The Mitannian Period

By the time of the Mitannian empire, the territory of the city is divided in two functionally distinct areas: the Lower Town and the Residential Terrace.

The Mitannian settlement is dated through the pottery which consists of younger Khabur ware and Nuzi ware, and through the presence of Mitannian seals and sealings, and text HT 3 in Mitanni-Akkadian ductus, found in the debris of R109 (41/37–H3-H4) in the Central Palace.

The Lower Town

The Lower Town spans an area of 245 ha. It is separated from the surrounding area by a wall and a trench, both of which were visible in the area until the early 1990s. In the following years, both wall and trench were levelled in the course of a land clearance project and now have completely disappeared except for a small area in squares -16 – -30/+6 – +10, in which traces of the wall are still visible. The dimensions of the mud bricks and the pottery make a dating in the Mitannian period plausible. As a result of the levelling, no entrances or pathways can be found.
