Geophysical Survey

The geophysical survey of 2010 inspected with a caesium magnetometer about 41'280 m2 within eight days.

The geophysical survey was carried out by D. Werthmüller from Terra Vermessung AG, supported by Mrs. J. Letnanksy and S. Rutishauser (University of Bern). The campaign was funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation. The results of the four areas are as follows:

  • Area A (2620 m2): The area of the central palace showed many and heavy disturbances. As the excavation made clear, they are mainly caused by the many ancient disturbances as rubbish pits or pits, but also by the levelling work of the Syrian military and the resulting clearance work.

  • Area B (2040 m2): The area of the Southwest Palace (including the old cemetery) showed several disturbances.

  • Area C (36360 m2): Smaller building structures can be seen. They presumably originate from the former French garrison period. Very clear are the remains of the retaining wall of the residence terrace, about 20 m wide and over 200 m long, running around the corner.

  • Area D: Further remains of the retaining wall.
