monday, 9/12, or use a late pass.
Below is the work due Thursday, 9/15, and how to do it in the correct order.
Watch and Transcribe Video G18-G20. Then do pages 43-49.
Watch and Transcribe Video G21, G22, and G22.5. Then do pages 50-55.
Watch and Transcribe Video G23-G24. Then do pages 56-57.
Complete online HW 9 by Thursday, 9/15, or use a late pass.
Complete Review HW 7-9 by 9/19.
9/20-9/24: Take Test 1 in Academic Proctoring Center. Get there early for appt. Read Test Info. Bring approved photo I.D. Bring Graphing Packet to the Admin Bldg at San Elijo, or to the 3600 building at Oceanside before (preferably before you take your test), or no later than noon on 9/26 if you forget to drop it off on your test day. There are night slots so you can drop it off 24/7.

If you did not finish HW 7, use a Late Pass. It was due last Thursday. HW 8 is due Monday, HW T1 Appt is due Tuesday, and HW 9 is due Thursday. It is also time to start reviewing and preparing to take Test 1. Review video notes, open HW that is in review mode and retry problems, etc.
If you have not made an appointment to take Test 1 (possible test dates are 9/20-9/24), please open the green Test Info folder. All the info and the link to make your appointment is there. If you have trouble doing it online, call or email them or stop by the APC, and they will help you. I cannot help you with appointments. Everything is done through the APC
Any of the following ways may be used to schedule an appt:
Click this link to schedule it online: http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/proctoringcenter/scheduleyourappointment.html
and scroll to bottom. Click the campus where you want to take the test.
Call them at 760-757-2121 ext. 6471
for OCN or ext 7752 for SEC)
Stop by (room 3333 at Oceanside, or room 101 at San Elijo)
Email them at proctoringcenter@miracosta.edu
After you make an appointment, then open up HW T1 appt and fill in the info. YOU MUST DO THIS BY THIS TUESDAY, 9/13, TO GET CREDIT FOR MAKING YOUR APPOINTMENT.
You are also encouraged to make appointments for Tests 2, 3, and the Final, and fill in those HW assignments right now. Don't forget to write your appointment dates on your calendar, and to show up a little early for your appointment. Bring a photo ID.
If you need help, ask! It's most helpful if you use the HW forum and provide your steps and ask specific questions. Also, please read the forums. Often I am asked the same question, so if you read you might find your answer more quickly.
Have an awesome week, and keep drawing those lines!

Read through this, and especially click the links at bottom of email if you haven't done so this semester, or a need a review of class info/policies.
I have graded all the video notes posted through HW 7. I generally wait until the late period ends before grading these. I give full credit for video note uploads if even if done during the late pass period, but any auto-graded HW problem done after the original due date earns half credit. You can check each HW in your gradebook to see if you earned credit on the video notes uploads. If you uploaded your notes for a problem in a HW but did not earn points, let me know. In that case, I'd need to know exactly which HW assignment, and problem number.

This week you need to turn in the Graphing Packet as directed below, take Test 1, and start working on Mod 2.
Complete Review HW 7-9 by the due date of 9/19, or use a late pass.
9/20-9/24: Take Test 1 in Academic Proctoring Center. Get there early for appt. Read Test Info. Bring approved photo I.D. Bring Graphing Packet (make sure both my name and your name is on front cover) to the Admin Bldg at San Elijo, or to the 3600 building at Oceanside before (preferably before you take your test), or no later than noon on 9/26 if you forget to drop it off on your test day. There are night slots so you can drop it off 24/7.
Open Mod 2 at the beginning of this week, note the due dates, and start working on it. The first assignment is due Monday, 9/26.
Study for the test, and you should be okay. Relax!
9/22/16
This is a reminder to everyone in the class that Saturday is the deadline to take Test 1. All appointments are handled through the APC. You may be dropped if you do not take Test 1, so contact me if an emergency occurs and you can't take it. Most of you have taken the test and turned in your Graphing Packet, which is great. More info about where to submit your packet is below. I will be collecting and grading the tests next week, and will let you know after they have been graded, and are ready for pick up.
Open Mod 2, and begin watching the videos and working on HW 10, which is due Monday, 9/26.
I COLLECT AND GRADE THE GRAPHING PACKET AS PART OF YOUR HW GRADE. It must be bound, with pages in order, with both your name AND my name is on the front cover. Ideally, you turn it in before you take Test 1. Bring it to either the Admin Bldg at San Elijo, or to the 3600 building at Oceanside--there is a drop slot at both buildings so you can do this 24/7. I suggest you turn it BEFORE taking your test. If you printed it, bind pages with a stapler, put in a flat portfolio folder, or use a binder clip. Do not use a 3-ring binder. You may submit it anytime, 24/7, on Monday, 9/26. Or you may mail it, postmarked no later than 9/26/16, to:
Julie Harland
MiraCosta College, Mail Stn 1

I have graded all of the tests, and entered your grade. Go to your gradebook in MyOpenMath to see your grade on Test 1. I have also graded the Graphing Packet, but haven't entered all scores for that yet. It will show up soon.
Please pick up your graded test and Graphing Packet at the campus where you took your test during business hours. Go to the 3600 building at Oceanside or go to the Administration building at San Elijo. Ask the secretary to give you your test and packet. Review your test and make sure points were added correctly, and that your score in MyOpenMath matches the grade on your test. If you find a discrepancy, let me know about it ASAP.
Congrats to those of you who aced it.There were several perfect scores and lots of high grades.
Those who did not do well need to think about what they can do to make a big change regarding putting in more time working and reviewing in order to do better on the next test. The other option is to drop if putting in more time is not an option. The main ingredient for success is time.
Understanding what was covered in Mod 1 is necessary to continue in Mod 2. HW 10 was due Monday, and HW 11 is due Thursday. Make sure you do not fall behind. There are no packets to turn in for the remainder of the semester.
9/29/16 Test 2 Appt and Key to Test 1
The dates to take Test 2 are 10/18-22, so it's time to log in to the APC site (click link below) or to call, email, or stop by their office to schedule your Test 2 appointment. Do this today to get an appt. time that works best for your schedule. After scheduling your appt, do the HW Test 2 Appt in MyOpenMath and enter your information.
In MyOpenMath, I posted the Solutions to Test 1 and a blank test so you can print out and practice taking the test again as a review. Review throughout the semester so you'll be ready when it's time to take the final exam. If you did not do well on Test 1, copy my steps to each problem on your own paper, and then practice taking Test 1 in a test-like setting (quiet without disruptions) until you can do every problem on it perfectly! Also, see links to the Math Learning Center and Tutoring Center below.
To pass this class, you need to do well on tests. HW is a very small part of your grade, and passing the tests is crucial. There is no extra credit. Finish all of your HW ahead of time so you have a high percent on HW. If you fall behind, it's very hard to recover! So go for it and try to be ahead!
Also, the score you see in the gradebook shows what grade you have in the class as of that day. It changes each time a new HW is due, or a new grade on a test is entered.
