1/21/19 Email Math 64 Info
Hi all,
If you are already registered in MyOpenMath, that's great! If not, read the info below. To remain enrolled, everyone needs to be registered in MyOpenMath and begin working in the class on Tuesday, 1/22/19. If you have questions, let me know.
To begin, complete the Intro assignment in MyOpen Math. You'll also need to purchase, print, or view the Unit 1 packet online. Watch/transcribe the videos for 1.1-1.4 (in Q1 or on the website for Unit 1), do the problems for 1.1-1.4 on pages 1-31 in the Unit 1 packet, make the Week 1 forum post following the posting directions, and then complete Quiz 1 by the due date. Have fun!!!
Click for direct link to the folder of PDFs of all 4 Unit Packets.
Click to Read Announcements. Click for APC website info or to schedule tests.
1/23/19 Email Math 64 Info
Hi all,
Make sure your email in SURF and in MyOpenMath is the one you check regularly. Click here to check/update your info in SURF.
I hope you are all enjoying the class. After you do the Intro to Class assignment, follow the steps below as it explains in detail what to do this first week of class. Due dates are in the Calendar.
Also, please carefully read the Instructions for this Class link and the Schedule for all the details. You'll need to purchase the Unit 1 packet in the bookstore or print the PDF at this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1j-lIrdGtVq5p_hkKTmq7ihAcI2vr55Kz
I DO NOT COLLECT THE UNIT PACKET OR GRADE IT. It's your own written homework you do to prepare for the quizzes and tests, and you use the problems from the packet (not the quiz) to an make the required forum post each week.
The first week covers sections 1.1-1.4: You first watch/transcribe the videos for section 1.1 and complete the problems in the packet for section 1.1. Then you do the same for 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4. Sometime during the week you make a post in the required weekly forum about any problem in the Packet from 1.1-1.4. After doing the problems in the packet, open Q1:1.1-1.4 and complete it. Details are below.
1) Go to https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1videos or open up Q1:1.1-1.4 in Unit 1 to view the assigned videos for 1.1-1.4. Below is what you should see for the 1.1 videos.
1.1: Relations and Functions
Watch if interested in more info on Sets: https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclub/Home/math/sets
F1: https://youtu.be/3IjfebJgPP8 [+]
F2: https://youtu.be/NYQPPLpK9Xs [+]
2. Watch and transcribe the 2 videos and organize in your own video notebook for notes.
3. In the Unit 1 packet, do the problems in 1.1 on pages 2-12. Problems that have an asterisk were on one of the assigned videos. It's a lot of pages because there is space to show all your work in the workbook.
NOTE: Anytime this week, make a post in the Week 1 forum by the due date about any problem from 1.1-1.4 in the packet.
4. Go back up to step 1 to view the videos for 1.2, watch/transcribe those, and then do the problems in 1.2 on pages 13-20.
5. Go back up to step 1 to view the videos for 1.3, watch/transcribe those, and then do the problems in 1.3 on pages 21-25.
6. Go back up to step 1 to view the videos for 1.4, watch/transcribe those, and then do the problems in 1.4 on pages 13-20.
The answers to the problems in the Unit 1 packet are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/solutions
7. Open up Q1: 1.1-1.4 and complete the problems by the due date. Use a late pass if you don't finish by due date.
1/25/19 Math 64 Info
We are almost done with Week 1. Isn't that exciting?
I hope everyone is following the schedule and learning to navigate MyOpenMath. If not, see the email/announcement from 1/23/19 about the order in which to do everything this first week. Ask any non-personal questions about the class or the Quiz in the non-graded Questions forum so everyone benefits from my reply.
Each week, everyone needs to demonstrate online attendance by logging in and submitting online work, which includes submitting answers in the Quiz and posting in the Required Weekly Forum post by their due dates. For this first week, Monday, 1/28/19, is the due date for posting in the Week 1 Forum and the due date for Q1: 1.1-1.4. Follow the posting instructions for the forum--post about a problem from 1.1-1.4 in the printed Unit 1 Packet. Do not post about a problem in the Q1--those questions go in the other non-graded forum.
I want all of you to succeed, and the main ingredients to doing that are time, energy, and commitment to keeping up with the schedule. Ask questions if you need help. I am happy to meet with you in office hours, talk with you over the phone (send me an email with your phone number and times you may be reached), or conduct a zoom meeting online. There are also many resources available to you on campus. Consider doing work at the Math Learning Center in the library, or booking tutoring appointments. Do whatever it takes to be successful! It will be worth it!
Have a wonderful weekend!
1/26/19 Math 64 Quiz, Late Pass, and Forum Info
I hope your first week of the Spring semester went well and that you are having fun!
You should open and start working on the first quiz, Q1:1.1-1.4, before Monday in order to have time to complete it by the due date. It is in the Unit 1 folder. After opening the folder and clicking on Q1, you will see the videos associated for those problems that you should have transcribed for your own, personal video notes. Scroll down to see all the problems on the quiz. You may do the problems in any order, and keep trying until you get each problem correct. If you are not usually getting the problems correct on the first try without looking back or clicking for help, you should probably try all the problems on the videos again on your own, and redo packet problems. The quiz is like online homework, but you must get the answer correct by the due date to get full credit. Read below for info about using a late pass if you didn't complete and get full credit before the due date. The due date/time for Q1 is Monday, 1/28/19 at 11:59 pm. That is also the due date to post an original post or reply in the Week 1 Forum. No posts are allowed after that, but you may read the posts all semester.
Note about the infinitely symbol, interval notation, and the Math Quill. To write the infinity symbol, click inside the answer box, and you will see a vertical yellow bar to the right. Click on it. Either you'll see the infinity symbol and you can click on it, or first click on the tab that says Intervals if that's what you see. Or you can type it yourself by using two of the lower case letter, o, like this: oo Note it will be marked wrong if you use two of the upper case letter, O, or zeros. So do not write it this way: OO or 00 !!!! Please click here to read more info about the Math Quill and How to Enter Answers in MyOpenMath to avoid being marked wrong. It's also a good idea to do the Short Useful Tutorial: How to use Math Quill in the IMPT INFO folder in MyOpenMath.
Please click here to read full details regarding Assignment and Late Pass Info. Everyone was given a whopping 50 late passes! That is definitely generous and way more than you should need. If you need more time to complete the Intro to Class assignment or any Quiz, click to use a late to get a 48 hour extension from the due date. You can use more than one late pass on an assessment, so if you need 96 hours, you would be using 2 of your late passes. Any problem done correctly before the due date earns full credit even if you already clicked to use a late pass. Any problem done correctly after the due date (using a late pass) earns half credit. The last day to do any problems on a quiz in a unit is on the last date to take the test from that unit.
Have a great weekend!
1/26/19 Email sent to some students:
To show attendance and not be dropped, you need to log in each week and ALSO submit online work, which means to submit work in an assessment (Intro to Class, Quiz 1) and post in the required Week 1 forum.
I'll be dropping anyone not showing online attendance by doing the three following things. None of these things take very much time, certainly less than the attendance requirement of spending 4 hours online in MyOpenMath each week, or the 4 hours you would spend in a class taught on campus.
1. Complete the Intro to Class assignment immediately. (This is a very short assignment and takes most students 15-25 minutes to complete. It's not math work.)
2. Post in the required Week 1 forum. (This can be a quick reply to someone else's post.)
3. Complete at least one problem in Q1 by Monday. (This shows you have done some math the first week.)
1/28/19 Zoom Meeting Today at 4:30 pm
Hi all,
I will be conducting a Zoom meeting starting at 4:30 pm today, 1/28/19, that you may access via phone, computer, or smart phone. This is an optional online meeting in real time, and I hope some of you can make it. I will be using an iPad Pro in order to answer any questions by writing and showing steps to any math problems. I'll also answer any other questions you have about the class. This is the first zoom meeting I have set up for a class, so I may be getting used to the system and the way things work. If you have earbuds or a headset, it might be useful. Below are the details for joining. It will end when no students are still in attendance. So if you want to join late, go ahead and try. It may still be going on. We'll have more of these with more notice. I'll be sending out a doodle poll soon to get input on the best days/times of the week there is interest.

1/28/19 Math 64 Week 2 Info
Hi all,
Make sure you make your Week 1 Forum Post and do at least some problems in Quiz 1 (Q1:1.1-1.4) before midnight. If you need more time to complete Q1, use a late pass so you can keep working on it after the due. This is the only quiz where there is no penalty for problems done after the due date, you need to have at least started working on it before midnight to show attendance. Read the Instructions for this Class link and the Schedule for more details.
Week 2 covers sections 1.5-1.7, and you should begin working on 1.5 today. Below are the steps for the week. Due dates are in the Calendar or when you open the quiz. Q2 and the Week 2 Forum post is due next Monday. The Week 2 Forum opens up after midnight, the deadline to make a post for the Week 1 Forum.
1) Go to https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1videos or open up Q2:1.5-1.7 in Unit 1 to view the assigned videos for those sections.
2. Watch and transcribe the videos for 1.5 and organize in your own video notebook for notes.
3. In the Unit 1 packet, do the problems in 1.5. Problems that have an asterisk were on one of the assigned videos.
NOTE: Anytime this week, make a post in the Week 2 forum (available 1/29/19) by the due date about any problem from 1.5-1.7 in the packet.
4. Go back up to step 1 to view the videos for 1.6, watch/transcribe those, and then do the problems in that section.
5. Go back up to step 1 to view the videos for 1.7, watch/transcribe those, and then do the problems in that section.
The answers to the problems in the Unit 1 packet are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/solutions
Corrections to Packet 1 or Corrections to the Answers are at https://sites.google.com/site/packet1int/home/p1corrections
6. Open up Q2: 1.5-1.7 and complete the problems by the due date. Use a late pass if you don't finish all the problems in Q2 by due date.
1/29/19 New video and Week 1 Forum
Hi all,
I've posted this brand new YouTube video: Evaluating functions: f(x+h), f(x)-g(x), etc.
Also, although Monday before midnight was the due date to make a post or a reply for the Week 1 forum, I'm keeping it open until Tuesday before midnight for replies as some students posted in the wrong forum, or posted about something other than a problem from 1.1-1.4 of the Unit 1 packet. Since this is the first forum, I'm letting you post a reply to someone else's post if you haven't made the correct type of post in this forum yet.
The Week 2 forum is now open. Please discuss problems from 1.5-1.7 in the Packet. If you have other questions, or questions from the quiz, use the Questions forum. Also, post early in week so there is time for replies. I've spent about 5 hours today answering questions in the forum, but I don't usually have that much time to do that. I usually check several times a day, and answer promptly, but it's best if there is plenty of time to reply. Don't wait until the last minute, or even the last day, if possible!
I had a couple zoom meeting today and we went over several problems. If you need help, don't hesitate to reach out!
1/30/19 NOTE sent to Students not making a post in the first weekly forum:
Math 64 Forum Attendance Requirement
I'm writing you as you did not make a forum post for Week 1, which is one of the attendance requirements to remain enrolled in Math 64 online. Each week, you need to make a post or reply to a post about a problem in the Unit Packet (not a problem from the online quiz) in the graded Weekly Forum. This is part of your grade, and demonstrates attendance, which is required to remain enrolled. The due date for the first one, Week 1 Forum, was Monday, 1/28/19. It is now closed, but Week 2 is now open until next Monday. Make sure you make a post this week in the Week 2 forum. You'll see the directions you need to follow when you open the forum.
If you have any questions, let me know. I suggest you read some of the forum posts from the first week to get an idea what to do.
The other attendance requirement is to submit at least one problem in each quiz by the original due date (not a later date if you use a late pass). So making a Forum Post and submitting at least one quiz problem are the two attendance requirements each week.
Hope you are doing well, and look forward to your participation in the forum!
1/30/19 Late Pass, Quiz, Forum Info
I hope you are all working on Week 2 material now. It's hard to catch up if you fall behind, so keep up to date and stay ahead of the game. Make sure you make the Week 2 Forum Post well in advance of the due date so there is time for any replies if you have a question. Below is a reminder about Attendance requirements, Late Pass Info, etc. I also posted new videos at bottom.
ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS EACH WEEK TO AVOID BEING DROPPED: POST IN THE REQUIRED WEEKLY FORUM, AND SUBMIT AT LEAST SOME ANSWERS TO EACH ONLINE QUIZ (Q1, Q2, etc) BY THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE. Clicking a late pass and getting a later due date does not count as attendance. If you need time to finish an online quiz, use a Late Pass. Read all the info about Assignments, and Late Passes in this link. You may use more than one late pass on each quiz--each one extends the due date 48 hours from the current due date. Two late passes extends the due date 96 hours. Do NOT open a quiz in review mode if you still want to work on it. Opening in review mode prevents you from using a late pass.
Below are new videos posted that may help some of you that had trouble with Quiz 1. If needed, use a Late Pass to work on Quiz 1.
Click here for a new video posted for simplifying problems like f(x+h), g(x+h) - g(x), etc.

1/31/19 Late Start Math 64-32 (sent to some students)
If you are up-to-date, completed Q1, working on Week 2 material and feeling like the pace of our online Math 64 class is a good fit for you, that's awesome. If not, read the following for other options.
This is a reminder that the drop date to earn a refund and no record on your transcript for this class is Friday, 1/31/19. If you have fallen behind (low score on Q1 or haven't started on Week 2 material yet) and you think you could benefit from taking Math 64-32 instead, please note there are two late-start Math 64-32 classes beginning next week that are listed below. These meet 4 days a week for 2 hours a day, and include a review of Elementary Algebra topics as needed. So you have more time with the instructor to review/learn the material.
