1/18/18 and 1/21/18
Welcome to Math 64!
Below is the syllabus link which includes info to enroll in the free online system, MyOpenMath. I'm providing this now for anyone who wants to begin working on the class before Monday, 1/22/18. https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/home/syllabi/18int
To remain enrolled in this class at MiraCosta, you MUST enroll in MyOpenMath and do the Intro to Class Assignment by 1/22/18. The course ID to enroll is 31123 and your enrollment key is your 4-digit section number. Details for enrolling are in the syllabus.
If you reply to this email or send an email to me during the semester, please include your first and last name.
I'm looking forward to a great semester!
1/23/18
Hope your first two days of class have gone well. I want to remind you that your first online math quiz is due Fri, 1/26/18, before midnight. You are required to answer at least SOME problems in this quiz by the due date. If you can't finish all of the problems by then, click on the link for a Late Pass and you will have a later due date. To understand how late passes work, please read the info at the following link. https://sites.google.com/site/harlandclass/home/current/latepass
I hope all of you have read Instructions for this Class and read it thoroughly. The steps are to watch videos, do problems in the packet, and then do the quiz.
If you have any questions about the class, please use the appropriate forum. If you have a question while doing a quiz problem, please click the link Post to the Forum, and write your question, letting me know what you've tried so far.
I am here to help, and want you to be successful. I hope you're all putting in at least 2-3 hours a day to transcribing the videos, studying, doing the problems in the packets, and/or doing the quiz problems. Click the Online Work folder to access the Schedule for the semester, the links to the packet info (including the videos that accompany it, the PDF, the answers and corrections) and the quizzes.
Below is info from the MLC about a Review Session they are holding this Friday.
Have fun!!! Algebra is Awesome!
The Math Learning Center (MLC) is hosting a FREE preparatory session for those enrolled in Math 64 at the Oceanside campus in room 3509 from 9 am - noon on Jan. 26th.
All students are welcome to attend. There is no need to register.
Topics discussed will include the following:

· Rational Equations
1/25/18
Most of you are doing great in the class. I wanted to remind you of some details.
1. Everyone must complete the Intro to Class assignment in order to access and complete Q1, etc., in the yellow ONLINE WORK folder. Some of you only completed question 1, which was to input some information about yourself. There are 13 more questions. You don't have to get all of them correct, but most need to be answered correctly. When you open the assignment, click the questions on the left. Most take a few seconds to complete. You'll need to use a late pass to open that assignment and have your answers count. This assignment is not worth points toward your grade, but you need to do it to stay in the class.
2. The steps for this class are to watch and transcribe in your own writing (a spiral notebook makes it easy to keep organized) the videos for each section before doing the problems in the section of packet. Do this for all sections assigned for each quiz. Then do the online quiz problems. The videos are listed in the link to each quiz in the ONLINE WORK folder. The link to the PDF is also included. You may print the PDF of the packet, view it online, or purchase in the bookstore. It's very important to watch the videos and do the packet problems before attempting the quiz. If not, it's like walking into class to take a test without going to class to learn the material or doing any homework problems. The link to all the packets, with the PDF, videos, answers and corrections is at https://sites.google.com/site/packetsymg/
3. You must have completed problems in each quiz by its original due date. If you need more time, use a late pass. I gave you more late passes than you need or could use, so don't worry about using one if you need it. However, if you are always using one, that means you are not keeping up. You want to be ahead, not behind.
4. Q1 over sections 1.1-1.4 of the packet is due Friday, 1/26. You should have watched/transcribed the videos already (2-4 hours), completed those sections in the packet (2-4 hours), and have started on the quiz by now. Remember: Set aside 12 hours a week for this class, spread out over the week. It's easy to fall behind, and hard to catch up once you do that.
5. You may be dropped if you do not work on each quiz by its original due date as that's how I count attendance in this class. If you use a late pass but do not answer any questions, I don't count that as attendance. Make sure you do some problems in Q1 by 1/26 to remain enrolled.
6. Every time you email me, write Math 64 AND your first AND last name AND phone number AND times I may reach you by phone. I cannot recognize students by email address. If you message me in MyOpenMath, I know what class you are in and your name, but including your phone number and times I can reach you is helpful.
7. Feel free to meet me on campus for office hours at 1 pm every T/Th in 3622 at the Oceanside campus.
8. For more help, note there is free on-campus and online tutoring. See http://www.miracosta.edu/studentservices/tutoring/forstudents.html for more info.
9. You may also go to the Math Learning Center in the library for more help. See http://www.miracosta.edu/instruction/mathematics/mlc/index.html for more info.
10. If you have a question on a problem in the packet, or on an example on a video, or on a problem on an online quiz, post your question to the forum. Be very clear about what the problem is, what you've tried, etc. Show your steps. Other students may help before I see the problem.
11. Use messages for more personal items.
12. KEEP UP AND HAVE FUN! ALGEBRA IS AWESOME!
1/29/18 IMPORTANT: Math 64 Info 1/29/18
Welcome to the second week of Math 64!
Most of you are keeping up and have completed Q1. Keep up the great work! Today, you should start working to complete Q2 by Friday by watching the videos and doing the sections in the packet. Open Q2 and you can click on the videos from the directions. Q2 is due this Friday. Pay close attention to the due dates, and open and submit problems in each quiz by the due date.
IMPORTANT ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENT TO REMAIN ENROLLED (set aside 12 hours a week for this class): If you have not already submitted answers in Q1, you are required to log in to MyOpenMath, open Mod 1, click on late pass if you didn't do that already, click on Q1, and submit answers by TONIGHT, 1/29/18, to avoid being dropped. Ideally, you should have finished Q1 since it was due Friday. Some students mistakenly think that using a late pass without submitting any answers is sufficient. It's not. You may be dropped if you use a late pass but do not submit answers. The late pass gives you more time to complete the problems in assessments, but it is not a substitute for starting an assessment.
Please read Assignment and Late Pass Info so you fully understand how it works. Using a late pass simply allows you to have more time to work on problems in any assessment if you want to earn more points. You have enough late passes to use one on every assignment. But if you always use a late pass, that might indicate you aren't able to keep up which means it may be difficult to be ready for the test. Also, you can practice problems in the assessments as much as you'd like either in review mode, or after you earned credit on a problem.
If you would like me to call you to clarify anything, please send your number and times you may be reached. You may also meet me during office hours any T/Th from 1-1:50 pm in room 3622. And don't forget you may seek help in the Math Learning Center in the library, or make tutoring appointments. Click links below for more info.
