I teach this class in MyOpenMath (MOM), a free course management system. Student must enroll in MOM by noon the first day of class. I DO NOT USE CANVAS. It is in MOM that you have access to announcements, instructions, schedule, packet info, discussion board forums, quizzes, tests, due dates, etc. You submit online work in MOM.
Read this syllabus, and follow INSTRUCTIONS below TO ENROLL IN MOM, GET STARTED, and not be dropped.
1. Enroll in our online course in MOM (see below) before noon, 1/23/19 by following the directions below.
If you have a MyOpenMath account, log in. If not, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. Enter the SAME LAST NAME listed for you on SURF, the SAME FIRST NAME listed for you on SURF. NOTE: YOU MAY BE DROPPED FROM BOTH MYOPENMATH and YOUR MIRACOSTA CLASS IF YOU ENTER A LAST NAME DIFFERENT FROM THE LAST NAME ON SURF. If you go by a different first name, please put that in parentheses next to your official SURF first name. So if your first name in SURF is listed as Jennifer and you go by Jen or Sky (or whatever), enter your first name this way: Jennifer (Jen) or Jennifer (Sky), etc.
Click Enroll in New Class and enter this Course ID: 43558 You must also enter an enrollment key, which I sent via email. IF YOU ENROLLED IN SURF AFTER 1/15/19, OR DID NOT RECEIVE AN EMAIL WITH THE ENROLLMENT KEY, EMAIL ME AT MCCMATHGAL@GMAIL.COM WITH YOUR NAME AND 4 DIGIT SECTION NUMBER.
2. After enrolling, enter the course, and complete the short, Intro to Class assignment no later than 1/25/19. You must complete it in order to open math assignments.
3. Read the Schedule and Instructions for this Class. Open the IMPT INFO folder. Click on Short Useful Tutorial and complete it. Click on How to Enter & Submit Answers and read it. Click on Late Pass Info and read it. Go back to the main page to begin working. Follow the schedule. Pay attention to directions and due dates. I DO NOT COLLECT OR GRADE WORK OR GIVE POINTS FOR DOING PACKET WORK, but do those problems to learn the material. Click Here for links for info about the 4 unit packets. Packets may be purchased in the bookstore or printed from my website. To start working, watch/transcribe the videos for 1.1 (video links are on the Unit 1 webpage and in Q1) to keep in your own video notebook. Then complete 1.1 in the packet. You'll do this for all sections assigned that week. Before the due date for the Week 1 Forum, make a post about a problem in the Unit Packet 1 assigned that week. Complete Q1 (in Unit 1 folder) by its due date. If you don't complete all problems by then, use a Late Pass. There is a 50% penalty for problems done after the due date but before the Test Deadline while using a late pass.
TO AVOID BEING DROPPED, MAKE THE REQUIRED FORUM POST EACH WEEK, AND SUBMIT AT LEAST SOME ANSWERS TO EACH ONLINE QUIZ (Q1, Q2, etc) BY THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE. If you need more time to finish an online quiz, use a Late Pass. Clicking a late pass does not count as attendance. Attendance is monitored by logging in to MyOpenMath at least a few times a week to read info, watch videos, make forum posts, work on online quizzes, etc. I begin teaching the class the first day of the semester and you must be actively participating in MyOpenMath to be considered attending class. Make sure your email in MyOpenMath is correct and check it often. I often also copy/paste emails sent to the class into the announcement page so check that as well to make sure you do not miss important info from an email.
Log in to MOM at least a few times a week to read announcements, forum posts, and to check messages. Read all emails from me in a timely manner. Keep them. I did not schedule an in-person orientation, but I'm happy to talk via phone, or meet with you in person! After reading the info in the syllabus and in MOM, please let me know if you have any questions.
Plan to spend at least 12 hours a week on this class. Map out your time and treat it like a job you cannot miss! Time is the best recipe for success. Half the students do not complete the class due to falling behind due to time-management issues that arise from having too much on their plate. I'd like to have ALL of you make a commitment right now to putting in your best effort, which means setting aside at least 12 hours a week for this class, preferably on a daily basis, spreading out the work, and completing all work by the due date.
This class is HYBRID (not fully online), as you are required to take proctored tests in person. Each student is required to schedule an appointments for each test, preferably at least 2 weeks before the date of the test...the earlier the better. More info is in Test Info in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests.

Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
Calculator: You will need a basic or scientific calculator for this class. Calculators may be used on proctored tests. Most problems should be done without a calculator. Only use when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what you may use in the Academic Proctoring Center on tests. On proctored tests, you may ONLY use a calculator provided by the APC. Use of cell phones as calculators is not allowed.
Attendance Policies: Attendance is monitored by your verified active participation in class each week in the following ways. You may be dropped WITHOUT NOTICE if you do not follow the requirements below. Contact me any time you are unable to fulfill these policies.
1. Log in to our MOM class at least every few days to read announcements, make the required weekly forum post by the deadline, open and submit answers in the online work (unless you are ahead). Also, read forum posts and messages. You must submit posts in the requireded weekly forums and also submit some answers to each online quiz by the due date(s) to be considered attending class. Logging in without submitting answers, using a late pass, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward this requirement. You should spend at least 12 hours a week on this class, and at least 4 hours should be actively working in MOM--unless you complete online work before the due date.
2) Show up and take tests during your scheduled appointment time. Be on time (arriving early is a good idea) with your valid photo I.D. If you do not take a proctored test by its deadline, you may be dropped unless I am notified immediately.
TESTS: There are three unit tests and a comprehensive final that you must take proctored in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC) on campus, or at an approved proctoring site out of the county. Unit 1 covers Packet 1 and Q1-3, Unit 2 covers Packet 2, and Q4-7, Unit 3 covers Packet 3 and Q8-10, and the final is cumulative over Q1-13 which emphasis on Q11-13. These are tests you take in person with a proctor, and the tests are online. The dates you may take each test, as well as all info regarding appointments is in MOM. Click here if you will be out of the county during test window dates.
Schedule and Assignments: There are four packets. See schedule. There are required Weekly Forum Post Assignments, and online Quizzes. If you transcribe videos and do the packet problems first, you should be ready to do the online quiz assignment. If you need more time to complete an online assignment, redeem a late pass within the late pass period. The quizzes (Q1, Q2, etc.) are like quizzes in that you must answer correctly to earn points, but they are not timed, and you may try similar problems to earn credit if you answer incorrectly.
Studying: Doing the packets and quizzes is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule several hours a week for working on this class. I encourage you to frequently go back and review the packets, videos and quiz problems to make sure you remember the concepts and can still work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 1000 points total. No extra credit. To avoid being dropped, you need to actively participate on a weekly basis in all elements listed below to demonstrate attendance.
Graded Weekly Forum Posts: 50 pt
Online Quizzes: 150 pt
Unit Test 1,2,3: 600 pt
Cumulative Final mainly over Unit 4: 200 pt
Grades are calculated using the following scale out of 1000 points. The minimum points you need to earn that grade is shown, and you must also earn a *minimum of 50% on the final to pass with a C or better. You must do well on and tests (especially the final exam) to pass the class. Your grade is based mainly on proctored tests where you demonstrate your understanding through working problems correctly in a testing environment.
A: At least 850 points (85%) or at least 90% on final exam
B: At least 750 points (75%) or at least 80% on final exam
C: At least 600 points (60%) or at least 65% on final exam
D: At least 500 points
There are no make-up tests. If you miss a test, you earn a zero on it. If you miss a test due to an emergency (or any reason) or do better on the final exam than your lowest test score, I replace the lowest test score with your grade on the final exam. The final exam is required and may not be replaced. If your final exam score is lower than your test scores, nothing will be replaced. Contact me immediately if you miss a test. Nothing replaces the final exam grade, and it is required to pass the class.
Grades are calculated using the following scale with the extra stipulation that you must also earn at least 50% on the final exam to pass the class with a C or better.
