I wish you all the best! Go for it!
If for some reason you got behind due to Covid19, and could not complete the course, remember you still have these special options allowing late drops and refunds:
If you do want to withdraw, consider the best option below (I'd suggest 2 or 4) based on your particular situation, and whether or not you have financial aid. You MUST USE SURF TO GET A REFUND. Option #1 is best option for financial aid recipients. If you choose Option #2, you also must submit a petition as detailed below.
1. Excused Withdrawal (EW) and Refund - You can use your SURF account to withdraw from the course(s) but you will want to select the first option related to Covid-19 as a drop reason. The system will automatically assign you a grade of ‘W’ and a refund will be given to you with this option. Your grade will be changed to an ‘EW’ before the semester ends. If you are a financial aid recipient, this is your best option! Congress passed the CARES Act, which allows withdrawal without repayment issues or Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) consequences, along with several other benefits for financial aid students.
2. Withdrawal with no record and a Refund – This option is available when there is a natural disaster beyond the control of the student. You can petition to have the withdrawal (from option 1 above) removed from your record and receive a refund by submitting a Committee on Exceptions petition. This petition is available through your SURF Account in the Student Center. This would not be on your transcript. It will be as if you were never enrolled in the course. If you are a financial aid recipient, this is not a recommended option! If you have no record as though you were not in classes, it indicates that you were not eligible for financial aid. If you choose this option, you will be required to repay all the financial aid you received.
Q: Will I get a refund for my classes?
A: For withdrawals related to COVID-19, students will be able to receive a refund and a no record. Be sure to cite the reason for your withdrawal, particularly if it is related to COVID-19 in the comments for the petition. Visit the COE website for details on submitting a petition.
Q: Will I lose financial aid eligibility if I drop a class?
A: Technically speaking, all FAO policies regarding enrollment, attendance and Satisfactory Academic Progress remain in effect and unchanged. Unfortunately, “W” and “EW” grades may still lead to federal financial aid and Cal Grant disqualification. If that happens, please rest assured that the FAO office staff will be as understanding and lenient as possible on future appeals for reinstatement where lack of academic success was the result of COVID-19 related circumstances. Students are not at risk of losing eligibility to promise programs if they drop classes.

FEBRUARY 2020 ANNOUNCEMENTS
2/2/2020: Math 64 Info: Begins Monday, Feb. 3, 2020
Welcome to our class that begins Monday, Feb. 3, 2020. I'm looking forward to a great semester! Although I do not teach this class in Canvas, you will need to log in to Canvas to obtain the info needed to enroll in and submit online work in a free, course management system called MyOpenMath. Enrolling in MyOpenMath is required. After logging in to MyOpenMath, read all the material I provide about the class in MyOpenMath and complete the Intro to Class assignment before midnight, 2/3/2020.
Click here to read the syllabus for our Spring 2020 Math 64 (3071) class.
Take Care and I am always here to help and support you. Just ask!
2/3/2020 Schedule
Welcome to the first day of class! There is a lot of info in writing in MyOpenMath since we don't meet in person. Especially Read the folders in the IMPT INFO folder. If you have questions, please let me know and include your phone number and times to reach you if you want me to call you. I'll get back to you as soon as I am able. Today, you need to log in to MyOpenMath, and do the Intro to Class assessment. Then start working on 1.1 in the packet (see book info below). Complete by tomorrow so you can start 1.2. Below is the info regarding the schedule/due dates up until the deadline to take Quiz 1 (which you may open after completing the Intro to Class assessment). You may start the quiz anytime you are ready to work on some of the problems, and complete it over several days. So you can do some problems after you do 1.1.
SCROLL DOWN FOR THE SCHEDULE. The CALENDAR and FOLDERS also show DUE DATES. ALSO READ INFO BELOW SCHEDULE.
Four unit packets comprise the "book" for this class. Click here for Unit Packet Info, including purchase/print options, videos, answers, corrections and all four PDFs of the four Unit Packets. I suggest purchasing in the bookstore for $35.55 but you may print the PDFs, or view online and copy and do all work on your own paper. Since we do not meet for class in person, watch/transcribe videos by copying what is on each video in your own video notebook. They contain examples. Then do problems in packet as your written HW to prepare for online quizzes. The forums require you to post about problems in the packets. I do not collect, grade, or give points for transcribed video notes in your own notebook, or for the written HW problems you do in each packet. Do not skip watching or transcribing the videos, or doing the written homework even though it's not part of your grade! They prepare you for online quizzes, which is part of your grade. Follow the instructions for making the required forum posts before the due date. They correspond to the problems in the sections of the packet assigned before doing each online quiz. You have several days to post. You do not have to wait until you have done all the sections in the packet assigned for that quiz. Completing the forums verifies attendance and is part of your grade.
Abbreviations
MOM: MyOpenMath; Q1 (Quiz 1); F1 (Forum Post 1); 1.1-1.4 (Sections 1.1-1.4 in Unit 1 of printed unit packet)
Most Due dates can also be viewed and clicked on in the Calendar. The dates are show in each cell. 1.2 V&P means to watch/transcribe the videos in Unit 1 section 2 (1.2) in your own notebook, and to do the problems in 1.2. Ideally, make a forum post according to the instructions in each forum (F1, F2, etc.) a few days before the deadline. Each forum is due by 1 pm on the date the quiz is due to give me time to answer any questions.
2/3: Intro to Class due before midnight
2/4 1.1 V&P
2/5: 1.2 V&P
2/6: 1.3 V&P
2/7: 1.4 V&P
2/10: Schedule an appointment through the APC to take Test 1.
2/11: F1 due by 1 pm; Q1 due before midnight
Order of doing work: Watch/transcribe videos for sections assigned (see webpage or videos listed for each online quiz), complete problems in those sections in the packet, complete online quiz, take proctored tests during test window dates. Redeem a late pass
on any online assignment if you don't finish by the due date. Please remember to submit answers to at least SOME questions in the assignment by the original due date. A late pass gives you more time to complete it.
Folders, quizzes, and forums may not be visible until a week before its due date. Log in frequently. Watch/transcribe and redo problems on videos in a notebook, and do sections in packet BEFORE doing problems from those sections in the online quiz.
2/5/2020 Forums, Quiz, Test 1
I hope you are having fun watching/transcribing the videos and completing the written (ungraded) problems in the Unit 1 packet that are assigned each day. This week you'll be doing sections 1.1-1.4 in the packet (see schedule below). Click the links to access Videos for each section in Unit 1 , Answers (and any corrections to answers) to problems in the Unit 1 packet , Corrections to the Unit 1 packet - posted as they arise. You may open Quiz 1 (labeled Q1: 1.1-1.4 in the Unit 1 folder) anytime to work on problems. If you do a problem incorrectly, look back at your notes from the videos and problems in the packet and try again. After you've completed Q1, it's good to try the problems over and over again (you'll get new ones) in any order and make sure you can do that without help.
Don't forget to make a post in Forum 1 (labeled F1: 1.1-1.4 in the Unit 1 folder) no later than 1 pm on 2/11/2020. You may post about any problem from 1.1-1.4. There is no need to wait until you do all the problems in 1.1-1.4. You may post about a problem in 1.1 if you've already completed some problems in that section, or wait to post about a problem in another section. The forums in each unit are specifically for problems in the packet (Units 1-4), and completing them is part of your grade. There is an optional, ungraded forum where you may ask any non-personal questions about the class, or about any problem in the videos, packets, or in the quizzes. Or any question about math! Please use that forum for all class-related questions, and questions about math so that all students will benefit from that discussion. For personal questions, message me in MyOpenMath, or email me.
The test window dates for Test 1 are Feb. 26 - Feb. 29. You must schedule an appointment directly with the Academic Proctoring Center ahead of time, and it is recommended you log in to schedule it at least 2 weeks ahead of the date you'd like to take it. The appointment system is up and running, so you may log in now to schedule it. In fact, you are welcome to schedule all four tests now. Look at your schedule, decide the date, time, campus during the test window dates that work best for you, and make your appointment well in advance to have the best chance of getting your preferred slot. Read all the info in the pink Test Info folder in MyOpenMath.
If you have any questions, please reach out to me, or ask questions in the forums. I am happy to help! I want you to succeed and love math! As a reminder, this week's schedule is below. (1.1 V&P means to watch the assigned videos for 1.1 and to do the problems in section 1 of the Unit packet (1.1).
2/4 1.1 V&P
2/5: 1.2 V&P
2/6: 1.3 V&P
2/7: 1.4 V&P
2/10: Schedule an appointment through the APC to take Test 1.
2/11: F1 due by 1 pm; Q1 due before midnight
2/5/2020 Poll: Math 64 Online Office Hour Times on Monday

2/6/2020 Math 64 Quiz, Late Pass, and Forum Info
I hope your first few days of class are going well and that you are having fun!
You should open and start working on the first quiz, Q1:1.1-1.4, before Monday in order to have plenty of time to complete it by the due date. It is in the Unit 1 folder. After opening the folder and clicking on Q1, you will see links to the videos associated for those problems that you should have transcribed for your own, personal video notes. Scroll down to see all the problems on the quiz. You may do the problems in any order, and keep trying until you get each problem correct. If you are not usually getting the problems correct on the first try without looking back or clicking for help, you should perhaps watch, review and/or work through the problems on the videos again all on your own, and redo some packet problems. The quiz is like online homework, but to earn full credit for a problem, you must submit the answer correctly by the original due date. Read below for info about using a late pass if you don't complete and get full credit before the due date. See the schedule in IMPT INFO for the due date for each quiz, or click on Calendar or the Unit folder for due dates. The original post or reply in each required forum must be submitted before 1 pm the same day the quiz is due. No posts are allowed after that, but you may read the posts all semester.
Please click here to read full details regarding Assignment and Late Pass Info. Everyone was given a whopping 200 late passes! That is definitely generous and way more than you will need. Always open and do at least a few problems in each quiz no later than the original due date. NEVER OPEN A QUIZ IN REVIEW MODE UNLESS YOU HAVE COMPLETED IT AND DON'T WANT ANY MORE CREDIT. If you need more time to complete it, click USE LATE PASS to get a 48 hour extension from the due date. You'll see a new due date, but it's considered late if you used a late pass, and each problem in Quiz 2-13 done correctly after the original due date (while using a late pass, and not in review mode) has a 25% penalty. You can use more than one late pass on an assessment, so if you need 96 hours to complete a quiz, you would need to use two of your late passes. Any problem done correctly before the due date always earns full credit even if you clicked to use a late pass before the due date, or did that accidentally. Any problem done correctly after the due date (using a late pass) earns 75% credit. The last day to do any problems on a quiz in a unit is on the last date to take the test from that unit. Late passes can only be used for quizzes, not forums or tests.
Note about the infinitely symbol, interval notation, and the Math Quill. To write the infinity symbol, click inside the answer box, and you will see a vertical yellow bar to the right. Click on it. Either you'll see the infinity symbol and you can click on it, or first click on the tab that says Intervals if that's what you see. Or you can type it yourself by using two of the lower case letter, o, like this: oo Note it will be marked wrong if you use two of the upper case letter, O, or zeros. So do not write it this way: OO or 00 !!!! Please click here to read more info about the Math Quill and How to Enter Answers in MyOpenMath to avoid being marked wrong. It's also a good idea to do the Short Useful Tutorial: How to use Math Quill in the IMPT INFO folder in MyOpenMath.
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask! I am here to help you succeed!
2/9/2020 Forum 1 and Quiz 1
I hope you had a good first week of class, and are feeling comfortable with MyOpenMath. If you have questions, click the forum link you see when you log in to ask a question: Questions about class, or concepts/problems in videos, packet, or a quiz. Not required or graded. If you haven't yet done so, open the Unit 1 folder and click on F1: 1.1-1.4 to make your first required forum post about a problem from 1.1-1.4 in the Unit 1 printed packet. After clicking F1: 1.1-1.4, click on View Post and Reply Instructions for the forum post instructions. This forum post is due before 1 pm on 2/11. Late passes are not available for forum posts. You should also click on Q1: 1.1-1.4 and start working on it as it is also due 2/11. I'm here to help if you have questions! Just Ask! Keep up with (and if possible get ahead of) the assignments to avoid stress and have the best chance of success! I want you to succeed!!!
The first forum and quiz, both found in the pink Unit 1 folder when you log into MyOpenMath, are DUE TODAY. Some of you have completed both already. Yay! Keep up the good work!
If you have not posted in F1 by 1 pm today, or if you have not answered any questions in Q1 before midnight, do that ASAP to show attendance/participation in the class. Otherwise, if it appears you are not interested in the class, you may be dropped as the deadline to receive a refund is approaching. If after doing some problems in Q1, you need more time to complete it, click on Use Late Pass (LP) for more time to see a later due date. If you use a LP, you still need to do some problems in Q1 today regardless of the new due date you see.
2/11/2020 Required Attendance; Drop Deadline is 2/13/20
I'm happy for those of you keeping up and working on getting the online work submitted on time! Keep it up! It'll be worth it. In that case, no need to keep reading unless you are considering dropping the class for some other reason.
If you are not working on the class or if you are considering dropping it, note that Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020 is the deadline for you to log in to SURF to drop it and receive a refund and also have no grade placed on your permanent record.
If you do not open and complete some problems in Quiz 1 by Tuesday night, 2/11, the due date, please contact me if you want to continue in the class since not doing that in non-attendance/participation. I monitor interest by checking that you are opening and doing each forum and quiz in each Unit folder (also in Calendar) by the original due date (see Schedule in IMPT INFO folder). If you do not open and complete some problems in Q1 by tonight (2/11, Tuesday), you may be dropped in SURF on 2/12 or 2/13 unless I hear from you. If you do contact me, please explain what's going on and if there is anything I can do to help. Remember to sign any email with your first and last name so I know who is writing me. I hope that you decide to go for it, and put in the time and energy to continue with the class! I am here to help.
2/12/2020 Info
We are on to the next few sections in the packet in preparation for Quiz 2, due next Wed. You should be working on 1.5 today.
If you did not complete all the problem in Q1 yet, and would like more time to complete them for full credit, do NOT open it unless you use a Late Pass. Each late pass you use extends the due date by 2 days. So if you need more time, use another late pass. Click Late Pass Info for all details about how you can keep practicing problems in review mode, and how the late passes work. After Q1, there is a 25% penalty for problems done in quizzes after the original due date if using a late pass. There is no penalty for completing problems using a late pass for Q1, since it's the first one, and I know you are all getting used to the class and MyOpenMath.
Remember: The test window dates for Test 1 are Feb. 26 - Feb. 29. If you haven't scheduled an appointment to take Test 1 with the Academic Proctoring Center, do it ASAP. Look at your schedule, decide the date, time, campus that works best for you, and make your appointment well in advance to have the best chance of getting your preferred time slot. Read all the info in the pink Test Info folder. Below is the schedule from today through next Wednesday, the due date for F2 and Q2. As soon as you do problems in 1.5, feel free to post in F2. Don't wait until the last minute. You may post as many times as you'd like and reply to students. Helping others is a good way to help yourself solidify your own knowledge.
2/12 1.5 V&P
2/13: 1.6 V&P
Note: Campus is closed, and I will be out of town 2/14-2/17 for the holiday weekend, so may not be able to respond to any emails during that time.
2/18: 1.7 V&P
2/19: F2 due by 1 pm; Q2 due before midnight
If you have any questions, please reach out to me, or ask questions in the forums. I am happy to help!
2/18/2020 Info
I hope you are all doing well, enjoyed the holiday weekend, are caught up, and enjoying this class. As always, please reach out to me via email or the message system in MyOpen Math, and ask math questions in the forums if you need any help. I am happy to help, and would love to hear from you!
Today, 2/18, you should complete the 1.7 by watching/transcribing the videos and doing the problems in 1.7 of the packet.
Remember that doing each forum in the Unit 1 forum by the due date is part of your grade. It should take less than 5 minutes to make your post. If you haven't made yours yet, please log in to MyOpenMath and do it today. It can be over any problem in 1.5-1.7. F2 is due by 1 pm on Wed, 1/19. Don't put it off.
Quiz 2 (Q2) is due before midnight on Wed, 1/19. Please start working on it ASAP. Although you may use a late pass to finish doing problems if you don't complete it by the due date/time, you'll only earn 75% credit for problems completed after the original due date. So please try to complete all of it on time. Remember to not open any quizzes in Review Mode unless you are sure you do If you do not have at least 80% in Q1 yet, I would suggest you use Late Passes to continue working on it. Go for 100%. On Q1, you can still earn 100% on any problem done after the due date if you use a late pass.
Below are the 3 last sections to cover, which will be on Quiz 3 and Test 1. The schedule for those, with due dates are below.
2/20: 1.8 V&P
2/21: 1.9 V&P
2/24: 1.10 V&P; 1.11 (Unit 1 Review Problems)
2/25: F3 due by 1 pm; Q3 due before midnight
The test window dates for Test 1 over all of Unit 1 (1.1 - 1.10) are next week, Wed, Feb. 26 - Sat, Feb. 29. If you haven't scheduled an appointment to take Test 1 with the Academic Proctoring Center, do it ASAP. Also, definitely do the review and practice test and read about how the test works (directions, grading, etc.) in Test Info folder in MyOpenMath.
Okay, algebrains (a term coined by a previous student), GO FOR IT AND HAVE FUN!
2/19/2020 Note to students not posting in Forum 2 who also did not complete Quiz 1 due the previous week.
Are you okay? I noticed you did not post in the graded Forum Post (F2) by 1 pm, today, 2/19/20, which was the due date. I was wondering why you didn't do it.
Are you watching the videos and doing the associated problems in sections of the packet that are assigned? It's best to set aside at least 12 hours a week for this class. Do you have time to do that? You haven't caught up on Quiz 1 from last week, and Quiz 2 is due tonight. It's fast-paced, and important to keep up, especially with the test coming up next week.
I would really like to hear from you to understand what is going on, and what your strategy is going forward. I want you to pass the class, and am here to help you in any way I can. If you put in the time and complete the work assigned (both graded and un-graded) on time, you should be fine. Is there anything I can do to help you?
Test 1 is next week. Could you please let me know when your appointment is, or if you haven't made it yet, please do that ASAP, and let me know.
Take Care and I look forward to hearing from you!

Test 1 is this week. Appointments made directly with the Academic Proctoring Center are required, and you must take it at your appointment time during the test window: Wed, Feb. 26 - Sat, Feb. 29. If needed, use the restroom before going to the APC, and show up for your appointment a little early. Bring a valid photo ID when you show up for your test appointment. Make sure you read all the info about tests in the Test Info folder, especially how the test is graded. A copy of the PDF was sent via email. You are usually given up to 5 chances to earn credit on a problem, but there is a 20% penalty for each attempt after the first attempt. You do not get to try a similar problem as in the quizzes, but all problems on the test are similar to ones assigned in the online quizzes. I highly recommend you do the recommended review and practice test (without video help or the packet or notes) posted in Unit 1 to be as prepared as possible. Those are not part of your grade, but essential if you want to practice for the real test.
2/28/2020 Info
This Saturday, 2/29/20 is the deadline to take Test 1 during your scheduled appointment time. Appointments made directly with the APC are required.
As soon as you complete Test 1, start working on Unit 2. The first forum and quiz for Unit 2, covering 2.1-2.3, is coming up. F4 is due by 1pm and Q4 is due by midnight on Thursday, 3/5/20. Remember to make a forum post. Not participating in the forums lowers your grade in the class by a full 5%, so don't put it off. Follow the Schedule in the IMPT INFO folder. Due dates for online work are also in the Calendar and each Unit Folder.
The next official online Office Hour is Monday, 3/2/20, from 12-1 pm. Email me anytime at mccmathgal@gmail.com. If a ZOOM meeting has been set up, I'll send the link to all students. In that case, that's where I'll be during the office hour. Otherwise, it will be through email, but you are welcome to email me with your phone number if you'd like me to call you or to set up a ZOOM meeting.
If you have any questions, please ask! Have a great weekend!
MARCH 2020 ANNOUNCEMENTS
3/2/2020 Info sent to students who did not take Test 1
You didn't take Test 1, so have a zero on it. Why did you not take it? Are you okay? What's going on?
There are no make-ups, but your grade on the final exam will replace the zero on Test 1.
Make sure you keep up with Unit 2 deadlines--watch/transcribe assigned videos, do the problems in the packet, make forum posts, take quiz. Also, close to the time to take Test 2, take the Practice Test for it, and make sure you schedule your appointment for Test 2, and take it during the test date window.
If you need any help or have questions, please let me know.
3/2/2020 Info
I hope you had a good weekend, and are ready to dig in to Unit 2!
If you did well on Test 1, congrats! If not, it's a good plan to keep up daily with Unit 2 work, and to give yourself plenty of time to do the optional Review and Practice Test posted in Unit 2 before taking the actual test. It's all about putting in the time, practicing a lot, and being able to do any problem in the videos, packet, or quizzes in any order. Go for it! To review Test 1, go to your gradebook and click on Test 1. You will see your answers. If you missed any, you may click on Show Answer to see the correct answer. To review and practice taking it again or to try similar problems, open the Test Folder and you may practice in review mode. If you have any questions, or think something was graded incorrectly, please contact me ASAP, and I will check your online work, and your scratch paper.
To view exactly what to complete each day and due dates, click the Calendar link you see when you log in to MyOpenMath, or read Schedule under IMPT INFO.
This week, do 2.1-2.3 Mon-Wed, post in F4 anytime before 1 pm on Thursday, 3/5, and complete Q4 by midnight on 3/5. Keep up! It's crucial.
The dates you may take Test 2 are April 1-4, after Spring Break. Feel free to schedule your appointment soon to get the date/time that works best for you. CLICK HERE to schedule an APPT. If you have question or would like to schedule your tests by phone, call 760-795-6685.
My Office Hour is today, Monday, 3/2/20, from 12-1 pm. Email me anytime before or during that time at mccmathgal@gmail.com. You are also welcome to email me your phone number if you'd like me to call you or to set up a ZOOM meeting.
3/4/2020 Info
Remember to make a forum post in F4 about any problem in 2.1-2.3 in the packet today, if possible, and at least before 1 pm on Thursday, 3/5. You may earn credit from making an original post by asking a question about a problem, posting your solution to a problem, or replying to someone else who made a post about a problem by asking them a question, or making a comment. It's easy to do and 5% of your grade!! Don't put it off. Also, it's a good idea to open Q4 and get started on some of the problems since it is due tomorrow, 3/5.
Remember I am hear to help you if you have any questions at all! Please ask in the forums if it's a math question! The most important thing is devote the hours necessary, ideally 2 hours a day, to keep up with the work. I want you to be successful and pass! You can do it!
However, if you do not have the time, or have decided not to continue for any reason, remember to log in to SURF to drop the class, so you earn a W, not an F.
3/6/2020 Info
We are on to the next two sections in the packet in preparation for Quiz 5, due next Wed. You should be working on 2.4 today.
If you did not complete all the problems in Q4 (or Q1-Q3) yet, and would like more time to complete them for credit, use one or more Late Passes, as needed. Below is the schedule from today through next Wednesday, the due date for F5 and Q5. As soon as you do problems in 2.4 of the packet, feel free to post in F5. Don't wait until the last minute. You may post as many times as you'd like and replying to students also earns credit. Helping others is a good way to help yourself solidify your own knowledge.

3/12/2020 Info
Next week is Spring Break. You should be working on 2.6 and 2.7 this week. Complete the problems through 2.7 in the Packet before the end of the break. If you are behind, consider using that time to redeem late passes on any Quizzes where you want to earn more credit, and catch up as needed! We'll be completing Unit 2 the week after Spring Break, and Test 2 is the following week. The test window for Test 2 is April 1-4. If you haven't already scheduled an appointment with the Academic Proctoring Center, please do that now.
3/13/2020 IMPORTANT Info
Due to the Coronavirus, you now have two weeks off for Spring Break. I have revised the due dates in the Calendar in MyOpenMath, which means we are compressing the next 8 weeks down to 7 weeks, plus the final exam. However, you are welcome to go by the original schedule posted in the IMPT INFO folder if you want to continue working at the same pace (so you are less rushed). Therefore, the starting dates for the tests will remain the same even though the due dates in the calendar for the packet, forums, and quizzes show later dates. But I am adding the following Monday and Tuesday to the days available to take the tests in the APC. All dates regarding tests are tentative until the APC is up and running again. This is a huge shift for them to make adjustments. So stay tuned for updates or changes.
You should have completed 2.6 and 2.7 in the packet this week. So make sure you complete the problems through 2.7 in the Packet before the end of the 3/22/10 if you want to stay on the original schedule. Otherwise, finish by 3/29/20. If you are behind, consider using the next 2 weeks to redeem late passes on any Quizzes where you want to earn more credit, and catch up as needed! The later due date for F6 and Q6 is Monday, 3/30/20. See the Calendar for the other updated due dates. The tentative test window for Test 2 is now April 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7.
Stay healthy and be safe!
3/20/2020 IMPORTANT Info
Click here for announcements/emails this semester.
I hope all of you are doing okay, and staying well during this unprecedented time in our lives.
The campus is now completely shut down to students and all non-essential workers for the remainder of the semester. Therefore, you will be not be taking tests at the APC. So, all appointments are canceled, and you won't have to come to campus to complete them. As I stated in my email on 3/13, I'm extending the due dates for the forums and quizzes, and expanding the dates you may take each test. More details will be forthcoming. But this means you will need to think about when and where you might want to take it. You can use your own computer, or any computer where you can access the internet, and will need good service. You'll need a quiet place where you will be able to concentrate and not be disturbed, as it will be timed.
We are back to class on March 30, but you are free to continue working. Many of you have logged in to catch up or to work ahead! Keep up the good work.
The most important thing is that you are safe and well! Take CARE!

3/30/20 Extremely IMPT: Refunds, Drops, etc.
I hope all of you are doing okay and are able and ready to continue in the class, and pass. However, what is most important is your health and loved ones, and I am sorry if any of you are experiencing hardships. We are all in this together, and I am here to help support you in any way I can. Let me know if you have any questions!
VERY IMPORTANT NEW INFO: There are new, very generous drop/refund options from California's Chancellor's office available to anyone in a college class this semester who needs to drop due to the coronavirus. Options below are available for the remainder of the semester: even to students who remain in class and take the final exam. Students who decide to drop may request an Excused Withdrawal (best for financial aid students) or Withdrawal with no record on transcript. Both of these offer a refund. Since students have until the end of the semester to decide, there is no reason for a student who is behind to drop if they think there is a chance they can turn things around and pass. I encourage anyone interested to carefully read the info below, which is on the Student
Website: http://www.miracossta.edu/admissions
Email: admissions@miracosta.edu
The Chancellor’s Office has put together four new options to support you depending upon your needs!
1. Extension of Pass/No Pass Deadline - Students are able to request a change to the grading basis of their course(s) through the end of the semester. By changing the grading basis from a letter grade (i.e. A, B, C) to a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) you can limit the impact of the course outcome on your Grade Point Average (GPA). By earning a grade of ‘C’ or better you will be issued a grade of ‘P’. The ‘P’ grade will give you credit for passing the course but will not factor into your overall GPA. If you do not end up earning a ‘C’ or better you will be issued a grade of ‘NP’ (No Pass) and will not earn units but it will not factor into your GPA as a substandard (D, F) grade would. Additionally, the ‘No Pass’ grade will not be counted towards progress probation or dismissal if it is due to Covid-19 related reasons. To change your grading option to Pass/No Pass simply submit the Petition for Pass/No Pass to [admissions@miracosta.edu]admissions@miracosta.edu. (Note: While the Chancellor’s Office is in discussion with the CSU’s and UC’s the potentially adverse transfer implication of a pass or no-pass grading option remain in effect).
3. Withdrawal – You can use SURF to withdraw from your course(s). This will put a W on your transcript and will calculate towards probation or dismissal status. This will also affect financial aid. Students can process this through April 24, 2020 for full semester-length courses. Please check with your instructor for short-term class deadline dates.
3/30/2020 Math 64 NEW Test Info 3/30/20
Remember to make a post in F6 by 1 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 3/31. Q6 is due at midnight tomorrow. This covers material assigned before spring break.
Regarding tests, you take each one at home, or wherever you want that has good internet service. Please read the info below. More Info is in MyOpenMath.
Spring 2020: Tests after spring break will not be proctored. You are on the honor system. You must take Test 2, Test 3, and the Final during the test window dates. Take each one at a place/date/time that is quiet, and where you will not be disturbed, which can be in the middle of the night if that's your preference. You do NOT need to decide ahead of time, or tell me when you plan to take it. It's up to you to open and take it during the dates allowed. Each must be completed by midnight the day of its deadline. You'll see a password when you open the link to take the test, and must enter it to open and begin the test. In the APC, you had 1.5 hours to take a test. Due to circumstances that might be out of your control after you start a test, you will have a full 3 hours from the time you enter the password to take each test and the final. To have the full time available, start each test before 9 pm on the date of the deadline. The clock starts after you enter your password.
TEST WINDOW DATES are in the Calendar.
T1: covers Unit 1 videos, Unit 1, Q1-Q3 & Review (This test was proctored in the APC.)
T2: covers Unit 2 videos, Unit 2, Q4-Q7 & Review
T3: covers Unit 3 videos, Unit 3, Q8-Q10 & Review
Final: covers anything from entire semester; emphasis on Unit 4 and Q11-Q13
Each Test will be visible in the Test Folder during the test window dates for that test. Label each problem and show all work on scratch paper and send to me. Check work, enter answers carefully online and preview before submitting. Most problems allow up to 5 attempts. When extra attempts are allowed, there is a 20% penalty for each attempt after the first attempt.

I understand that some of you might be getting questions from students regarding withdrawing from classes or taking a pass/no pass so I wanted to send today an update on the guidance that we received from the chancellor’s office in these areas and also some information on implications for financial aid for students. This information has been included also in our FAQs for the students.
Students have reached out to express their anxiety around the ability to be successful in a remote environment and we are trying to encourage them to give it a try considering that you have worked hard to make it flexible for them and that there is still time for them to drop the class (April 24th for semester long classes), if they try it and they don’t think that they can do it.
1. Extension of Pass/No Pass Deadline
Students are able to request a change to the grading basis of their course(s) through the end of the semester. By changing the grading basis from a letter grade (i.e. A, B, C) to a Pass/No Pass (P/NP) they can limit the impact of the course outcome on their Grade Point Average (GPA). By earning a grade of ‘C’ or better they will be issued a grade of ‘P’. The ‘P’ grade will give them credit for passing the course but will not factor into the overall GPA. If they do not end up earning a ‘C’ or better they will be issued a grade of ‘NP’ (No Pass) and will not earn units but it will not factor into the GPA as a substandard (D, F) grade would. Additionally, the ‘No Pass’ grade will not be counted towards progress probation or dismissal if it is due to Covid-19 related reasons. To change their grading option to Pass/No Pass, they simply submit the Petition for Pass/No Pass to admissions@miracosta.edu. We are suggesting that students do talk with a counselor if they are planning to change to a P/NP because there are transfer implications where some universities accept only a letter grade. (Note:The Chancellor’s Office is in discussion with the CSU’s and UC’s the potentially adverse transfer implication of a pass or no-pass grading option remain in effect).
2. Excused Withdrawal (EW) and refund - Students can use their SURF account to withdraw from the course(s) but they will need to select the first option related to Covid-19 as a drop reason.
The system will automatically assign them a grade of ‘W’ and a refund will be given to them with this option. Their grade will be changed to an ‘EW’ before the semester ends.
If they are a financial aid recipient, this is their best option! Congress passed the CARES Act on Friday afternoon, which allows withdrawal without repayment issues or Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) consequences, along with several other benefits for financial aid students.
3. Withdrawal – They can use SURF to withdraw from their course(s). This will put a W on their transcript and will calculate towards probation or dismissal status. This will also affect financial aid. Students can process this through April 24, 2020 for full semester-length courses. Obviously the EW is the better option.
4. Withdrawal with no record and a Refund – This option is available when there is a natural disaster beyond the control of the student. They can petition to have the withdrawal (from option 1 above) removed from their record and receive a refund by submitting a Committee on Exceptions petition. This petition is available through their SURF Account in the Student Center. If this option is selected, the class would not be on their transcript. It will be as if they were never enrolled in the course. If they are a financial aid recipient, this is not a recommended option! If they have no record as though they were not in classes, it indicates that they were not eligible for financial aid. If they choose this option, they will be required to repay all the financial aid they received.
Our CARE team also put together a handout for students with tips on how to manage this time and new environment. Please click here to access it. It is also available on Canvas. All student support services are available remotely to the students and you all.
3/30/2020 No Penalty for using late passes for Quizzes 6-13!
Due to the time constraints some of you may be experiencing due to the stay at home order, I have removed any penalties for problems done on Quizzes 6-13 after the original due date. You will still need to use a late pass to open them and get credit, but you will get full credit if after the due date, you use a late pass and do not open them in review mode.

With only 5-6 weeks left of the semester, it's important to keep up-to-date, and not fall behind. Anyone who does not feel that is possible should consider withdrawing at some point before the end of the semester to avoid an F. If you do want to withdraw, consider the best option below (I'd suggest 2 or 4) based on your particular situation, and whether or not you have financial aid. You MUST USE SURF TO GET A REFUND. Option #2 is best option for financial aid recipients. If you choose Option #4, you also must submit a petition as detailed below.
