I teach this class in MyOpenMath (MOM), a free course management system. Student must enroll in MOM by noon the first day of class. I DO NOT USE BLACKBOARD or CANVAS. It is in MOM that you have access to announcements, instructions, schedule, packet info, quizzes, tests, due dates, etc. You submit online work in MOM. I provide some practice tests, Beginning Algebra Review, Packet Info (written work you do but do not submit), test info/dates/policies, forums, etc. Like a class on campus, come to class by logging in to MyOpenMath at least a few times a week to read info, work on online quizzes, etc. I begin teaching the class the first day of the semester and you must be active in MyOpenMath to be considered attending class. Make sure your email in MyOpenMath is correct and check it often. I often copy/paste emails into the announcement page so check that in case you miss an email.
Enroll in MOM (see directions below) and submit answers to the Intro to Class online assignment by 1/22/18, or you may be dropped. Submit answers to all assignments by the original due date for each.
FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS BELOW TO REMAIN ENROLLED.
1. Enroll in MOM (see below) using Course ID by noon, 1/22/18. See directions below for enrolling. Emailing me is not evidence of participating in class.
2. Open and read all info in the links and folders, and follow directions and due dates.
3. Complete the Intro to Class online assignment by 1/22/18, or you may be dropped. It is a quick, simple intro to the class. You must complete it in order to open any math assignments. Also, open the IMPT INFO folder to do the Short Useful Tutorial, read the link How to Enter & Submit Answers, read how Late Passes work.
4. Start following the Schedule for the class. Transcribe videos for 1.1-1.4, do problems in Unit Packet for 1.1-1.4, and then open and complete the online assignment called Q1 no later than Friday, 1/26/18.
FOLLOW THESE DEADLINES TO STAY ENROLLED--Enroll in MyOpenMath and complete Intro to Class by 1/22, and Q1 by 1/26.
STUDENTS MUST SUBMIT ANSWERS TO EACH ONLINE ASSIGNMENT (Q1, Q2, etc) BY THE ORIGINAL DUE DATE, OR MAY BE DROPPED. A minimum of a few answers for each assignment must be done on time. If you need more time to finish it, THEN use a late pass. Clicking a late pass does not count as attendance. Read Late Pass Info.
1. If you have a MyOpenMath account, log in. If not, go to www.myopenmath.com and create an account. Enter the SAME LAST NAME listed for you on SURF, the SAME FIRST NAME listed for you on SURF. If you go by a different name, please put that in parentheses next to your official SURF first name. So if your first name in SURF is listed as Jennifer and you go by Jen or JR or Sky (or whatever), enter your first name this way: Jennifer (Jen) or Jennifer (JR) or Jennifer (Sky), etc.

Since this is an online class, you are responsible for reading and understanding all information in this syllabus. Log in to MOM at least a few times a week to read announcements, forum posts, and to check messages. Read all emails from me in a timely manner. Keep them. I did not schedule an in-person orientation, but I'm happy to talk via phone, or meet with you in person! After reading the info in the syllabus and in the online materials, please let me know if you have any questions.
Plan to spend at least 12 hours a week on this class. Map out your time and treat it like a job you cannot miss! Time is the best recipe for success. Half the students do not complete the class due to falling behind due to time-management issues that arise from having too much on their plate. I'd like to have ALL of you make a commitment right now to putting in your best effort, which means setting aside at least 12 hours a week for this class, preferably on a daily basis, spreading out the work, and completing all work by the due date.
This class is HYBRID (not fully online), as you are required to take proctored tests in person. Each student is required to schedule an appointments for each test, preferably at least 2 weeks before the date of the test...the earlier the better. More info is in Test Info in MOM. Click here for options if you will be out of the county during the window to take tests.

Course Description Intermediate Algebra: This algebra course covers radicals, exponents, concepts of relations and functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, linear and quadratic functions, and the solutions of equations from these topics.
Student Learning Outcome: For a given set of problems the student will demonstrate quantitative reasoning by developing a problem-solving strategy, performing appropriate analysis and computation, and critically assessing the meaning of the conclusion or outcome.
Calculator: You will need a basic or scientific calculator for this class. Calculators may be used on proctored tests. Most problems should be done without a calculator. Only use when necessary. I recommend TI-30-XS (for about $20) since it is what you may use in the Academic Proctoring Center on tests. On proctored tests, you may ONLY use a calculator provided by the APC. Use of cell phones as calculators is not allowed.
Attendance Policies: Attendance is monitored by your verified participation in class each week in the following ways. You may be dropped WITHOUT NOTICE if you do not follow the requirements below. Contact me any time you are unable to fulfill these policies.
1. Log in to our MOM class at least every few days to read announcements, open and submit answers in the online work (unless you are ahead) and read forum posts or messages. You must submit some answers to each online assignment by the due date(s) for each one to be considered attending class. Logging in without submitting answers, using a late pass, clicking other links or watching videos does NOT count toward this requirement. You should spend at least 4 hours each week actively working in MOM unless you complete online work before the due date.
2) Show up and take tests during your scheduled appointment time. Be on time with your valid photo I.D. If you do not take a proctored test by its deadline, you may be dropped unless I am notified immediately.
TESTS: There are three unit tests and a comprehensive final that you must take proctored in the Academic Proctoring Center (APC) on campus, or at an approved proctoring site out of the county. Unit 1 covers Packet 1 and Q1-3, Unit 2 covers Packet 2, and Q4-7, Unit 3 covers Packet 3 and Q8-10, and the final is cumulative over Q1-13 which emphasis on Q11-13. These are tests you take in person with a proctor, and the tests are online. The dates you may take each test, as well as all info regarding appointments is in MOM. Click here if you will be out of the county during test window dates.
Schedule and Assignments: There are four packets. See schedule. There are about 13 regular online assignments, and each is worth the same amount toward your online Quiz grade. If you transcribe videos and do the packet problems first, you should be ready to do the online quiz assignment. If you need more time to complete an online assignment, redeem a late pass within the late pass period. The quizzes (Q1, Q2, etc.) are like quizzes in that you must answer correctly to earn points, but they are not timed, and you may try similar problems to earn credit if you answer incorrectly.
Studying: Doing the packets and quizzes is not the same thing as studying. Most students need to review a concept or a procedure many times before it becomes familiar and sticks. Schedule several hours a week for working on this class. I encourage you to frequently go back and review older videos and quiz problems to make sure you remember the concepts and can work through the problems correctly.
Grading: A point earned in one category is not worth the same as a point earned in another category. 500 points total. No extra credit.
Online Quizzes: 100 pt (overall percent earned on online quizzes)
Unit Test 1,2,3: 300 pt (100 points each, percent earned on each test)
Cumulative Final mainly over Unit 4: 100 pt (percent earned on final exam)
Grades are calculated using the following scale. The minimum points you need to earn that grade is shown. You must do well on and tests (especially the final exam) to pass the class. Your grade is based mainly on proctored tests where you demonstrate your understanding through working problems correctly in a testing environment.
A: *450 B: *400 C: *350 D: 250
There are no make-up tests. If you miss a test, you earn a zero on it. If you miss a test due to an emergency (or any reason) or do better on the final exam than your lowest test score, I replace the lowest test score with your grade on the final exam. The final exam is required and may not be replaced. If your final exam score is lower than your test scores, nothing will be replaced. Contact me immediately if you miss a test. Nothing replaces the final exam grade, and it is required to pass the class.
Grades are calculated using the following scale with the extra stipulation that you must also earn at least 50% on the final exam to pass the class with a C or better.
To figure out your grade in the class, do the following. Use these variables to represent total percent earned on each component:
Q: Quizzes overall percent; T1: Test 1 percent; T2: Test 2 percent; T3: Test 3 percent; F: Final Exam Percent
Add Q + T1 + T2 + T3 + F + F and then subtract your lowest percent from T1, T2, T3, F.
Minimum points to earn a particular grade: A: 450 B: 400 C: 350 D: 300
Example 1: Someone has these scores: Q: 90; T1: 84; T2: 50; T3: 76; F: 70
Since 50 is the lowest test score, subtract 50 from 90+84+50+76+70+70: 390 (That's a C.)
Example 2: Someone has these scores: Q: 90; T1: 84; T2: 80; T3: 76; F: 70
Since 70 is the lowest test score, subtract 70 from 90+84+80+76+70+70: 400 (That's a B.)
